Upon walking into the dance hall and seeing her, Chicago gangster Marty Snyder immediately falls for Ruth, and works toward being her lover, which he believes he can achieve by opening up singing opportunities for her. Ruth is initially wary of Marty, but makes it clear that she is Love Me or Leave Me interested in him in a romantic sense. Regardless, he does help her professionally, and through his opportunities, which are achieved through intimidation and fear, Ruth does quickly start to gain a name as a singer, which she is able to do because of her talent and despite Marty's intimidation tactics. This becomes an issue in their relationship as she believes he can take her only so far before he becomes a liability, however he will never let her go that easily. The only reason I did watch it was Doris Day. Boy, am I Love Me or Leave Me I did. Anyone who questions Day's acting abilities should take a look at this film. Personally, I've always thought she was one of Hollywood's few singers who really could act. Look at the lackluster acting of Kathryn Grayson or Jane Powell sometime. Doris Day runs circles around them. If you're still in doubt after seeing this film, watch "Julie" sometime. Another one of her best films. Also, Day is in fine voice in this film. All of the songs are Love Me or Leave Me. I have heard the real Ruth Etting's rendition of both these numbers, and they are nothing like Day's performances. Obviously, they Love Me or Leave Me going for mimicry here, but it works fine just the same. Highly recommended. Love Me or Leave Me for some great streaming picks? Doris Day, James Cagney, Love Me or Leave Me () | The Films of Doris Day Already cast as the male lead, Cagney was so convinced that Day had the depth and talent as a singer and actress to Love Me or Leave Me this highly dramatic role that he ceded top billing to her, only the second time since that he had accepted less than top billing. Ruth Etting Dayan aspiring singer working in a ten-cents-a-dance joint. Etting made famous numerous songs now considered standards. InDay was the top female recording artist in the United States and had many hits of her own, so her selection to portray Etting was a logical choice. He is a hot-tempered bully with a lot of contacts in Chicago, and he thinks he can add Ruth to his collection of pick-ups. Ruth is not a pick-up, but she is ambitious and she readily accepts his offer. When Snyder realizes that Ruth is becoming popular, he begins devoting his every waking hour to her career, still hoping that his efforts will yield Love Me or Leave Me she so far has avoided: an intimate relationship with him. He makes deals for her to sing Love Me or Leave Me clubs, gets her to star on her own radio program, and then arranges a contract for her with the Ziegfeld Follies in New York. Afraid of losing control of Ruth to the Ziegfeld professionals, however, Snyder pulls her out of the Follies. When she challenges him in an explosive argument, he rapes her. Defeated emotionally, Ruth marries Snyder and begins achieving even greater successes on the nightclub circuit. Snyder then negotiates a contract for Ruth to make a movie in Hollywood; however, much to his Love Me or Leave Me, her old friend Johnny is the musical director on the picture. Johnny has loved Ruth for years, and she secretly feels the same way about him. After Snyder physically attacks her during a bitter argument, Ruth asks for a divorce. This is a wonderful film, with Day and Cagney giving memorable performances. Both were surefire bets for Academy Award nominations, but ultimately Love Me or Leave Me was not among the five women nominated that year. Even so, she earned almost unanimous praise from critics worldwide and the picture was a huge success. The color cinematography and costumes were first rate, as was the supporting cast. Charles Vidor, who earned a nomination from the Directors Guild of America as best director, delivered an historic film. Doris is genuinely shocked Love Me or Leave Me stays in character. When Mr. Could it possibly have been a publicity stunt? She was now free to make her own choice of films and she was very intrigued with the idea of playing the role of Ruth Etting. Not only that but she had an outstanding producer, director and a very literate script. However, it was the idea of playing opposite Jimmy Cagney that finally convinced her to tackle the role. The film also had a great musical score that also attracted her. One of her biggest pleasures was working with the great musical department at MGM. I prepared for the role by listening to all the Ruth Etting records. She had a quiet way of speaking and singing. It was not my intention to mimic her, but to suggest her style with little inflections and shadings Love Me or Leave Me I picked up from the recordings. She obtained sides of songs that Miss Etting originally waxed when she was the toast of Broadway, and it was from that group of songs that the songs for the film were ultimately selected.

The three performances that I examine are: George M. Cohan’s production of Little Johnny ii Jones (1904), Eleanor Powell’s “Tribute to Bill Robinson” in Honolulu (1939), and Terry- Toons’ cartoon, “The Dancing Shoes” (1949). These performances share an obvious move away from the use of blackface makeup within a minstrel context, and a move towards the masked enjoyment in “black culture” as it contributes to the development of a uniquely American form of entertainment. In bringing these three disparate performances into dialogue I illuminate the many ways in which American entertainment has been built upon an Africanist aesthetic at the same time it has generally disparaged the black body.

Who Was Nan Blakstone? By Barry McCanna More Than Anybody; That's My Weakness Now. She was accompanied by a 6-piece studio orchestra comprising Max Berger, trumpet; Louie Martin, sax; Billy Witkin, violin; Louis Spielman, piano; Dick Cherwin, bass; and Harry Rosenberg, drums. The film soundtrack can be heard at https://soundcloud.com/vitaphone/01-snappy-coeds In February 1930 she appeared in Ruth Selwyn’s unsuccessful musical Nine-Fifteen Revue , which closed within the week and is remembered only because it starred Ruth Etting, who introduced the Harold Arlen & Ted Koehler hit song Get Happy. Later that year Nan featured in the third Gaieties production, which played at the Guild Theatre and ran for 158 performances. A contemporary newspaper photograph of her was captioned “Singing of Nan Blackstone Garrick Gaieties comedienne puts pep into hit at Guild Theatre”. The 1930 US Census listed her as Nan Blakstone, lodging at the Hotel Belvedere, West 48th St, New York. The following year she appeared at the Club Argonaut in New York City with the celebrated Jean Malin, whose speciality was known as a “pansy act”. On 16th June 1931 she recorded two tests for Brunswick, namely Queen Isabell (sic) and Hit or Miss, but nothing came of it. By the end of the year she was in London, but her name does not show up in the record of passenger lists, possibly because she travelled via the Continent (later publicity If the name Nan Blakstone does not register with many jazz for Gala Records claimed that in addition to London she’d collectors, it’s because the lady in question made only two performed also in Paris and Shanghai).

Instead, the industry has, since its formation, sold music to the fans of particular styles, through a variety of changing labels…. In addition the recording industry has employed various legal and illegal, small-scale and team-based, marketing and promotional activities as a way of approaching consumers – practices which might well be labeled as ‘flexible.’ – Keith Negus, “Music Divisions: The Recording Industry and the Social Mediation of Cultural Production,” When the music business gets involved in promoting a style of music, it typically adopts colloquial terms that are verbs or adjectives and turns them into nouns – that is, into things, marketable objects that can be promoted, sold, and bought by a mass audience. – Larry Starr and Christopher Waterman, American Popular Music from Minstrelsy to MTV iv Acknowledgements I have relied on the help of many friends and colleagues in completing this project.

  • Songs of the Ziegfeld Follies
SONGS OF THE ZIEGFELD FOLLIES DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University by Ann Ommen, B.M., M.A. The Ohio State University 2007 Dissertation Committee: Professor Graeme Boone, Adviser Approved by Professor Thomas Postlewait Professor Danielle Fosler-Lussier _________________________ Adviser Graduate Program in Music Copyright by Ann Ommen 2007 ABSTRACT Enormously popular in their own time, the Ziegfeld Follies have become an icon of American popular culture. Produced annually by Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. between 1907 and 1931, these revues were and still are best-known for their lavish production numbers which brought unprecedented attention to members of the chorus. They have served as inspiration for generations of filmmakers, playwrights, and popular authors, but have only been studied by a small number of scholars, primarily those working in cultural studies. For the first time, this dissertation brings a musicological identity to the Follies by examining their songs. It addresses the legends surrounding certain songs so that their performance history can be better understood. It discusses representations of gender, race, and national identity in songs of the Follies, revealing the cultural beliefs Ziegfeld thought would be most acceptable to his largely white, middle-class audiences. It dissects comic song performances to show a specifically musical component to the humor of the Follies. Finally, it analyzes compositional techniques in the lyrics of Gene Buck and in the songs written by Irving Berlin for the Ziegfeld Follies of 1927 , the only Follies production to have been written by a single songwriter.
