Board of Directors meeting at Atlanta University Center Woodruff Library, June 2010 2 BOARD CHAIR LETTER

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the 5th Membership Meeting of the HBCU Library Alliance. This meeting is particularly significant as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the founding of our organization. As noted in our conference theme, the organization has spent the last decade investing in our libraries by “protecting our legacy and preserving our story”. Our activities over the years have reflected our investment and our efforts to support and strengthen our library and, therefore, our institutions. Distinctive activities include:

• Our stellar leadership institutes that have given both seasoned and emerging leaders theoretical and practical instruction and resources, which have improved teaching and learning on our campuses.

• Our collaborations with Cornell University and University of Delaware that have assured our unique documents and photographs detailing the history and cultural heritage of our institutions will be preserved for future generations.

• Documentation and dissemination of the history of our organization that have increased our visibility and ability to secure support for our programs.

Please actively engage in our conference activities celebrating our past, while thinking seriously about the future direction of the organization. On this 10th anniversary, I would like to give “shout-outs” and thanks to our founders, Loretta O’Brien Parham, Janice R. Franklin, Emma Bradford Perry, Elsie Weatherington, the late Tommy Holton and Kate Nevins and LYRASIS, whose vision has brought us to this place and time. I would like to acknowledge the Planning Committee – my co-chair, Cynthia Charles, as well as Dawn Kight, Shatiqua Mosby-Wilson, Emma Bradford Perry, Blanche Sanders, Paula Singleton and Adrienne Webber. The Planning Committee is especially grateful for our central office staff of Sandra Phoenix and Melinda Thomas. This conference would not have been possible without their outstanding dedication and effort.

The Alliance was prevented from holding the 2006 membership meeting in New Orleans as a result of Hurricane Katrina. We are finally here to enjoy beautiful New Orleans, home to several of our institutions. Let’s agree to not only work hard, but to also play hard during our time here.

Here’s to a great meeting,

Mary Jo Fayoyin Chair, HBCU Library Alliance 2012 Membership Meeting Chair Director of Library Services Savannah State University (GA)

Membership Meeting Planning Committee members Dawn Kight and Emma Bradford Perry, Southern University and A&M College, Baton Rouge (LA)

4 EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR LETTER

It is with great pride that I welcome you to the HBCU Library Alliance Fifth Membership Meeting! How exciting it is that we are here in New Orleans, a city known for its rich variety of cultures and traditions. We hope you will find inspiration in this meeting as we reflect upon and celebrate our accomplishments and consider the future directions of our unique organization. Ten years ago, and for the first time in history, more than 100 library deans and directors came together to discuss strategies to create an organization to strengthen HBCU libraries. We have made great advances in our community, and our meeting’s theme, “Protecting our Legacy, Preserving our Story: A Decade of Investment in HBCU Libraries,” highlights the significant role of the HBCU Library Alliance over the past decade.

This membership meeting will have a structure similar to the 2002 inaugural meeting. It’s time for our community to work together to explore and design a strategy to support the next decade of service to member institutions. Dr. Consuella Askew will facilitate a discussion on the “Future Directions of the HBCU Library Alliance.” Your participation is vital as we begin these critical conversations.

Major kudos to Mary Jo Fayoyin, Cynthia Charles and their team for an agenda designed to evoke conversation and create partnerships. A most gracious “thank you” is due to my administrative assistant, Melinda Thomas, for her commitment and continued support of the Alliance’s activities.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is sponsoring a preconference on Sunday, “Using Effective Advocacy and Fundraising to Preserve HBCUs Rich Photographic Legacy.” HBCU partners and project consultants will share their knowledge and experiences as they work together to preserve photographic collections documenting our history and culture. Join me as we increase our awareness of the important photographic resources in our collections.

Monday evening’s inaugural fundraising dinner is not to be missed. Thanks are in order to Stuart Grinnell of Ambassador Books for supporting this activity. I look forward to celebrating our accomplishments and dining with you at the Oceana Restaurant.

My goal is for you to be encouraged to make a greater commitment to the HBCU Library Alliance. The Membership Meeting will provide you an opportunity to participate in important discussions related to the future of our organization. Please come prepared to reflect, celebrate and work together to advance the HBCU Library Alliance.

I look forward to seeing you.

Respectfully,

Sandra Phoenix, Executive Director HBCU Library Alliance

Loretta Parham, Founding Board Chair Sandra Phoenix, Executive Director Mary Jo Fayoyin, Board Chair
