ISBN: 978-1-935198-10-9 Page Count: 36 Academic Texts from MARC Publications Spanish & European Accounts Title: History of the Marianas Islands Authors: Luis de Morales, S.J. & Charles Le Gobien, S.J. Edited and commented by: Alexandre Coello de la Rosa Year of Publication: 2016 Cost: $20

Description: Histoire des isles Marianes (History of the Mariana Islands), written in Paris in 1700, provides a detailed glimpse into a tumultuous and critically significant period in the history of the Mariana Islands and the – the period commonly referred to as the Spanish-Chamorro Wars. Using research conducted in several national and international archives in Madrid, Barcelona, Rome, and at the Richard F. Taitano Micronesian Area Research Center in Guam, Alexandre Coello de la Rosa produced this English translation of the first Spanish edition (Madrid, 2013) of the Histoire des isles Marianes (Paris, 1700), by Charles Le Gobien. This present edition stems from a manuscript preserved in the Arxiu de la Companyia de Jesus a Catalunya, in Barcelona, attributed to Father Luis de Morales, who had been part of the Jesuit mission to the Marianas. Thus, this text calls into question the authorship of Father Le Gobien. Not only because the French Jesuit never stepped foot in the Marianas, but also because his Histoire is based on reports, relations and letters written by other fellow Jesuits, among whom was Father Morales. This book opens with a long introduction analyzing the context of production of the Histoire, together with an annotated edition of the book over ten chapters. Finally, it includes short chronologies of the governors of the Marianas correspond- ing to the period between 1668 and 1700, as well as the lists of the Viceroys of New Spain (1664-1701) and the Governors and General Captains of the Philippines (1669-1701).

Editor’s Bio: Alexandre Coello de la Rosa (Barcelona, 1968) received his Ph.D. in History from SUNY at Stony Brook, USA (2001). He is editor-in-chief of the journal Illes i Imperis and is currently doing research at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Department of Humanities. He is a member of the research group Im- peris, Metròpolis i Societats Extraeuropees (GRIMSE) and Ethnographies, Cultural Encounters and Reli- gious Missions in the Iberian World (ECERM) at the same University, as well as an associate member of the Richard F. Taitano Micronesian Area Research Center (MARC) at the University of Guam. He specializes in colonial Latin American history, the ecclesiastical history of Peru and the Philippines, historical anthropolo- gy, and chronicles of the Indies. Some of his recent publications include Jesuits at the Margins: Missions and Missionaries in the Marianas (London & New York: Routledge, 2016) and Elogio a la antropología histórica: enfoques, métodos y aplicaciones al estudio del poder y el colonialismo (Zaragoza: Publicaciones de la Univer- sidad de Zaragoza & UOC, 2016).

The scope of the book includes not just the four brief years of San Vitores’ life on Guam, but another ten years of missionary work following his death. The volume offers a detailed narrative of the early critical years of mission activity between 1668 and 1682 in this earliest of mission fields in Oceania. As a historical source for this period, Garcia’s book is indispensable.

Description: The purpose of this study is to investigate the importance of the Mariana Islands to Spain at the beginning of the 19th century when the Spanish Empire had fallen into decadence and had begun to suffer the loss of its overseas possessions. There is a void in the 19th century literature of the Marianas, a period during which it has been succinctly said the islands were ignored by Spain, yet writers have failed to explain the reasons for the lack of attention or the conditions in the islands at the time. This void is the focus of the study.

Translated, Annotated, and Edited by: Marjorie G. Driver & Omaira Brunal-Perry Year of Publication: 1998 Cost: $20

Description: Over time, the people of the Mariana Islands, the Chamorros, have been subjected to the ravishes of natural disasters, pestilence, war, and myriads of disquieting circumstances. After the arrival of the Spanish missionaries in the islands, such events were recorded, first by the Jesuits (1668-1769), and later by their successors, the Augustinian Recollects (1789-1908). The many Jesuit records have long been available; those of the Augustinians have been conspicuous by their absence. In 1969, an abridged version of a long sought after nineteenth century register, or chronicle, known to have been kept in the Agana parish church was presented to the Micronesian Area Research Center, thereby confirming the survival of at least portions of the parish’s Libro de cosas notables (The Book of Notable Things). For today’s readers, the Chronicle of the Mariana Islands is a treasure-trove of Chamorro nineteenth century memorabilia.

Driver Year of Publication: 2006 Cost: $20

Description: This report written by Governor Francisco Olive contains his insights about the social, political, and economic conditions of the Marianas. He focuses on the underdevelopment of the islands and draws the Spanish Government to look back at the colony’s history, specifically the second half of the 19th century. The report reflects the colonial mentality of Olive, who stresses the responsibility of the Spanish Government to the inhabitants of the Marianas, leaving unchallenged the right of Spain to maintain its sovereignty over the islands.

MARC Educational Series No. 28 ISBN: 1-878453-88-2 Page Count: 235 Title: The Mariana Islands: A Report by Antoine-Alfred Marche, 1887 Author: Antoine-Alfred Marche Year of Publication: 1982 Cost: $7

Description: The purpose of this paper is to translate in its entirety Antoine-Alfred Marche’s report to the Paris museum on his mission to the Mariana Islands. The general report was well written, identifying the geographical locations of the islands and the resources it contained. His analysis of the Chamorros and Carolinians is clearly defined by including both social and political aspects in his in-depth research. The report was based on both his personal observations and information collected from Spanish officials. It is arranged in chronological order and in such a manner that the translator chose to avoid embellishment in order to keep the simplicity and conciseness of the report.

Author Bio: Antoine-Alfred Marche (1844-1898) was a French explorer, ethnographer, and scientist who contributed extensively to Europe’s knowledge of the Philippines and the Marianas- island groups in the Pacific Ocean. His greatest published work, Lucon et Palaouan: six annees de voyage aux Philippines, appeared after his extensive stay there (1879-1881, 1882-1883), and is considered a major scientific study of the Philippines in the 19th century. After Marche’s visit to the Mariana Islands (1887-1889) and his return to France, he was assigned to Tunis as a librarian-archivist in the Department of Commerce and Agriculture. He returned to Paris where he died in 1898.

MARC Publications Series No. 8 ISBN: 1-878453-53-X Page Count: 52 World War II History Title: Tinian and the Bomb: Project Alberta and Operation Centerboard Author: Don A. Farrell Year of Publication: 2018 Cost: $35

Description: Tinian and the Bomb chronicles the important and often overlooked role Tinian in the Mariana Islands played in the atomic bombing of Japan at the end of World War II. As part of the Manhattan Project, Project Alberta and Operation Centerboard, Tinian was integral in the plan to drop atomic bombs on Japan. The book captures this history as gathered from documents and images held in the National Archives, Record Group 77. The book documents how the Army Corps of Engineers, guided by the Los Alamos Laboratory in cooperation with the US Army Air Forces and the US Navy and its Seabees, constructed facilitates on Tinian capable of assembling and delivering as many atomic bombs as necessary to bring WWII to a successful end without an invasion of the Japanese home islands. As predicted, two atomic bombs, one uranium and one plutonium, were launched from Tinian and dropped in rapid succession, resulting in the unconditional surrender of Japanese military forces. This prevented the political partition of Japan (as happened with Korea and Germany) and led to the US-Japan security alliance that remains the cornerstone of peace in the Pacific today.

Author Bio: Don A. Farrell came to Guam from California as a teacher in 1977. He taught at Inarajan Junior High and John F. Kennedy High School.Three years later, in 1980, he switched careers to become a public relations officer for the Guam Legislature. Farrell moved to Tinian in 1987 where he continues to do historical research, write and teach.

Description: In this anthropological study of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis/Parkinsonism-Dementia Complex (ALS/ PDC) in Guam, Keck intertwines three separate perspectives of history, medicine and anthropology.
