H.S. MATH CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED May 20, 1985

Winners of the 28th Annual High School Honors Mathematics Contest were announced Saturday night (May 18) at an awards banquet in the Muir Dining Commons at the University of , .

In team competition, High School took first place in the city, and Helix High was number one in the county. The Bishop's Schools led the small school division.

In individual competition, Alan Hu, La Jolla High, placed first, followed by Stephen D'Angelo, Poway, second; Eric Anderson, La Jolla, third; Theodore Lee, La Jolla, fourth, and Matthew Friedman, La Jolla Country Day, fifth.

Among the teams, Crawford and Point Loma placed second and third, respectively, in the city, and Poway and Orange Glen ranked second and third, respectively, in the county. La Jolla Country Day and San Diego High were runners up in the small schools team division.

Contest sponsors are the UCSD Mathematics Department, the Greater San Diego Mathematics Council, the California Mathematics Council and the Departments of Education of San Diego City and County.

"The purpose of the contest is to recognize and encourage students who enjoy and excel in mathematics," contest coordinator John J. Wavrick, a UCSD mathematics professor, said. "Why should people in athletics get all the fame and glory?"

The contest was established in 1957 by Convair in response to the Sputnik crisis, when U.S. business and educational leaders took measures to "catch up" to the Soviet Union in math and science education. Convair is no longer a sponsor.

Eighty-five top math students took the three-hour examination administered by contest sponsors on May 11.
