Research is now showing that children and adults can experience race-based trauma, which can have profound effects on psychological and physical well-being, and can also impact communities as a whole. The threat and experience of police brutality and discrimination can be experienced individually or vicariously, and traumatic symptoms can vary depending on the individual. Children are especially vulnerable to the psychological and physical effects of police brutality and the threat thereof because of their developmental stages. Definitions and prevalence of police brutality will be discussed, as well as race based trauma, the effects of this trauma, and the impact on communities as a whole. Police Brutality Definitions Ambiguity surrounds the discussion on police brutality, leaving it difficult for many to establish what it actually is. For the purpose of this paper, police brutality is defined as, “a civil rights violation that occurs when a police officer acts with excessive force by using an amount of force with regards to a civilian that is more than necessary” (U.S. -

SYSTEMIC RACISM, POLICE BRUTALITY OF BLACK PEOPLE, AND THE USE OF VIOLENCE IN QUELLING PEACEFUL PROTESTS IN AMERICA WILLIAMS C. IHEME* “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” —Martin Luther King Jr Abstract: The Trump Administration and its mantra to ‘Make America Great Again’ has been calibrated with racism and severe oppression against Black people in America who still bear the deep marks of slavery. After the official abolition of slavery in the second half of the nineteenth century, the initial inability of Black people to own land, coupled with the various Jim Crow laws rendered the acquired freedom nearly insignificant in the face of poverty and hopelessness. Although the age-long struggles for civil rights and equal treatments have caused the acquisition of more black-letter rights, the systemic racism that still perverts the American justice system has largely disabled these rights: the result is that Black people continue to exist at the periphery of American economy and politics. Using a functional approach and other types of approach to legal and sociological reasoning, this article examines the supportive roles of Corporate America, Mainstream Media, and White Supremacists in winnowing the systemic oppression that manifests largely through police brutality. The article argues that some of the sustainable solutions against these injustices must be tackled from the roots and not through window-dressing legislation, which often harbor the narrow interests of Corporate America. INTRODUCTION The town of Ferguson, Missouri, captured national attention when a grand jury failed to indict Darren Wilson, a white police officer who shot and killed Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, three months prior.' Simi- lar citizen deaths involving police in both New York City and Cleveland have magnified the tensions felt across the country, and in many cities and com- munities, the community-police relationships are rapidly becoming untena- 2 ble. Baltimore, Maryland, is a prime example; protests, riots, and an atmos- phere of mistrust pervaded the city for months after the deaths of Michael 3 Brown, Eric Garner, and Tamir Rice. The situation was, simply put, a pow- der keg waiting to explode. Our traditional justice system is simply not adequately responding to all of the issues currently confronting society. A new strategy needs to be put into place, and quickly. -

Fight, Flight or Lockdown: Dorn & Satterly 1 Fight, Flight or Lockdown - Teaching Students and Staff to Attack Active Shooters could Result in Decreased Casualties or Needless Deaths By Michael S. Dorn and Stephen Satterly, Jr., Safe Havens International. Since the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007, there has been considerable interest in an alternative approach to the traditional lockdown for campus shooting situations. These efforts have focused on incidents defined by the United States Department of Education and the United States Secret Service as targeted acts of violence which are also commonly referred to as active shooter situations. This interest has been driven by a variety of factors including: • Incidents where victims were trapped by an active shooter • A lack of lockable doors for many classrooms in institutions of higher learning. • The successful use of distraction techniques by law enforcement and military tactical personnel. • A desire to see if improvements can be made on established approaches. • Learning spaces in many campus buildings that do not offer suitable lockable areas for the number of students and staff normally in the area. We think that the discussion of this topic and these challenges is generally a healthy one. New approaches that involve students and staff being trained to attack active shooters have been developed and have been taught in grades ranging from kindergarten to post secondary level. There are however, concerns about these approaches that have not, thus far, been satisfactorily addressed resulting in a hot debate about these concepts. We feel that caution and further development of these concepts is prudent. Developing trend in active shooter response training The relatively new trend in the area of planning and training for active shooter response for K-20 schools has been implemented in schools. -

CHICAGO PREMIERE by JAMES IJAMES directed by WARDELL JULIUS CLARK LOBBY EXPERIENCE SAY THEIR NAMES The 137 names on this wall represent the “List of the Fallen” a remembrance of Black people living in the United States who have been killed by police or other law enforcement officers in the past 20 years. In Kill Move Paradise, Isa reads these names from an ever-expanding list, one spit out from a printer, one name at a time, growing longer and longer over the course of the play. The people on this wall—sons and daughters, parents and grandparents, educators and scholars, athletes and artists, senior citizens and children—are by no means a complete documentation of the deaths of Black people at the hands of police officers over the course of the past two decades. In fact, according to a Washington Post-curated police-shooting database that records and analyze every fatal shooting by an on-duty police officer in the United States, in 2019 alone, at least 235 Black people lost their lives due to this type of systemic violence at the hands of the police. Rather than paint a complete picture, these names represent just a small sampling of the loss of Black life, meant to remind us of the vastness of this epidemic. The List of the Fallen was initially crafted by playwright James Ijames while writing the play, and, with his encouragement, added to by the production team during the rehearsal process in an attempt to reflect the continued violence experienced by Black bodies since the publishing of the script. -

They did so as an extension of ongoing protests against both the plans to establish a private police force at the University and in opposition to the University’s contracts with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). -

INTRODUCTION Since the civil unrest following the death of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old Black1 man who suffered a spinal cord injury and died in police custody, many—including political pundits, politicians, and residents—have debated about what went wrong in Baltimore. While some commentators believe the unrest was solely in response to “police mistreatment of black men,”2 some have opined that the unrest was a product of pent up frustration caused by “crushing poverty, lack of opportunity,”3 and the denial, to Black youth in Baltimore, of “the opportunity to participate in mainstream American society.”4 This Comment argues that the aforementioned issues are a byproduct of racist government-sanctioned policies that continue to perpetuate racial and economic segregation and concentrated poverty in Black communities. -
