GROSS: Good afternoon. I'm Samantha Gross. I'm fellow and director in the Brookings Institution's Energy Security and Climate Initiative. And I'm really happy to welcome all the youth to our panel this afternoon talking about how the U.S. election will impact U.S. engagement on climate change. Right now, we're less than three weeks away from one of the most consequential elections, certainly, in my life, probably in your life too. And particularly because of the diametrically opposed views of the two candidates on climate change. There's so much to talk about and I'm really grateful today to have a very varied and interesting panel today. The wide variety of experiences and expertise. I have two journalists, I have a young activist and then I have three of our own from here at Brookings.

  • Record Dreams Catalog
RECORD DREAMS 50 Hallucinations and Visions of Rare and Strange Vinyl Vinyl, to: vb. A neologism that describes the process of immersing yourself in an antique playback format, often to the point of obsession - i.e. I’m going to vinyl at Utrecht, I may be gone a long time. Or: I vinyled so hard that my bank balance has gone up the wazoo. The end result of vinyling is a record collection, which is defned as a bad idea (hoarding, duplicating, upgrading) often turned into a good idea (a saleable archive). If you’re reading this, you’ve gone down the rabbit hole like the rest of us. What is record collecting? Is it a doomed yet psychologically powerful wish to recapture that frst thrill of adolescent recognition or is it a quite understandable impulse to preserve and enjoy totemic artefacts from the frst - perhaps the only - great age of a truly mass art form, a mass youth culture? Fingering a particularly juicy 45 by the Stooges, Sweet or Sylvester, you could be forgiven for answering: fuck it, let’s boogie! But, you know, you’re here and so are we so, to quote Double Dee and Steinski, what does it all mean? Are you looking for - to take a few possibles - Kate Bush picture discs, early 80s Japanese synth on the Vanity label, European Led Zeppelin 45’s (because of course they did not deign to release singles in the UK), or vastly overpriced and not so good druggy LPs from the psychedelic fatso’s stall (Rainbow Ffolly, we salute you)? Or are you just drifting, browsing, going where the mood and the vinyl takes you? That’s where Utrecht scores.

  • Speech Given by Don Mei at a Chinese New Year
THE TRANSFORMATIONAL POWER OF THE POSITIVE MIND SPEECH GIVEN BY DON-LI MEI AT A CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION (1st February 2014) AND MEMORIAL FOR PROFESSOR MAN FONG MEI When I was little boy my father handed me and my sister a little red book much like Mao’s famous booklet of doctrines. My father said that it was to record his personal wisdom, which as you are all I am sure aware, he was always very willing to share with anyone who would listen. The first ever thing we ever wrote in that book was POSITIVE THINKING or PT and this became somewhat of a mantra for our family, whenever we faced a challenge. Before running off nervously for my first school exams I would hear ‘PT’ yelled at me from the car window. When I was going through my more moody teenage years all dressed in black, my father would grab me by the shoulders and force me to even fake a smile before he would let me go. Whenever anyone in the family was going through any difficulty we would go to him because we knew that he would make you feel lighter simply by showing us the positives of even the most stressful situations. My father truly believed in the transformational power of a positive mind. He believed that positive thinking made barriers lower, difficulties easier and brought luck and inspiration. His booming, unrepressed laughter and beaming smile is probably a powerful, lasting memory for all of you. This was always genuine. He had an awe-inspiring ability to allow any problems to slip away whenever he chose to stop and enjoy the moment.

  • Here Are Things I Needed to Say.” the Album Was Released in the U.S
BURT BACHARACH Biography Six decades into one of songwriting’s most successful and honored careers – marked by 48 Top 10 hits, nine #1 songs, more than 500 compositions and a landmark 49-year run on the charts, Burt Bacharach’s music continues to set industry records and creative standards. “At This Time,” his 2005 album, which won the Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album, breaks new ground with Bacharach’s first-ever lyrical collaborations, supplementing the melodies which reflect the pioneering Bacharach sound. He says it is the “most-passionate album” of his career as “At This Time” marks the first time Bacharach takes on social and political issues in his music. Bacharach’s global audiences span several generations, and he is viewed as the unique combination of one of the greatest composers of all time and the ultra-cool cult hero of the contemporary music set who often has several songs on various music charts in many countries simultaneously. His many concerts are SRO, as he tours the United States and the world conducting orchestras and with his own musicians and singers performing his music. Along with Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Paul McCartney and Paul Simon, Bacharach is a legend of popular music. A recipient of three Academy Awards and seven Grammy Awards (including the 1997 Trustees Award with collaborator Hal David), he revolutionized the music of the 1950s and 60s and is regularly bracketed with legendary names, ranging from Cole Porter, to Sir George Martin, as one of a handful of visionaries who pioneered new forms of music from the second half of the 20th Century and into the 21st Century.
