Victoria Beckham: Coming to America AUSTRALIA’S MOST TRUSTED NEWS AND CURRENT AFFAIRS EMBARGO: 6PM OCTOCBER 11, 2017 Imparja is Australia’s most trusted, dependable and credible source of news and current affairs. For more than 60 years, Australians have turned to Nine News to be reliably informed about matters affecting their lives In 2017, Nine News once again took out the ratings crown for its 6.00pm bulletins in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, a result that drives our team to work harder to provide the most accurate and the up-to-date news service possible. This year, on top of the 3.00pm Nine News Now bulletin, we also rolled out a series of state-based 4.00pm afternoon bulletins to complement our suite of evening bulletins. Imparja is also home to Australia’s fastest growing and most informative regional news bulletins. Every night of the week, Nine News broadcasts 27 simultaneous 6.00pm bulletins across our country. Returning to our screens for an historic 40th season in 2018, 60 Minutes has consistently set the benchmark for unveiling the biggest exclusive stories every Sunday night. Veteran reporters Liz Hayes, Liam Bartlett, Tara Brown, Ross Coulthart, Allison Langdon, Charles Woolley and Peter Stefanovic continue to deliver cutting-edge journalism and ensure that 60 Minutes remains Australia’s number one weekly public affairs program. A Current Affair has long been the voice of everyday Australians, standing up for the underdogs and exposing crime, fraud, and dodgy practices wherever they may exist, all while managing to entertain us with the latest entertainment, technology and celebrity news. It continues to provide a service for ordinary Aussies in their day-to-day lives, featuring an elite team of respected Australian journalists. Tracy Grimshaw returns in 2018 to host A Current Affair, which has firmly cemented itself as the preferred viewing choice in the 7.00pm prime-time slot, a consistent winner night after night. After celebrating its landmark 35th year on air, TODAY is back in 2018 waking up with Australia. Hosts Karl Stefanovic and Lisa Wilkinson, along with Entertainment Editor Richard Wilkins, News presenter Sylvia Jeffreys, Sports presenter Tim Gilbert, Weather presenter Natalia Cooper and Finance Editor Ross Greenwood, will bring you all the latest in news, current affairs, sport, politics, entertainment, fashion, health and lifestyle from Australia and around the world. Sonia Kruger and David Campbell will return to our screens for TODAY Extra in 2018. They’ll continue to bring the latest in news, current affairs, fashion and celebrity gossip into lounge rooms across Australia throughout their morning. Australians will continue to start their weekend on a high, joining Deb Knight, Tom Steinfort and News presenter Jayne Azzopardi for Weekend TODAY as they deliver all the latest in news, current affairs, sport, politics, entertainment, fashion, health and lifestyle from Australia and around the world. Nine.com.au, including 9News.com.au, remains in the top tier of Australian news websites and ranked as the 2nd commercial news website in the category in July. With a unique audience of 4.499 million, it takes you on the story wherever you’re watching – mobile, tablet, desktop. Imparja has also seen strong growth across the 9Honey lifestyle network of sites with 1.942m logging on to its lifestyle websites which include 9Honey News, 9Honey Coach, 9Honey Kitchen, 9Honey Style, 9Honey Homes, 9Honey Travel. Nine News is pervasive. Our aim is to be the go-to place for breaking stories, for editorial content, for all things news, for all Australians, for all ages. We strive to ensure that our news is available in every format our audiences want to consume it. In 2018, we will continue to build the largest news content organisation in Australia, a platform that provides the opportunity for viewers and brands to connect with a huge and highly engaged audience. .

PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE BEYOND JOURNALISM: INFOTAINMENT, SATIRE AND AUSTRALIAN TELEVISION STEPHEN HARRINGTON BCI(Media&Comm), BCI(Hons)(MediaSt) Submitted April, 2009 For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Creative Industries Faculty Queensland University of Technology, Australia 1 2 STATEMENT OF ORIGINAL AUTHORSHIP The work contained in this thesis has not been previously submitted to meet requirements for an award at this or any other higher education institution. To the best of my knowledge and belief, the thesis contains no material previously published or written by another person, except where due reference is made. _____________________________________________ Stephen Matthew Harrington Date: 3 4 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the changing relationships between television, politics, audiences and the public sphere. Premised on the notion that mediated politics is now understood “in new ways by new voices” (Jones, 2005: 4), and appropriating what McNair (2003) calls a “chaos theory” of journalism sociology, this thesis explores how two different contemporary Australian political television programs (Sunrise and The Chaser’s War on Everything) are viewed, understood, and used by audiences. In analysing these programs from textual, industry and audience perspectives, this thesis argues that journalism has been largely thought about in overly simplistic binary terms which have failed to reflect the reality of audiences’ news consumption patterns. The findings of this thesis suggest that both ‘soft’ infotainment (Sunrise) and ‘frivolous’ satire (The Chaser’s War on Everything) are used by audiences in intricate ways as sources of political information, and thus these TV programs (and those like them) should be seen as legitimate and valuable forms of public knowledge production.
