However, playing at this level relies on commitment as well as talent. If you feel you would like to be considered or if you feel you or your parents cannot make this commitment, please speak to your manager. Highest batting average min. 5 innings/Lowest bowling average min. 10 overs. Because young players play so few matches we don’t insist on 5 ‘completed’ innings before they qualify with an average. This is not the case in senior cricket. Please note that a more accurate picture of performance can be gained the more overs bowled or the more innings batted. A low minimum has been chosen to involve as many players as possible in the statistics. Overall batting and bowling awards are made by managers in consultation with coaches and others. There are no definitive criteria. Club caps awarded to any established Academy player taking 5 wickets in one match (including 5 stumpings and/or catches by a wicket keeper), scoring a century, playing at County level or being a first choice selection for the senior SWCC teams or village teams with whom SWCC have a formal arrangement. From 2009 Club caps will be awarded to girls for taking 3 wicket/catches, scoring 50 in a match and for County or adult selection. Players’ Player may be awarded on the basis of Player of the Match nominations over the course of a season or a vote amongst other squad members. Academy records have been compiled since 2003. There may well be superior performances before that – just let us know. The Alfred Adams Batting Award. Alfred Adams scored 279 not out by batting all day against Bishop’s Stortford for SWCC on the Common on 11 July 1837. At the time it was the highest recorded individual score in the country. Fiona Harris was the first woman to play competitively for SWCC in 2002. She still plays for SWCC when she can. John Smith first played for SWCC in 1946 and retired in 1963 at the age of 35. He is the tallest of the team in many of the clubhouse photos of the 1950s and 60s. John passed away in 2009 Josh Bysouth was an u13 Academy player when he died in a car accident with his Grandfather in 2012 The Ron Muggeridge Academician of the Year is awarded to the academy player who has made the strongest commitment to his or her own development and to the work of the Academy and Club. It may be related to the “Clubman of the Year” award for each age group. Steve Jones Spirit of Cricket Award (introduced 2019) to reflect the Laws of the Game and the values of Saffron Walden Cricket Club. Named after former Vice President and MCC member, Steve Jones. The Club wants to recognise Academy members who demonstrate the Spirit of Cricket in their behaviours, as well as those who help to win games. We were therefore very pleased to announce a new award in 2019: the Steve Jones Spirit of Cricket Award. This award recognises the Academy member, of any age, gender or ability, who is considered to have demonstrated best the behaviours of sportsmanship, respect, encouragement and responsibility. Rajapack Awards Jack Petchey Awards were given for outstanding personal achievement 2006-2015. The club withdrew from the scheme in 2015 – it did not recognise youngsters under the age of 11 and the criteria for awards became unduly restrictive. It has been replaced with the Rajapack Award Scheme sponsored by Rajapack (www.rajapack.co.uk). The club will receive £100 for every century, 3 catches and 5 wickets in a single match in senior cricket from u16 upwards. We will also receive £100 for every 50 and 5fer and 3 catches in junior T20 cricket and similarly £100 for every 30, 3 wickets and 2 catches in girls and Crocus cricket. In junior T20 matches played with a “retire after 30 runs” rule, then a Rajapack award goes to players getting 30 runs in each of two matches We currently do not issue individual medals or trophies, preferring to issue certificates. This maximises involvement and keeps costs low. However, sponsors for individual trophies shown on the previous page are always welcome. Trevor Edward Bailey , CBE ( December 3, 1923 - February 10, 2011 ) was an English test cricketer , cricket writer and radio commentator. Bailey was an all-rounder with a solid, if unspectacular stroke technique. His extremely defensive style of play earned him the nickname "Barnacle Bailey". According to the subsequently created player world rankings, he was nevertheless the best all-rounder in the world for most of his international career. In his later life, Bailey wrote numerous cricket books and was best known as a member of the commentator team on the BBC 's live radio show Test Match Special , for which he worked for 26 years. contents. Early years. Bailey was born in Westcliff-on-Sea , Essex . His father was an officer in the Admiralty . He attended Alleyn Court Prep School and learned the game of cricket from Denys Wilcox , the former captain of the Essex County Cricket Club , before moving to Dulwich College . In his first year, when he was only 14, he played for the school's first team. He topped his school's rankings for the Batting Average and Bowling Average in 1939 and 1940, and became the school team captain in 1941. In 1942, in his final year at school, he again topped both lists. After graduating from school, he served with the Royal Marines and returned to Alleyn Court Prep School as a teacher after his release in early January 1945. At St John's College, Cambridge , he studied for two years and graduated there in 1948.

Firstly we hear some responses regarding the big story that’s got the whole village talking; the proposed new development just behind Gravelye Lane by Wates. Both the Rural Parish Council (on page 34) and Lindfield Preservation Society (page 21)make their own comments on it. This story broke after we had gone to press last month. We are also privileged to hear the stories of Alan Hill and Chris & Jo White. Many will know Chris & Jo as the gregarious owners of Limes Bistro on the High Street. In January they sold the business and so we took the opportunity to catch up with what’s on the cards for them now. Read the full story on page 10. Claire Cooper met Alan Hill and talked to him about his new book - and the extensive back catalogue of other titles authored by him - on page 20. The Pakistani captain persuaded two of his bowlers to bowl illegitimate deliveries at precise times of the match while he batted out a specific over without scoring a run. Ross Perry presents an analysis of Australia's fi rst 16-Test winning streak from October 1999 to March 2001. A future issue of The Yorker will cover their second run of 16 Test victories. We note that part two of Trevor Ruddell's article detailing the development of the rules of Australian football has been delayed until our next issue, which is due around Easter 2010. I played the game in Elementary and Secondary School, and represented The Leeward Islands’ Teachers’ Training College on its cricket team in contests against various clubs from 1964 to 1966. My playing days ended after I moved away from St Catharines, Ontario, Canada, where I represented Ridley Cricket Club against teams as distant as 100 miles away. The faculty at the University of Texas at Arlington has been a source of inspiration to me during my tenure there. Alusine Jalloh, my Dissertation Committee Chairman, challenged me to look beyond my pre-set Master’s Degree horizon during our initial conversation in 2000. He has been inspirational, conscientious and instructive; qualities that helped set a pattern for my own discipline. I am particularly indebted to him for his unwavering support which was indispensable to the inclusion of a chapter, which I authored, in The United States and West Africa: Interactions and Relations , which was published in 2008; and I am very grateful to Stephen Reinhardt for suggesting the sport of cricket as an area of study for my dissertation.

NEW ZEALAND – BLACK CAPS – 2018/19 & ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP 2019 The Club was honoured to have two members selected to represent New Zealand in the past 12 months. WER (WILL) SOMERVILLE and LH (LOCKIE) FERGUSON Will and Lockie – both bowling for Parnell Will, a dream Test debut 7/127 (4/75 & 3/52) and Test won Lockie, 21 wickets at 19.47 in the ICC CWC And Lockie selected for the WORLD XI, ICC CWC 2019 WILL SOMERVILLE Born in 1984, Will, an off spinner, made his 1st Class debut for Otago in 2004/05 for whom he represented till 2007/08. Then, whilst in Sydney, for NSW from 2014 to 2018. Will returned to NZ later last year, accepted a contract with ACA and joined Parnell. Selected for the Black Caps’ series vs Pakistan in the UAE in December, he took, in the 3rd Test on debut, 7/127 (4/75 and 3/52). This enabled NZ to win the Test by 123 runs and so take out the series. Will’s apparences for Parnell were limited but he did well for Auckland and was awarded Cricketer of the Year – the John Bentham Morris Memorial Trophy, the first Parnell player to be so honoured since Ross Morgan in 1978/79.
