NSW All Age Country Championships The Championships this year was held in Tamworth in late November 2010. After a narrow loss to Illawarra in the first game Western Zone finished with two good wins to finish fifth. The NSW Country Team was selected after the carnival and congratulations to Tim Cox on his selection. The Country Team finished third in the Australian Championships at Bunbury WA.

Country Colts Championships The Carnival was held in Dubbo from 21st to 23rd January 2011. Western Zone played well and finished third with Newcastle defeating Central Coast in the final. Congratulations to Josh Toole and Jackson Coote on their selection to the Country Colts Team.

SCG Country Cup The final 8 teams competed on the Central Coast on the 28 and 29 December 2011. Western Zone winners Orange were defeated by Tamworth in the first round in very wet conditions. In the final played at the Cricket Ground on 16 January 2011 Tamworth DCA defeated Newcastle City and Eastern Districts.

Country Plate The final four teams Goulburn, Dungog, Blue Mountains and Temora competed in Orange on the 28 and 29 December. In the final played at Wade Park Orange, Goulburn defeated Blue Mountains.

Bradman Cup The Under 16 carnival was played at Wollongong in early January 2011. Western Zone’s only victory was against eventual winners Newcastle in a rain shortened match. In the final Newcastle defeated Central Coast. In the Under 16 State Challenge Newcastle defeated Bankstown in a match held at the on 13 February. Kookaburra Cup The Under 14 carnival was held in Southern Highlands from the 17 to 20 January 2011. Western Zone had a tremendous carnival winning all three games in their pool and were defeated in the final at Bradman Oval by Central North 3 for 337 to 9 for 245. In the Under 14 State Challenge played at the Sydney Cricket Ground as a Twenty20 fixture Sydney South East defeated Central North Zone.

Women’s Cricket The Under 19 and Under 15 carnivals were held in Newcastle on the long weekend in October 2010. Western Under 19 lost to North Coast in the final and Western Under 15 were defeated by Central Coast in the final. Many thanks to Marie Cornish and Carolyn Sheehan for their continued enthusiasm and guidance of female cricket in Western Zone

Regional Manager In August 2010 long serving Western Regional Manager, Max Shepherd announced his retirement from his position. Max was a great servant of NSW Cricket and Ambassador for Western Zone Cricket in his 19 years based in Dubbo. Max and his wife Penny made many great friends and I am sure all Western Zone Cricket followers wish them the very best in their new life based in Albury, Max’s home town.

Congratulations to Matthew Tabbernor on his appointment as Western Zone Cricket manager. With the position changing to a predominately administration role Matthew appears to be settling in well and I believe will continue to be of great value to Western Zone Cricket.

Administrator Colin Wood continues to do a magnificent job in control of the finances and programs for Western Zone cricket.

My appreciation to the many people who have made a great contribution to the efficient organisation of Western Zone cricket:

Neil Doherty – Deputy Chairman Matt Crawley – Chairman of Selectors Stephen Poole – Umpires Co-ordinator, Mitchell Selector Tim Cox – Macquarie Valley Selector Marie Cornish – Women’s co-ordinator Garth Dean – Mitchell Coaching Director Tony Wells – Mitchell Coaching Director Jordan Moran – Macquarie Valley Coaching Director Rod Kershaw – Lachlan Coaching Director Carl Sharpe – Mitchell Council Secretary Warren Saunders - Macquarie Valley Council Secretary Greg Morrissey – Lachlan Council Secretary All Association executives across the Zone

Country Committee of Management It has been my pleasure to again represent Western Zone on the Country Committee. As Orange DCA is celebrating their 100 year anniversary this year the Country Committee has organised the Country AGM and Dinner to be held in Orange on the 20th August 2011. Hopefully as many Cricket Representatives will be able to attend and help celebrate Orange’s Cricket Centenary.

NSW Cricket The Sydney Test Match against England provided some improved financial benefits and this has allowed some grants to be approved. The big change for the 2011-2012 season will be the Twenty20 Big Bash League competition. It will be made up of eight teams with NSW having two teams, the based at SCG and the Sydney Thunder based at Sydney Olympic Park. Contracted players to these franchises will be announced in the next few months.

WZ Administrator - Colin Wood

I am pleased to present the twenty seventh Annual Report of the Western Zone Cricket Committee Inc. I thank everyone who has contributed to the compilation of this report and recommend it as the definitive record of our Zone in 2010/11.

Over the last two seasons we have seen great change in the people involved in the administration and management of cricket in our Zone.

Most notably Western Region Cricket Manager Max Shepherd and his wife Penny said goodbye in August 2010, after serving cricket and cricketers in Western NSW for 19 years. Matthew Tabbernor replaced Max and has settled into the role very well. A complete turnover and a partial re distribution of our Regional Directors of Coaching has also occurred, with new RD of C’s in Lachlan (Rod Kershaw 2009/10), Macquarie Valley (Jordan Moran 2010/11) and Mitchell (Garth Dean 2009/10 and Tony Wells 2010/11), which has invigorated our coaching ranks. They continue to do a wonderful job.

Matthew Crawley replaced Stephen Poole as our senior Chairman of Selectors. Steven had been our senior Chairman of Selectors for the previous five seasons and remained as the Mitchell representative on the panel. Tim Cox was also a new face of this panel and all three combined very well under the pressure of selecting our Open and Colts teams.

My thanks to Cowra (Southern Under 17), Dubbo (CCNSW Colts) and Orange (Country Plate) Cricket Associations, who all successfully staged Carnivals on behalf of CCNSW last season. Doug Wright (Cowra), Warren Saunders (Dubbo) and Pete Jarick (Orange) all made valuable contributions to the success of these Carnival.

Greg Morrissey, Warren Saunders and Carl Sharpe are all household names in Western Zone. Their role as Secretary to their own Council is paramount to the successful operation of our Zone and I can’t thank them enough for their help and support during the season.

Our Chairman and CCNSW Committee of Management member Dennis Cox continues to provide rousing leadership. Never afraid to get his hands dirty, his continued enthusiasm for the game remains undiminished. I thank him for his support and guidance in 2010/11.

Marie Cornish and her administration of female cricket in Western Zone is well know across the state. With Carolyn Sheehan, the contribution she makes in organising our female cricket program is extraordinary.

To all our Managers and Coaches of our male and female Western Zone teams, a big THANK YOU.

Ian Hogg (CCNSW Chairman), John Sullivan (CCNSW Executive Office) and Bruce Whitehouse (CCNSW Coordinator) continue to show confidence in our Zone, which is very much appreciated.

Our strong financial position is made possible by two things 1. The continued support of CNSW Chief Executive David Gilbert and the Board of Directors and 2. The very careful way in which our expenditure is monitored. I sincerely hope both continue into the future.

Volunteer of the Year Greg Morrissey, Male Cricketer of the Year Tim Cox, Female Cricketer of the Year Lisa Griffith and Youth Cricketer of the Year Andrew Page, thank you and congratulations on your contribution to Cricket in Western Zone

Special congratulations to Bruce Cousins from Orange who will be awarded the Country Cricket NSW Groundsman of the Year at the CCNSW Annual Dinner, which most appropriately will be held in Orange.

NSW Western Region Cricket Manager – Matthew Tabbernor

The following report is presented to members of Western Zone, affiliated Councils, Associations, Clubs and volunteers. It provides a summary of cricket projects, strategies and activities implemented by Cricket NSW and subsequent outcomes during the 2010/11 season.

Western NSW Territory

Regional Cricket Managers perform a range of duties as part of the Country Cricket Department. The Western NSW Region encompassed four cricket Councils, twenty two Senior and twenty four Junior Associations for the 2010/11 season, from the Blue Mountains to Broken Hill, with a total of 8497 registered players. Following is an outline of activities undertaken during the 2010/11 season and these projects fall under the key pillars of Game Development and State Cricket.

Recruitment, Retention and Education of junior players and volunteers remain the key elements of Game Development projects.

Recruitment – School Visits program Recruitment strategies in the Western NSW area centered on targeted school visits, media advertising, In2Cricket and MyCricket website and pre-printed posters and flyers providing club registration and contact information. Associations were required to provide sign on information and contacts for poster and flier printing prior to school visits in their area. Over 7000 fliers and registration forms were distributed to students. The key strategy in delivering a school visit program is the appointment of Cricket Promotion Officers (CPO’s). The identification and training of CPO’s is a major undertaking and this season the following officers were contracted to deliver school programs through the key August – October recruitment period:-

Greg Morrissey – Parkes, Peak Hill, Forbes, Condobolin, Craig McIllhatton – Cowra, Grenfell, Matthew Tabbernor – Bathurst, Gulgong, Warren, Cobar, Coonamble, West Wyalong, Wallerawang, Cowra Trevor Thomas – West Wyalong, Tottenham Steve Chippendale – Gulgong, Warren, Nyngan,

Gala cricket days (mixed skills and games) were provided for small school clusters and these were held at Blayney (6 schools) and at Mudgee (4 schools).

The Extended school program, where a visit is made each week to a school over a five week period was undertaken at Young North PS, Megalong PS, Monteagle PS, St Johns PS Dubbo and Macquarie Anglican Grammar school Dubbo with 367 students participating. I would like to thank Trevor Thomas and Craig McIllhatton for their help in delivering this program.

In Summary: 19 centre’s visited 55 schools attended 221 teachers involved 4999 students participated

Recruitment – Milo in2 Cricket Milo in2 Cricket is a “pre competition" program designed to introduce 5 – 8 year old boys and girls into the game. The aims of the program are:

 To provide a non-competitive environment where youngsters can develop their cricket skills and have fun.  To link young cricketers to their local association/club  To develop more volunteers (parents) involvement in the game

Milo in2 is the first step in a child’s involvement in the game of cricket and provides a link with a junior association leading into underage competition.

Western associations who registered an in2Cricket centre for the first time were this year given priority for school visits to promote the program and also a strong emphasis was placed on recruitment for this program through existing centres.

This season resulted in thirty (30) centres registering across the region an increase of six (6) with a total of 913 boys and girls participating in the program. Despite the rise of six centres, participants dropped by 77 children or 7.78%

Parkes In2Cricket Centre was selected to participate on the SCG during the lunch break of test in January 2011.

5 Year Comparison of Participants and Centre Numbers in Western Region

Recruitment/Participation – Female Cricket Western continued the strong tradition in female cricket with school participation still the key growth area. More females are taking the opportunity to play in the Super 8’s days which encourages them to stay in the game and leading into the secondary school competitions.

2010/2011 saw the introduction of the Carolyn “Russian” Sheehan Trophy for girls to participate in a pairs cricket format. Funding for this program was provided from the Cricket Australia Women’s High Performance Grant. The aim of this competition is to encourage participation and enjoyment of the game and as a tool to encourage new girls of any age to play the game of cricket. Four teams (Macquarie, Mitchell, Wellington and Lachlan) participated this season and hopefully the competition will grow in the future. Mitchell Cricket Council defeated Lachlan Cricket Council to claim the inaugural shield.

Recruitment/Participation – Indigenous Cricket September 2010 saw the introduction of a three day camp in Walgett in conjunction with Walgett Shire Council. James Henry and I spent the time introducing the children to various cricket games and skills and was well supported by the local police and Council. Around 25 children attended the three day camp. In December, a coaching clinic was held in Cowra with the local schools and PCYC for indigenous cricket day. Due to inclement weather (which saw flooding hit the most of Western NSW), sixty children were crammed into the local PCYC. This did not dampen the enthusiasm as Trevor Thomas, Craig McIllhatton and I putting the children through numerous activities. The day rounded off with a barbeque lunch.

The coaching clinic was also held in conjunction with the Cowra Police v Koori T20 match. This was a chance for the local community to come together on a cricket field to help foster relations between the two groups. It was great to see many people enjoying the day and congratulations must go to Anthony McLean and his workers for his efforts in making these events a success.

An idea of an Orange v Dubbo Indigenous T20 match did not eventuate this season and is a goal for next season to get it going. Hopefully in the future this could turn into a regional event.

Recruitment – Summary and Moving Forward The challenge for the Regional Cricket Manager is now to maintain the existing programs to ensure that participation numbers remain and possibly increase and to meet the expectations of the local volunteers. In 2011/2012 I will be aiming to meet with all In2Cricket coordinators to work out strategies on how I can help support them. With these coordinators, centres do not run and junior cricket will suffer in the long term. School visits were down this season due to an August changeover of RCM right in the middle of the school visits.

The key will be to maintain the CPO’s network to provide school visits and the challenge of covering all associations across the broad area of Western NSW. I am in the process of recruiting new CPOs for the area in order to maximize school visits to help boost numbers within the region.

Ensuring that all associations have an in2 Cricket Centre will to be a priority and to continue the recruitment strategies that were implemented this season. It is good to see that most Associations now have an In2Cricket Centre. I will be working with Blayney, Cobar, Peak Hill, Gulgong, Walgett, Millthorpe and other outlaying areas to establish a centre in their towns to help establish cricket into their communities.

An emphasis will be in recruiting girls to play in weekend competitions as well as the “Russian” Shield. I will be working towards holding girls only clinics in various towns to help boost numbers for local competitions and for various WZ competitions and squads.

The Walgett and Cowra clinic shows that if we give cricket to indigenous people they will jump at the chance to participate in the sport. It is up to myself and local communities to work together in order for this to prosper into the future. To make this happen we need to identify Indigenous leaders in the community and train them to give them the skills and confidence to share the game with the younger generation. Funding is being sort to help pay for Level 1 courses to be completed.

Retention

Retention of players continues to be a key pillar of the overall Game Development strategy.

Measuring the level of retention in junior cricket is a major challenge and the more effectively we can measure it will enable us to implement strategies to maintain player numbers.

The My Cricket website and a generic junior registration form will allow Cricket NSW to effectively gather more information about a player.

Retention/Recruitment - Super 8’s Primary schools Events Super 8 is an eight aside modified version of cricket is being enjoyed by thousands of students throughout the state. The format allows for teams to play a number of games over a carnival day with maximum involvement regardless of playing ability. Super 8’s is also a good tool for recruitment of new players particularly females.

Super 8’s continued to be a popular primary school cricket program in the Western Region. A total of five (5) carnivals were conducted with a new event held at Young due to the efforts of Craig McIllhatton and the Young Association. A total of 69 boys and 55 girl’s teams nominated to participate during 2010/11 season.

Events were run at, Cowra, Dubbo, Young, Mudgee, and Parkes. Macquarie Anglican Grammar School and Cudgegong Valley Public School were given the opportunity to play an extra game at the SCG during the lunch break of the Ashes Test in January.

Cricket NSW provided trophies for each of the winning teams with certificates for the players and students from the various local secondary schools are acknowledged for assisting with umpiring and scoring duties. I will be looking at making this bigger and better next season with an introduction of a region wide finals series and extra carnivals to be held in the area. I would like to see carnivals held in Orange, Lithgow, Bathurst, Walgett and Forbes.

Retention – Western Interschool Competitions The conducting of these school competitions continues to be an important duty for the Regional Cricket Manager in providing the opportunity for secondary students to enjoy competition between local schools on a round robin format (4 matches each).

Competitions conducted and results are as follow:  ING Boys Shield – twelve schools participated with St Johns Dubbo defeating Mudgee High School in the final.  Lisa Keightley Girls Shield – ten schools participated. This competition was unable to be finished for 2010/11 due to floods that hit the Western area.  Lachlan boys Shield – ten schools participated with again the competition not finishing due to change over of RCM.  Far West Secondary Schools Shield – isolated schools competition played as a 30/30 format with Nyngan High School defeating Cobar High School  Dunedoo and District Central Schools – 20/20 format for girls and boys teams played over the one day. Dunedoo Central School defeated Coolah Central School in both games.

The Regional Cricket Manager attended and assisted school selection trails for the following teams: - Western CHS boys, Forbes/Wilcannia Diocese Girls and Boys, Bathurst Diocese Girls and Boys, Western Region PSSA Boys.

School Ambassador Program The MILO in2CRICKET School Ambassador program aims to identify and recognize a teacher in each Australian school who is committed to ensuring their students have every opportunity to get involved with cricket. The RCM works with these Ambassadors in setting up school based competitions, Super 8s day and conducting school visits.

At the end of the 2009/2010 season, Western Region had thirty seven 37 ambassadors registered. At the end of the 2010/2011 season 70 school teachers have been registered for the program, up from 37 last season.

The challenge here is to continue identifying Ambassadors for each school and retaining them season to season. These Ambassadors are also useful in local Associations for any marketing or training needs.

Retention – Western Representation State School Carnivals and Knockouts Two hundred and thirty two (232) Western Region schools participated in various state wide school cricket competitions during 2010/2011. In the major competitions:  Twenty Nine (29) Western Secondary schools participated in the boys State Combined High Schools Knockout (Alan Davidson Shield).  Sixteen (16) Western Secondary Schools participated in the girls State Combined High Schools Knockout (Marie Cornish Shield).  Forty Nine (49) Western Primary Schools nominated in the Brian Taber Shield PSSA Boy’s Knockout.  Twenty One (21) Western Primary Schools nominated in the Lords Taverner’s State girl’s PSSA Knockout. Census Evaluation 2010/2011 Seniors – Senior players and teams have remained steady for the past 3 seasons. However, this is partially due to the amount of T20 competitions being played in various towns. In 2010/2011 T20 accounted for 41 teams and 564 players in the census. This shows this is the growth area for senior cricket and should be encouraged to be played in conjunction with existing cricket competitions.

Senior numbers may see an impact of reduced number of players if junior numbers continue to decline as they did this season. Hopefully new strategies that will be implemented (outlined below) will help alleviate this potential problem.

Juniors – The figures this year is quite alarming and work needs to begin straightaway to arrest this decline and for numbers to pick up again. Between 2009/2010 and the 2010/2011 seasons, combined Western Associations have seen 78 junior teams and 1012 children not playing cricket. This is a decrease of 21% in player numbers. The decrease of junior players also leaves the problem of reduced volunteers in the game.

I held meetings with the Associations that saw the biggest drop (Dubbo, Mudgee, Orange and Lithgow) to gather information on local and area problems that may contribute to the decline of problems. A lot of good ideas were raised and hopefully this will see an increase of players next season. Other initiatives that will be implemented include increased school and town visits, coaching clinics in holidays, new region wide T20 competition and a region wide Super 8s carnival.

Coach Education Cricket NSW is strongly committed to improve the standard of our coaches. Cricket Australia’s online Introduction to Coaching program has created a lot of interest and registrations which has further resulted in coaches wishing to undertake level 1 courses. Since the online course commenced in October 2008 two hundred and twenty four (224) Western NSW coaches have completed it with 113 completing the certificate during the past season.

Kinross College Orange again hosted the annual Cricket NSW level 2 course in April 2011 with Andrew Schaefer (Canowindra), Richard Newell (Bathurst) and David Glasson (Bathurst) successfully attending and completing the certificate.

Cricket Promotions – Back to the Bush Mudgee was this season the venue for the Back to the Bush promotion to help celebrate the 10th Annual Super 8s carnival. Former Western youth representative player and Speed Blitz Blues opening bowler Trent Copeland (ex Bathurst) attended for the day promotion and joined in the many games on offer.

Twenty seven (27) teams from Mudgee and other outlaying towns participated in the day which was very well organised by Alan Kerr (Rylstone PS). After the carnival, Trent helped coach the Mudgee u/12, u/14 and u/16 representative side giving some valuable tips along the way. Trent also conducted interviews with the local newspaper and television stations.

Seminars and Specialist Clinics The Western Zone coaching panel continues to provide the best possible coaching for the talented youth players and as such the squads were provided with the opportunity to learn from a number of former first class players and coaches.

In conjunction with the level 2 course in Orange the Western Boys U/17 Academy Squad attended a two day coaching/training program which included guest sessions with Troy Baker (routines/psychology) and Murray Bennett (spin bowlers). Cricket NSW Coach Educator David Patterson is acknowledged for providing this opportunity for the players. A further specialist program and coaches seminar was conducted in Bathurst with guest coach Murray Bennett. Under 14 and Under 17 Academy spin bowlers and selected spinners (10 players) were involved in the training session followed by a coaches seminar on spin were 23 people attended.

Western Boys Academy Program Two squads were selected, one U17 years and the other U14’s with players invited to participate in a pre season program under the direction of Head Coach Mark Gardner a former Sydney first grade player with assistance from members of the Western coaching panel including Regional Directors.

Both squads were provided with four coaching/training sessions held in, Dubbo, Orange and Cowra, culminating in trial matches for selection of the Western U17’s team. The U17’s team then played St George in the annual Brian Booth Trophy, which they won and then the next day played a combined Western Zone colts/Bradman Cup side to round out preparations for the Southern Country carnival.

The Bradman Cup side and Kookaburra Cup team both had a 2 day camp in January for preparation for their carnivals. This was the first time this has happened and was well received by all concerned. The Bradman Cup side had a trial match against the Colts team to allow both teams valuable match practice before their carnivals. .

Western Emerging Breakers Squad The girls Emerging Breakers squad was again lead by Carolyn Sheehan and assisted by Greg Griffith, Maree Cornish and members of the Western coaching panel who conduct a four session off season program. Most girls progressed to the open or junior sides for the state carnivals in October.

Emerging Blues Council initiated Emerging Blues programs for promising young players were conducted under the direction of the Regional Directors prior to the season. Macquarie CC held clinics in Dubbo and Narromine over four Sundays during August and September, Mitchell CC Sunday clinics spread over July to September for selected U12 – U16 players. Lachlan council continued their clinics in various towns this season as a talent identification process.

Over 90 talented young cricketers participated in these programs which are important in developing players for future representative teams.

Youth Carnivals The annual U13 years invitational carnival was held in Orange from 10th – 13th January with twelve teams competing: South Coast, Mitchell CC, Orange, Penrith, Shoalhaven, Wagga Wagga, ACT (two teams), Lachlan CC, Illawarra, Parramatta and Dubbo with Illawarra the winners.

The U15 years carnival was played from 17th – 20th January with eight teams competing: Shoalhaven, Mitchell, Dubbo, Orange (2 teams), ACT, Lachlan CC and South Cost with Lachlan CC the winners.

Macquarie Valley Council through the efforts of their junior secretary Graeme Dyball instigated a pre season Under 14’s invitational carnival conducted in Dubbo. The purpose of the carnival was to provide an identification process for the progression of players leading to the selection of the Western Zone U14’s team for the Kookaburra Cup carnival. Eight teams participated this season with the Lachlan Rebels team winning the Max Shepherd Shield.

Dubbo JCA and Lachlan Council teams again competed in the annual u/14 Bradman Foundation Invitational Carnival in Bowral between April 16-19 2011. Both teams finished undefeated in the new T20 carnival with Lachlan being victorious due to a superior run rate. Unfortunately these teams did not get to face each other in the carnival.

 Summary and 2011/12 Outline

Other notable achievements in 2011/2012 included:  (formerly of Young) made his debut for the Southern Redbacks during the season. Trent Copeland (formerly of Bathurst) continued his great form in the NSW SpeedBlitz Blues squad this season and was named the NSW Sheffield Shield Player of the Year at the Steve Waugh Medal to go with winning the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year Award at the Alan Border Medal presentation.. Trent was equal leading wicket taker in the competition (45 ) and bowled a massive 79 overs in the Sheffield Shield Final loss to Tasmania. Trent was also selected to play for the All Stars T20 team against the ACA Masters and played against England in Canberra in the Prime Ministers XI team. Nathan and Trent both named in the Australian “A” team to tour Zimbabwe in June/July 2011. Tim Armstrong (formerly of Dubbo) made his debut for NSW in the KFC Big Bash T20 competition and was part of the victorious Australian team that competed at the Hong Kong Sixes. Lisa Griffith and Keeghan Tucker were both selected in the Australian Shooting Stars (U21) squad for 2011/2012. Both of these players were both recipients of a Basil Sellers Scholarship which is awarded to country based cricketers to help achieve their cricketing dreams. Sara Darney, Brittany Naden, Emily Aberline, Pip Taylor all represented ACT in various teams this season. Emily Betts from Broken Hill represented SA U15s at the national championships. Scott Henry (formerly of Mudgee) had a stellar season with Sydney University in the Sydney 1st Grade competition winning the Benaud Medal for the player of the final for his knock of 132. Scott completed a fine double in 2010/2011 by also winning the Michael Bevan Medal for the player of the 1st grade limited overs final as Sydney Uni won both competitions.

Youth Cricketer of the Year (Lloyd Keir Medal) Andrew Page (Dubbo), NSW Country and Southern Country U17s Team, Western Zone Colts and U17s Team.

Volunteers Neil Doherty (Gulgong DCA) was chosen as the Western NSW Volunteer of the Year and attended the Steven Waugh Medal Dinner in Sydney on 25th March where he was acknowledged along with all other selected volunteers throughout the state.

Neil does an outstanding effort not only for Gulgong cricket but for the Mitchell Cricket Council (Vice- President and manager of the Colts team) and Western Zone Cricket (Vice-Chairman and manager of the Colts team). Neil has been a great contributor to cricket in the Western Region and is a deserved winner of this award.

Volunteers are our most important allies in continuing the growth and strength of cricket throughout Australia and a number of initiatives were put in place to assist in their roles. Namely: My Cricket website, playcricket.com, distribution of the “Well Played” Cricket Australia Junior Cricket policy, Cricket NSW Club raffle, Cricket NSW Volunteers Register and acknowledgement through awards such as caps and towels.

NSW Country Cricket Curator of the Year. Bruce Cousins (Orange City Council) was a much deserved winner of this award for 2011/2012 and has been many years in the making. Bruce and other ground staff in Orange have done a tremendous job in hosting the Country Cup and Plate finals over the past 3 seasons and for all games to be played over these years with over 100mls of rain falling over the Christmas break is a true testament to Bruce’s hard work and commitment in making Wade Park one of the best cricket grounds in the Western Region and Country NSW. Bruce will receive his award at the Country dinner in Orange in August 2011.

Other Highlights in 2010/2011  Cowra DCA (Southern U17s Carnival), Dubbo DCA (Country Colts Carnival) and Orange DCA (Country Plate Finals) must be congratulated for organising and in help running these very important country programs. Many good reports were received about the standard of organising of these carnivals. A big thank you and congratulations for all the people involved with making this happen.  Bathurst again hosted the finals of the Alan Davidson and Marie Cornish High School Knockout Competition.  Orange DCA made the Country Cup finals for the first time after beating Dubbo in the Western Zone final. Tamworth proved too good in their final 8 match in Gosford but after many years of trying and falling one hurdle short, Orange should be proud of their achievements. 6 Western teams nominated to play in the competition in 2010/2011  Blue Mountains made the Final of the Country Plate after defeating Temora in the semi finals. However, Goulburn were too strong in the final, winning by 7 wickets. This was Blue Mountains first year in the competition after participating in the Cup for many years and I am sure the experience gained will assist them in going one better in 2011/2012. 12 Western teams nominated to play in the competition in 2010/2012.

Moving Forward 2011/12 The most important concern for 2011/2012 is to arrest the decline of junior numbers and look at ways to encourage children to come back to the sport and to encourage new participants. If we do not do this then senior numbers in the next few years will start to see a decline. Initiatives to hopefully stop this decline includes increased school visits, more Super 8s carnivals, introduction of a new T20 club competition and school holiday coaching clinics. I will also be conducting visits to all the In2Cricket centres to talk to coordinators to find out what else can be done to help and I will be investigating the possibility of establishing new centres in towns were the program is not running.

Volunteers play a big part in cricket all over the area and whatever can be done to help the current volunteers and to grow the network will be a key initiative over the 2011/2012 season. Volunteer seminars will be held in various towns and continued training of the use of MyCricket website is paramount to this. I would like say a very big THANK YOU to all the volunteers in the Western Region. Without you this great game would not be possible in the region.

Western continues to have a proud record of conducting level 1 courses and I hope this continues into 2011/2012. I know the Regional Directors have some ideas and have already started to scout possible locations for courses. The continued promotion and encouragement of the Introduction to Coaching program will assist in this area.

We will continue to introduce new initiatives as we strive to ensure all players and volunteers enjoy their cricket experience. Apart from the initiatives outlined above, the continuation of the Carolyn “Russian” Sheehan Shield, more school based competitions (disabled students Super 8s and indoor cricket for example) and the introduction of Western Region finals in the T20 and Super 8s competitions will hopefully see more excitement and enjoyment of cricket over the region. The new School Heroes Program will be introduced to schools in the area as a way to change the perception that cricket is “boring” but rather a fun filled sport and activity.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank all association and council secretaries, Zone Chairman Dennis Cox, Zone Administrator Colin Wood, Regional Directors of Coaching, other members of the Zone Coaching panel and the many tireless volunteers that continue to assist me and make this wonderful game of cricket. You support this season has been greatly appreciated and I look forward with working with all of you in 2011/2012.

Western Zone Inter-Council Competitions  The Girls U/11 to U/16 years Competition was won by Macquarie Valley Council with an easy win over a much younger Lachlan team, but had a very close and exciting game against Mitchell Council. This age group appears to have some youngsters appearing on the scene with most Council’s reported to have some U/16 to U/18 year old player’s trialling.  Women’s High School to Open Age Group - This competition was funded by Kerry Packer Foundation with assistance from WZ under the organisation of WZ RCM - Matt Tabbernor. Mitchell Council played Lachlan in the final and won the inaugural Carolyn "Russian" Sheehan Trophy. Four teams participated - Wellington, Macquarie Valley, Mitchell and Lachlan CC. This competition has given many girls who don’t make representative teams or don’t play in Sydney/Canberra, a chance to play cricket with women still - hopefully more will become involved, especially with the opportunity to rep WZ in the planned Women’s Carnival due to be played in late January. Next season it is planned to be run over the whole cricket season so as not to cramp everything into the end and also hopefully not clash with Councils' inter-town games. Managers: Wellington - Marie Cornish Macqaurie Valley - Jaspal Bansal Mitchell - Frank Visser - Connelly & Rachel Hurn Lachlan - Jenny Lynne Watt

School Cricket PSSA  Lord Taveners KO – Wellington PS made the final 4 and finished 4th  State Carnival held on the Central Coast – Western finished 7th A big thank you to Liz Jeffery (Wellington PS) for all her years of coaching the Western PSSA Team. 2011 sees Jenny Lyn Watt appointed the new coach. The trials are being held in Cowra early September. CHS Numbers were down for Western Trials (personally I think this is a reflection on the coach and many players now attending Catholic or Independent Schools for the number being down). Jess Edwards - Mudgee was selected in the CHS 2nds and Emily Aberline was a reserve. The new women’s competition will be some sort of indication of where players are. Cornish KO Trophy – first time in many years no Western Team won through to the final 4 with Hunter Sports HS winning.

Player of the Year – Lisa Griffiths (Bathurst). Lisa is also a CNSW WZ Ambassador.

Basil Sellers Awards/Scholarships Western’s Lisa Griffiths and Keeghan Tucker were two of only 11 recipients that were awarded these Scholarships. There was also another girl from North Coast. Samantha Hinton was also a Scholarship recipient 3 years ago.

WZ Selector – Matthew Crawley

Open This year saw a return to the Western Zone Carnival, where Councils Lachlan, Macquarie Valley and Mitchell met each other once at Woodward Oval, Parkes. There was positive feedback from Players and Officials at the return to this round robin format.

Wet weather early in the season made it difficult for players to prepare for representative cricket, but this problem was statewide, not just restricted to Western. Considering these disruptions the Parkes venue was more than acceptable.

Ball dominated bat for the majority of the Carnival. Macquarie Valley were clearly the superior in all three disciplines of the game. This was reflected in the selection of the Western Zone squad, Macquarie Valley having nine (9) players included. This increased to 10 when Phil Dunford (Lachlan) withdrew and Jacob Harvey (Macquarie Valley) was his replacement.

A training session was organized in Dubbo prior to the Tamworth carnival and was a worthwhile exercise.

Western Zone was represented by Cameron Rosser © (Lachlan), Jackson Coote (Mitchell), Tim Cox (MVCC), Jacob Harvey (MVCC), Paul Hulthen (MVCC), Jordan Moran (MVCC), Mitchell O’Connor (MVCC), Sam Pararajasingham (MVCC), Tom Quilter (MVCC), Ian Redpath (MVCC), Pat Rosser (Lachlan), Jason Ryan (MVCC), Ben Strachan (MVCC).

Colts After much discussion a one day 60 over game was scheduled in Dubbo. A combined Lachlan / Macquarie Valley team defeated Mitchell.

Macquarie Valley again dominated at the selection table.

Although some expressed disappointment at not having a Lachlan side present, from the selectors view point this contest was of a high standard.

We have some very promising Under 21’s in the Zone at present and careful consideration must take place as to how we best maximize their talents.

Western Zone was represented by Josh Toole © (Mitchell), Cameron Beach (MVCC), Keiran Brien (MVCC), Jacob Bruce (MVCC), Jackson Coote (Mitchell), Joe Coughlan (Mitchell), Jason Date (Mitchell), Peter Guthrie (Lachlan), Jacob Harvey (MVCC), Andrew Page (MVCC), Jordan Peacock (MVCC), Matt Saul (MVCC), Josh Smith (MVCC).

WZ Umpires Representative - Stephen Poole

2010-2011 was once more a busy time for activities in Western Zone umpiring (despite the constant weather interruptions) with many highlights throughout the year:

A Training Course for new umpires was conducted in Orange prior to season start facilitated by Darren Goodger, Darrell Hair, Nick Fowler and Stephen Poole. This was also an opportunity for existing umpire members to update to the 2010 Edition of the Laws. Fifteen attended the course with ten sitting and passing the examination- this was the first course with a 100% pass rate! There have been at least five new members of NSWCU&SA approved to date as a result.

Greg Jones (Bathurst) was elevated to the full Country Panel and John DeLyall maintained his place on the Supplementary Panel for 2010-11. Both were invited to attend (along with your Zone Representative) a weekend in Scone providing professional update sessions and an introduction to the new 2010 Code of Laws. Attendees were also examined on the new MCC 2010 Code to prepare for the coming season and adoption of this new Code. Sessions were presented by Darrell Hair, Darren Goodger, Alan Mantle (Sport Psychology), Keith Griffith (Country Umpire Advisor) and each Zone Representative was asked to present on activities within their respective zones.

2010-11 season saw the introduction of a Zone based “Development Panel” of umpires. Along with our Country Panel members Greg Jones and John DeLyall the following were appointed to this panel in Western Zone– Cooper Pike (Dubbo), Mark Waldren and Graeme Glazebrook (Bathurst)

The following Western Zone Development Panel umpires received appointments (along with Peter Weston) to the Southern Country U17 Carnival in Cowra in October – Greg Jones, John DeLyall, Cooper Pike, Mark Waldren and Graeme Glazebrook. This was an excellent exposure for the newer members of the panel and feedback has been positive.

All early round matches in the SCG Country Cup and most Country Plate matches were officiated by NSWCU&SA members, with Western Zone Panel members of course dominating these appointments. Round 3 & 4 matches were covered by WZ Panel members.

Greg Jones received appointments to the SCG Cup finals on the Central Coast between Christmas and New Year and the NSW Country Colts Carnival in Dubbo in January. John DeLyall was appointed to the Colts Carnival in Dubbo.

Your Zone Representative was again appointed as Match Referee for the Country Cup Final at the SCG. I was also privileged to once more act as Master of Ceremonies at the Annual Country Dinner held in August (in Sydney at Darling Harbour for the first time in quite a number of years) We all look forward to this years dinner to be held in Orange as part of their Centenary Celebrations.

Fifteen country based umpires accepted an invitation and officiated in Sydney Grade on the weekend of 5,6 February –among them Greg Jones (1st Grade) and Cooper Pike (3rds). This round will see the first occasion of two country umpires officiating a 1st Grade match (Neil Findlay and Adam Marshall). It was great to catch up with other country umpires at their matches and see the comraderie with their Sydney based confreres! This is a wonderful experience for these umpires and a great aid to their ongoing development and progression.

On the training front a number of activities are scheduled or in planning for the winter months:-

 A training course has been scheduled for Mudgee on 4,5 June at Mudgee Soldiers Club. A further course is to be held in Bathurst on 28,29 May (likely All Saints College)  Enquiries have been made with regard to courses in Cobar/ Bourke and a central location in Lachlan  Council (? Forbes). This year is likely to see an update to the Level 2 Accreditation –there are many umpires whose accreditation will be up for renewal this calendar year.

Mitchell Cricket Umpires Association

Administering umpiring within the boundaries of Mitchell Cricket Council, Mitchell Cricket Umpires Association continues to function with active branches in Bathurst, Orange and Blue Mountains. Combined with members in the other towns MCUA provides coverage to representative matches for Mitchell Cricket Council and SCG Cup and Country Plate Rounds.

The local branches organize umpiring for their respective local associations and 2010-11 has again seen excellent numbers particularly in Bathurst where a good body of umpires meets regularly to discuss issues with laws and playing conditions. Bathurst will this year host the NSWCU&SA Annual Convention which will be a great boost to umpiring in the area. There is also some hope that a Scorers Training Course may be conducted at the same time. The Training Course conducted in Orange lead to an increase in active umpires in the area and consequent coverage of most senior grade cricket throughout the season. This naturally saw higher numbers available for representative cricket in both seniors and juniors.

Congratulations to all Western umpires for their commitment throughout the year and particularly those rewarded with finals appointments.

My thanks must go to all umpiring members in Western Zone and to the executive members of our affiliated associations Macquarie Valley CUA and Mitchell CUA (incl. member branches).

Macquarie Valley Cricket Umpires Association CUA - Glenn Shepherd - President

The MVCUA had another highly successful season both on and off the field. Around 90% of all Saturday games (3 grades with 3 games/grade) saw at least one umpire supplied, continuing the high level commitment provided over the past several seasons. The players are extremely appreciative of the opportunity to have an independent umpire, particularly the lower grades who had generally missed out until the last 2 or 3 years.

Representative cricket can be a challenge for players and umpires alike, with distance and time making commitment difficult in the bush. We cover the local inter-town competition (Brewery Shield) as well as the SCG Cup and Plate. We have been very fortunate to have a core group who have consistently made themselves available for these games, so special thanks go to Cooper Pike, John de Lyall and Ernie Tink.

In his capacity on the Country Development Panel, John de Lyall officiated in the NSW Country Championships held in Dubbo and the U17 Southern Carnival in Cowra. He was joined in Cowra by Cooper Pike and both commented on the opportunity to receive some feedback from the upper echelons of the NSWCUA. Cooper also stood in a 3rd grade game in the SCA and relished the challenge of learning a whole new set of playing conditions as he’d already mastered the 4 local ones! Congratulations to these two gentlemen for constantly challenging their skills and improving their craft.

We also had the opportunity to welcome back Dave Davis and John Murray to the umpiring ranks after a number of years away from the game. We hope to organise another training and/or update day in the off-season to continue to hone our skills. Along with the DDCA, we have continued to implement a captain feedback program, and this has contributed to assisting our ongoing improvement. We had a very successful season-ending dinner, and to date no charges have been laid. Many thanks go to our fantastic sponsors at the Pastoral Hotel.

Overall, I’d like to thank the members of the MVCUA Executive and all umpires (and partners) for another great year. Enjoy the off-season and be ready to go again in 2011-12. And remember, “Persistence is the twin sister of excellence. One is a matter of quality; the other, a matter of time.”

THE POOLE THEORY: A study in Physics for the HOWZAT AWARD, 2011.

I’ve sat and made some notes about the times that lie ahead And I’ve got to tell the truth, that it fills me with some dread; I’ve listened to the qualified and those who know the score And they reckon there’s a shock, that we surely can’t ignore.

As we sat there after dining with a bottle of good red, I listened to their commonsense, before we went to bed; We talked about the quality of several vintage wines Then somehow got to Iron Ore that we dig up from our mines.

Then came Coal and Gas and Gold that we export overseas In tonnes that number millions, causing Steve’s hypotheses. He said and Darrell nodded in agreement with his thoughts, We’d soon be out of balance, shipping all this from our ports.

The laws of nature tell us what is heavy, what is light So surely it must follow that we’ll turn to stay upright. Their oratory had begun, Pooley opened his debate And Dazzer painted pictures, all about earth’s shifting weight.

If we hollow out the centre of the Southern Hemisphere And trade it with the Northern, then the balance will go queer. When gravity takes over as it surely always does, Earth will flip itself around, upside down will be a buzz!!

The Great Divide will be the Alps and we’ll ski the western side, Aware the sandstone curtain, drops us on a thrilling ride. The Murray-Darling system won’t be running dry again But how will Froggies live with, a slow flowing River Seine?

What if Pommies learn to wash and fill London’s tubs with silt? Will Scotsmen miss their Whisky or swap shorts for tartan kilts? I asked a silly question, threw it out in idle jest; Would the dawn of every morning, see the sun rise in the west?

Max Shepherd adjourned a 19 year association with cricket in Western NSW on August 1, 2010. He ‘retired’ as Cricket NSW’s longest serving employee, with 23 years under his floppy white hat.

Max and his wife Penny returned to Albury and the chance to reconnect family ties in an extended family environment.

Max has rightly received many accolades and tributes for the enormous job he did for cricket in his area, stretching from Broken Hill to the Blue Mountains.

Originally Max was the Country Cricket Co Coordinator for NSW, and was later joined by John Sullivan (Northern) and Warren Smith (Southern) as his deputies. The role evolved across Country NSW and Max recently became one of eight Regional Cricket Managers, serving the needs of cricket and cricketers in Western NSW.

Max will be missed by the cricket family in Western NSW and he is always welcome in our part of the world.

Bon Voyage Max and Penny

WZ Open – Matthew Crawley

The 2010/11 CCNSW Carnival was held in Tamworth (Central North Zone) from 26 to 28 November 2011. Western Zone were represented by Cameron Rosser © (Lachlan), Jackson Coote (Mitchell), Tim Cox (MVCC), Jacob Harvey (MVCC), Paul Hulthen (MVCC), Jordan Moran (MVCC), Mitchell O’Connor (MVCC), Sam Pararajasingham (MVCC), Tom Quilter (MVCC), Ian Redpath (MVCC), Pat Rosser (Lachlan), Jason Ryan (MVCC), Ben Strachan (MVCC).

Day one saw Western take on Illawarra. Many believed this was our best chance in several years to progress to the winning pool. After winning the toss, Western slumped to 5 for 50 inside the first hour. A fight back led by Ian Redpath (68) and Pat Rosser (51) helped resurrect our innings. Valuable lower order contributions from Tim Cox, Jason Ryan and Ben Strachan took the total to a defendable 234. Our innings came to a close with six over’s remaining.

Illawarra innings mirrored ours – a collapse at the start followed by middle order resistance. Tim Cox and Jackson Coot tore through the top order, Coote claiming three wickets in a lively spell, including the prize scalp of Graeme Batty, Illawarra reeling at 4 for 40. At this point the game got away from us. The score advance to 146 before Sam Pararajasingham was introduced with an immediate result. Despite a valiant attempt late in the innings by our bowlers to halt the run chase, especially Tom Quilter, who’s last seven over’s returned 2 for 12, Illawarra scrambled over the line eight wickets down. A disappointing result. Best were Ian Redpath, Pat Rosser and Jackson Coote.

The second day against North Coast we appeared to be in control for most of the match, but still had to fight hard for victory, after a collapse chasing North Coasts’ modest total of 162. Tim Cox led the way with the new ball, 1 for 12 from his eight overs. Jacob Harvey with 2 for 28 also made inroads. Pressure was continually applied by Sam Pararajasingham (1 for 28) and spinners Tom Quilter (2 for 47) and Pat Rosser (4 for 28). North Coast were all out inside 52 overs.

Westerns run chase began confidently, Jordan Moran a breezy 32 and 26 from Mitch O’Connor. Just as we appeared to be cruising we lost 6 for 52.Jason Ryan (49 no) then took control of the situation and with support from Tim Cox and Tom Quilter saw Western home in the 51st over. Best were Jason Ryan, Tim Cox and Pat Rosser.

On the final day against Southern Zone the top order clicked and posted a commanding 7 for 268 from 50 overs. The highlight was a 103 run partnership from Paul Hulthen (59) and Mitch O’Connor (55). Finishing touches were put on the innings by Cameron Rosser (30), Pat Rosser (20) and Jason Ryan (25 no).

Tim Cox again starred with the ball, claiming 3 for 27 from his 10 overs and was very unlucky not to finish with five or six victims. Pat Rosser became Westerns leading wicket taker with3 for 46, while Sam Pararajasingham chipped in with 2 for 27. Southern’s innings finished on 243. Best were Tim Cox, Paul Hulthen and Mitch O’Connor.

After the initial disappointment of day one the team responded well, with two strong victories, moving from seventh to fifth in the rankings.

Congratulations to Tim Cox on his Country selection. A fine achievement.

Tom Quilter must be considered unlucky not to retain his position, while Pat Rosser and Mitch O’Connor had solid carnivals. Jackson Coote and Jacob Harvey both impressed on debut. Special mention must be made of wicket keeper Jason Ryan, who kept his wicket intact for the three days.

WZ Colts – Neil Doherty

The team was announced after the trial match in Dubbo between Mitchell Cricket Council and a combined Macquarie Valley/Lachlan Cricket Council. This team played in the Country Colts Carnival in Dubbo from 21st January to 23rd January 2011.

The team was Josh Toole (Capt), Cameron Beach, Keiran Brien, Jacob Bruce, Jackson Coote, Joe Coughlan, Jason Date, Peter Guthrie, Jacob Harvey, Andrew Page, Jordan Peacock, Matt Saul, Josh Smith. Jordan Moran was Coach and I was the manager.

We played North Coast on day one. Western won the toss and batted first and made 7 for 245 off 60 overs. Josh Toole 56 and Joe Coughlan 29 batted very well to consolidate our innings. We were 5 for 89 and Josh and Joe had a partnership of 80 runs together. Jacob Harvey 36 no and Andrew Page 26 no batted well till the end of the innings. North Coast started their innings well with an opening partnership of 82 runs. Josh Smith claimed the wickets of both openers to take 2 for 27. Matt Saul bowled very good line and length to take 4 for 62 off 19.2 overs with Keiran Brien taking 2 for 35. North Coast were dismissed for 213.

We played Central Coast on day two. Central Coast won the toss and batted first to make 6 for 264 off 60 overs. Josh Smith took 2 for 17 and Jackson Coote took 2 for 61. Western replied with 240 runs being dismissed in the 59th over. Josh Toole 48, Keiran Brien 45 and Josh Smith 40 no batted well. This game was lost because our fielding was not the same standard as Central Coast, we conceded 88 runs in the last 10 overs and none of our batsmen went on to make a big score.

We played Southern Zone on day three. Western batted first and made 8 for 222 off 50 overs. Jason Date 85 no batted very well, Jordan Peacock 33 and Josh Toole 32 also batted well. Southern Zone made 158 runs in reply. Jacob Harvey 4 for 26 and Jacob Bruce 2 for 26 off their 10 overs were the best bowlers. This was a good result and we finished third in the Carnival. Jackson Coote and Josh Toole were picked in the Country Colts team. Western Zone Under 21

Back row: Jordan Moran, Keiran Brien, Andrew Page, Jacob Bruce, Jackson Coote, Josh Smith, Jacob Harvey, Neil Doherty Front row: Matt Saul, Jason Date, Josh Toole, Cameron Beach, Jo Coughlan, Peter Guthrie, Jordan Peacock. WZ Academy and WZ Under 17 – Rod Kershaw

The U17 squads commenced their training under the guidance of their coach Mark Gardner with a two day camp on July 8-9th at Kinross to utilise the visiting coaches from the Level 2 coaching being conducted there. Other clinics were scheduled through August and September with Dubbo and Cowra going ahead but Molong was washed out. A two day selection trial was then held in Bathurst on the 25th and 26th September. From the selection trial 13 players were selected in a squad to represent WZ. The team contained 5 U16 boys who will go on to be the senior players in the Bradman Cup team and return next year hopefully to do the same job in the U17’s. Two trial matches were organised, the first being the Brian Booth trophy against St George U16’s Green Shield team, the second against the boys who missed selection, mostly U16’s and this team was filled up to make up numbers with some of last year’s U17’s. Both matches were played in Cowra. WZ U17 V St George WZ batted first and compiled 7/259 of 50 overs, Cosgrove’s 98 a highlight an opening partnership of 46 between Kenny and Wells and 80 between Cosgrove and Kershaw. Tucker 8 overs 3/39, Hope 10 overs 3/16, and Caldwell 10 overs 2/27. St George found the going difficult and lost regular wickets against good tight bowling supported well in the field. A 42 from opener Edwards and a rear guard 38 from Ascoli got them to 9/194. WZ U17 V WZ combined Played on synthetic after overnight rain. U17’s bowled first and found the slippery conditions difficult but Hoare 9 overs 2/16 and Tucker 10 overs 3/12 bowled very well considering the wet creases. Peter Guthrie 55 Ben Schaefer 27 with WZ combined making 120. Wells and Page made over 50 each and the U17’s were only 1 down with a few runs left to get, but ended up 4 down when the total was passed. U17’s Southern Carnival in COWRA. WZ V Illawarra, Twigg Oval Won toss and batted. Unable to establish partnerships and with the loss of regular wickets from mostly poor shot selection losing 5 wickets quickly struggled to 104 and only used 41 overs. Bowling Hoare 5 overs 2/16 a good spell of pace with good length, boys put on a excellent effort in the field and had Illawarra 7 down going past the score, they went on to make 168 after the pressure was off. Lesson taken of course they have to bat out the overs and consider their shot selection and the importance of turning the strike over. Page the only batsmen to look comfortable. WZ V South Coast, Holman Oval Lost toss, South Coast bat first and go on to make 201. A brilliant opening spell of bowling from Hoare with his 5 overs including 4 maidens. The fielding was a little scrappy but to restrict SC to 201 after their opening partnership produced 99 runs was a good effort. Batting a large improvement in partnerships 1-30, 2-67, 3-110, 4-124, then lost their way a little chasing runs due to two rain interruptions causing loss of momentum with batsmen having to restart. All-round better effort against a very good side. Wells made an excellent 64 having to start 3 times. WZ V Riverina, Holman Oval WZ batt first and only manages to compile 91 runs after again losing early wickets. Hope 18 and Haylock 14. Riverina have a good opening partnership of 50 before their first wicket then lose another 8 before they nervously pass the total. Hoare 8 overs 2/24, Tucker 7 overs 1/15, Hope 7 overs 3/13. The fighting effort in the field after the drinks break had them just fall short of a win.

This group of young cricketers as you know never won any games at the carnival but they fought hard and made every game a tight contest. They all showed the disappointments of the losses as individuals and as a team but throughout the carnival they conducted themselves on and off the field in a courteous and sportsman like manner. The programme including the trial games was very well run and all coaches and administrators are to be congratulated and thanked for their time and efforts.

WZ Bradman Cup – Rod Kershaw

A two day coaching clinic held in Dubbo in early Jan and run by Coach Jordan Moran. The first day consisted of fitness and then a nets session. Day two was a game against the WZ colt’s side. WZ U16 v Southern Win the toss and bat on synthetic, overcast and showery conditions. Loss of early wickets and unable to establish early partnerships battle their way to 109 but manage to bat their 50. Stuart Fredericks 35 no, Hayden Sealy 20. On the very long and slow outfield this is a competitive total. Southern pass the total 5 down in the second last over. Alex Umber 10 overs 1/25, Max Hope 6 overs 2/16. WZ U16 v North Coast Rain again and on Synthetic. Win toss and Bat, a better start in the upper order with partnerships starting to develop. Hayden Sealy 35, Max Hope 21, Stuart Fredericks 17. The Bowling (with a very strong easterly crosswind) today was not as consistent with too many short balls that were easily dispatched. North Coast lost 6 wickets but passed the total with plenty of overs to spare. Liam Gough 8 overs 1/19, Brent Tucker 6 overs 2/23 and Hayden Sealy 6 overs 2/16. WZ U16 v Newcastle Newcastle hot favourites. Today’s game is on turf, with overnight rain and showers, about an hour late starting. Win the toss and send them in. Better application by the pace bowlers especially with length. Newcastle end up with 2/118 from 36 overs, the match shortened due to the lost time from lengthy rain interruptions. Batting today is very positive and everyone bats with confidence and goes through with their shots. WZ go past the total with 3 overs to spare 6 down.

Wollongong Bradman Cup Carnival, even as rain affected as it was, developed the games of all the young WZ players. Winning 1 from 3, and winning convincingly over the eventual winners. The other two games were good contests and in hindsight with the conditions favouring the teams batting second they may have been good tosses to lose. This group of boys are to be commended on their behaviour and very positive attitudes on and off the field and throughout the many rain interruptions. Jordan Moran is to be congratulated on his coaching style and the role model he portrayed to this very young and influential team. We are very fortunate to have him within the zone.

Western Zone reached the final of the Kookaburra Cup with three wins from three starts in the pool matches. Our loss in the final to Central North was disappointing but not catastrophic, as players and coaching staff alike are convinced that the result would have been reversed if the toss had gone our way.

Our first match against Riverina was an early indication of the depth and resolve of out batting. A modest bowling effort with too many wides and no balls allowed Riverina to post a healthy 7/189 after winning the toss and batting on a slow outfield. Our most economical bowlers were Jeremy Judge with 1/19 off 8, and Alex Johnston 10 overs for 15 runs. James Ford bowled with pace and bounce and took two wickets. In chasing the total, the boys stayed with the game plan that would serve us well for the rest of the carnival. Cautious starts, well taken singles by the top order (Litchfield 48, Hoswell 17, Crowther 24, Hunt 14) gave us a platform from which to chase down the Riverina total. Alex Johnston timed his innings perfectly, hit some boundaries, but it was mostly the sharp singles Jeremy Judge and Kurt Davenport that ran the fielding ragged. The Riverina total was passed with two over’s to spare, Alex making 50 not out.

The game against Central Coast followed a similar pattern to game one. Losing the toss and allowing what was an above par score of 143 on a difficult wicket. Again, our bowling at times failed to sustain pressure on the opposition. William Wolter and Henry Hunt took three wickets each. Steady batting with starts by all the top order put is in position to win with four balls to spare. Top scorers were Crowther- 30, Alex Johnston 27, playing a similar hand at a crucial time, Wolter- 29, who was moved up the order following an injury to Jamie Hoswell while fielding. Jeremy Judge was involved in a crucial partnership with Wolter.

This was effectively a semi final, as both sides were undefeated to this point. After losing the toss for the third time, we were sent in on a grassy but hard wicket. After losing the early wicket of Hunt for 6, managed a series of steady partnerships that allowed us to bat through 50 overs. Charlie Litchfield top scored with 53. Crowther again made a start. Some late hitting from McNaught, Ford and Sharpe lifted the final total to a respectable 9/167. This was easily our best bowling effort for the week, with very little given away in loose bowling, wides or no balls. The sustained pressure saw wickets fall steadily during the Newcastle innings, with an eventual total of 112 all out in the 41st over. Nathan Anderson bowled with pace and rhythm to finish with 2/16 off 8. Henry Hunt very economical with 2/12 off 8. Jacob McNaught also took two wickets.

Kookaburra Cup Final The boys were full of confidence going into this match. Even after losing our fourth toss in a row, the team had chased well on the first two days, and were ready to restrict the opposition score. An injury to James Ford during warm up just before going onto the field was a disruption that no doubt had an influence on the final score we would be chasing.

The Central North openers posted an opening partnership of 298 which effectively sealed our fate. No chances were dropped during the partnership, and once the openers were removed, we were able to restrict the final total to 3/337. The boys chased down every run in the closing overs, with all the team believing we could chase down a score. Jeremy Judge took it on himself to bowl 10 overs following the injuries to Ford and Johnston. Charlie Litchfield and Jacob McNaught were the wicket takers. The task of chasing down the total was met with positive intent by the whole side. We were in front of the Central North run rate and only two wickets down after 25 overs, and believing we were going to win at that stage. However, a steady fall of wickets eventually put the required rate out of reach. Charlie Litchfield top scored with 53, Anthony Johnston made 47 off just 33 balls. Lachlan Sharpe made a courageous 35 and the rest of the top order all made starts. We finished at 9/245 after 50 overs, being the third highest total of the carnival week (the other two made by Central North)

I believe the week was a very successful one for Western Zone 14's, and hopefully an indication of a strong showing at Bradman Cups and U17 Carnivals in the next year or so. Our batting was impressive, our fielding was the best at the carnival, as expressed by several observers (although I feel there is more improvement to be had) and we only dropped 2 catches during the week. Jeremy Judge was impressive as Captain, still learning, but making many correct decisions under pressure, and batting in difficult situations each day.

Our bowling was our only weakness during the carnival. At several stages we were unable to sustain pressure with line and length bowling (with the exception of the Newcastle game) This is definitely something to work on with the Zone squads.

Three bowlers sustained injuries during the weak, serious enough to make them ineffective on day three and or four. Pre game, post game stretching , and after match pool recovery sessions were performed during the carnival, but the injuries still occurred. More research into management of players fitness levels during carnival week could be valuable for the future.
