District Population Statistics, 39-Tehri-Garhwal, Uttar Pradesh -~------~--- -------- -_ ----I I ~ I Census of India, 1951 DISTRICT POPULATION STATISTICS I UTTAR PRADESH 39-TEHRI·GARHWAL DISTRICT 315.42 1951 TEH DPS FOREWORD THE Uttar Pradesh Government asked me in March, 1952, (0 supply chenl for the purposes of elections to local bodies population statistics with separation for scheduled castes (i) mohallaJward-wise for urban areas, and (ii) village-wise for rural areas. The Census Tabulation Plan did not provide for sorting of scheduled castes population for areas smaller than a tehsil or urban tract and the request from the Uttar Pradesh Government came when the slip sorting had been finished and the Tabulation Offices closed. As the census slips are mixed up for the purposes of sorting in one lot for a tehsil or urban tract, collection of data regarding scheduled castes populadon by mohallas/wards and villages would have involved enormous labour and expense if sorting of the slips had been taken up afresh. Fortunately, however, a secondary census record, viz. the National Citizens' Register. in which each slip has been copied, was available. By singular foresight it had been pre· pared mohalla/ward-wise for urban areas and village-wise for rural areas. Th e required information has, therefore, been extracted from this record. 2. In the above circumstances there is a slight difference in the figures of population as arrived at by an earlier sorting of the slips and as now determined by counting from the National Citizens' Register. This difference has been ace en - cuated by an order passed by me during the later count from the National Register of Citizens as follows:- (i) Count Ahirwars of Farrukhabad District, R.aidas and Bhagat as ·Chamars'. (ii) Count Bhangi, Khakrob, Sweepers, Harijan, Mehtar, Jamadar and Achhut as 'Balmikis'. The fact) that some members of the scheduled castes had returned their caste by names which did not find place in the schedule as notified under section 341 of the Constitution of India, came to my notice during the course of the earlier sorting, but at too late a stage to enable me to pass definite and uniform orders. I have tried co rectify it by passing this order for the purpose of counting from [he National Citizens) Register. The differences in the figures of the two counts have been clearly set out in the cables that follow. 3. The figures of total population of mohallas/wards have been arrived at by actual counting from the National 'Citizens} Register, 'while the figures of total population of villages are those determined by actual sorting of the slips and recorded in tbe Primary Census Abstract. 4. In the Summary of Urban Population the code number of each town has been given. The first element of the code gives the code number of the district, the second the code number of the tehsil (or towns of over one lakh population) and the third the code number of the town (other than a town -of one lakh population).     Research Study No. 2013/02 Baseline Data on Horticultural Crops in Uttarakhand Usha Tuteja Agricultural Economics Research Centre University of Delhi Delhi -110 007 July, 2013 PREFACE The present study sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India aims to collect data on area, production and yield of horticultural crops and compare with the baseline data collected from secondary sources. The study also presents problems encountered by grass root officials in data collection. In order to fulfill these objectives, primary as well as secondary sources of data have been used. Primary data were collected through a field survey of horticultural crops growers in the selected three districts (Dehradun, Haridwar, and Tehri Garhwal) of Uttarakhand. The results of this study reveal (i) area, production and yield of horticultural crops grew at the rate of 3.11, 4.41 and 1.27 per cent per annum in India between 1991-92 and 2011-12, (ii) banana, mango and citrus among fruits, potato, tomato and onion among vegetables, garlic, turmeric and ginger among spices contributed 66, 57 and 53 per cent respectively in total production of these crops in India during 2011-12, (iii) the contribution of Uttarakhand was 0.96 in fruits and 0.7 per cent in vegetables. This contribution is low looking at the potential in the state, (iv) the share of fruits, vegetables, spices and flowers in total production of horticultural crops in Uttarakhand was around 54, 41, 5 and 0.39 per cent during 2010-11, (v) mango, apple and citrus in fruits , potato, vegetable pea and tomato in vegetables contributed more than 50 per cent in total production of fruits and vegetables in the state, (vi) Dehradun, Nainital and Almora are leading districts in production of horticultural crops in the state.

Introduction Uttarakhand, a hill state of India, lies in the northern part of country in the loftiest Himalayan mountain range. It covers in total 53,066 km2 area. Out of which approximately 48,000 km2 (90%) falls in hilly terrain (Joshi, 2004). Geologically this area is complex and forms a part of the young Himalayan belt. Tehri Garhwal is one of the largest districts in the hill state of Uttarakhand, which falls in hilly terrain. Its administrative headquarters is at New Tehri. The district has a population of 604,747 (in 2001 census), a 16.15% increase over the previous decade. It is surrounded by four districts, viz., Rudraprayag in the east, Dehradun in the west, Uttarkashi in the north, and Pauri Garhwal in the south. 2. Overview of Mining Activity in the District In the earlier time the mud houses/buildings were constructed with the use of mud. However with the passage of time, new techniques of development activities were started. As such the demand of Minor Mineral started on an increasing trend. In order to meet the requirement of raw material for construction, the extraction of sand, gravel & boulder carried out manually / semi- mechanized process from the river beds.
