Well, it's now over six months that I have been in the 'top job' and I'll get straight to the point and say that it has been a frustrating time thus far. I believe that you elected an excellent group of people to assist with running the club, but unfortunately many of you are not supporting the committee when you don't show up to events. This year is the 45th birthday of our beloved vehicle (the most popular Holden ever made) and we are fortunate that four major events (Whiteman Park, Brookton OTMS, Waroona and GM Owners’ Day) will be held this year. The organizers of Waroona have made a great trophy for us as it is an anniversary year and I will be disappointed if we as a club don't repay them by having a large display there this year. At the AGM we discussed the issue of Concession 404 vehicles and the attendance at club runs. The feeling from the floor was that these members may be taking advantage of the club to receive Concession 404. It was agreed that a mandatory number of runs (4), similar to that of the WAHolden Car Club, be introduced. The Committee has decided that Whiteman Park, Waroona, Donkin's / Ward's farm stays and the Christmas function are the four events that those members with concession 404 licenced must attend. Obviously if the vehicle is under restoration this may not be possible. FYI I will have my Prem wagon on Concession 404 this year so the above affects me as well. Another item to think about is the issue of EJ . I say this as we get a large number of enquires from EJ owners wishing to join the club. I have no issue with them being members and participating in club runs as it helps swell numbers and bring in much needed revenue. Speaking of new members it is pleasing to see that we are attracting an average of 6 a month. A warm welcome to you allfrom the Committee . In this issue you will see an update for theASR 2009. It seems that we are failing to support this event as the nominations from WAare quite low. Get onto Neil, send him a $100 to make sure you don't miss out on one of the biggest gatherings of EH ever seen in WA! Www.ehcarclubwa.org.au Finally, it was a sad day for me last month when the blue car went to a proud new owner who lives in Goomalling. We didn't want to sell her but when you have a , a ute, a panel , a wagon and a Monaro, the shed gets a bit full (those who attended the 'what's in ya shed night would know). I do however have Mitch O'Brien's comments a few years back ringing in my ears, that you will regret selling an EH. Finally the guys at Rex Spares in Osborne Park have been in my ear to push the free club banner. It was mentioned in the last newsletter but I'll do it again. Please purchase your replacement parts from Rex and inform them that you are a member of the club to get a 10% discount as well as assist us. Vera Nolan THE Goss

Well is another year has flow by and the EH is now 45. The newsletter in its current form is 7 years old and the pages are getting harder to fill each time. The results of our survey showed that only 1 club member checks the web page for information about club runs. FYI the EHs by the lake run in January had a piss poor turn out. Committee member Emma had done a great job in securing a prime location for the club with a cordoned off car park at Lake Leschenaultia. What a great place for a Sunday BBQ. Cool water and a pontoon to do bombies off of! Ex President andASR co-organizer, Bob Hurrell has been sprung purchasing a Subaru as his Manly run a bout. This is his second misdemeanor as he rolled up to the Christmas party in a Commodore wagon! Sydney based artist Keith Pulver got in contact with us re his large range of Collectable Mugs, featuring early modelAussie Cars, Muscle Cars and Hotrods Each mug is made in Australia (that's rare in itself) and individually hand printed featuring a hand drawn sketch, the reverse side of the mug features the Holden logo. Check out www.mrmugs.com.au for more info. Holden has begun drip-feeding details of its eagerly-awaited Sportwagon. Yet there is still no clue to a release date. To keep the pot boiling GM Holden announced this week that there will be seven models of the sleek wagon with the choice of three engines a pair of V6s and a V8. Anyone with a lazy 55K can get themselves a CandyApple Red Prem Sedan. The car is a show car that can be driven if you wish. The car has taken 19 yrs to restore. It has a full bare metal respray top and bottom. Every nut and bolt on the car is brand new. It seems that the Fremantle Motor Museum has been given marching orders from the B shed. Word has it that the chick in charge of the PortAuthority doesn't like the old girls and wants them gone. As this is a private collection, and part of the York Museum the search is one for a suitable home. Midland rail yards have been mentioned as a possible home. Www.ehasr.org.au Perth's own Cruizin is Australia's original and longest running TV show of it's kind catering for enthusiasts of hot rods, customs, American cars, classics, muscle cars and street machines now going into the 9th year of production. Cruizin was first broadcast on Access 31 Television in Perth, Western Australia in 1999 and has now spread to all UHF 31 stations around Australia and also more recently into New Zealand via Triangle Television The Charger Club of WAis organising a track day at Wanneroo Raceway and would like to extend an invitation to us It is getting harder to organise an event at Wanneroo with the constant rising of costs associated to it and so they are endeavouring to get many clubs on board in order to minimise the cost for the day. The cost of the day around $100, some safety gear will be required your vehicles will be scrutineered by CAMS. Lastly 7 new members are on the books and bring with them 3 utes, 2 ,a Special sedan and a Prem sedan. Ed MAIL BAG The club gets heaps of mail and we have published just some. All mail received by the club is answered. The club does not necessarily endorse point of views expressed in these letters. If you would like to publish your letter or opinions in this newsletter please send in your mail. Hi Vera,

I was recently browsing your EH Holden club website and noticed that there are some cars advertised in your classified.

I am a first time buyer, looking for an original sedan or that runs well, is less than $7,000, and does not need much work.

Do you have any advice of things that I should be aware of when I am looking for my dream EH? Also, is there a course I can do on basic mechanics that would help me understand my carb better (or even a book on EH Holdens?).

Would be great to get some advice, and let me know if you have any ideas for cars that may be a good investment.

Cheers, 6112 .A.

Ben Plunkett

John,

I have just come across your website while researching EH Holden's online, I pick up a 1965 EH premier wagon tomorrow morning, ($1500) and in need of restoration, I would like to become a member of the WA EH owners club, and tap into your expertise while sourcing the parts etc, to complete my restoration, I will download a membership form and send it in and if you could e-mail me an any upcoming events I could attend to meet some enthusiasts it would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

PO Box 2159 Seville Grove W I own an EJ Holden and I am seeking someone/business that does rust repair. I have been unsuccesful so far in locating a business or person that will cut some rust out of my vehicle.

Chris

Hello Vera I have a 63 EJ Wagon that needs some work and was hoping you could point me in the right direction. It needs some rust removal, paint job and some interior work.

I bought the car 12 years ago when I was 17 and am getting married next year and wanted to have it as one of the wedding cars, along with hiring another one or two for the day, any help you can give me would be appreciated. Regards,

Big donk MOST MODERN ENGINE PLANT IN THE WORLD The new Holden engines are produced in the most modern engine assembly plant in the world. A complete motor comes off the assembly line every 1½ minutes. A giant showpiece of the automotive industry, the; entire engine assembly, testing, and processing of engine components are housed in one plant of 292,500 square feet. To construct and equip with the very latest machines, this plant cost a litt1e over £11 million. The new plant features certain manufacturing techniques and equipment never before seen in Australia Construction work~ supervised by GMH engineers, was carried out by Australian contractors, and GMH engineers also designed the entire plant layout of the intricate manufacturing operations. In this big, spacious plant, Holden engine components are machined, assembled, tested and I packed in an atmosphere or cleanliness, complete worker safety, and the highest degree of efficiency. All engine components, such as crankshafts, pistons, camshafts, cylinder blocks and heads, flywheels etc., are fed by electronically controlled conveyors to a central 3,144 feet long conveyor which forms part of the engine assembly line. There is a continuous flow of engine components through the various machining stations after which they are matched in sets with other parts, then carried direct to Www.ehcarclub.org.au the required assembly station on the engine line. The speed at which raw materials are processed through to finished components and into engine assembly and test is such that the total time could be less than one day. The long "L-shaped engine~ assembly line is the most mechanised in Australia and comprises four inter-connected conveyors, delivery, assembly, test and return, which move the engines on 400 Jay hooks through electronically controlled stations in a slow procession from the first assembly operation to the boxing area. This engine assembly line, in common with the other lines in this modern plant, has been designed to make the job easier, safer, and more comfortable for the operators. Along the line there are emergency loop circuits. Any engine requiring special attention is shunted off the main line for adjustment. In the testing section, the completed engine continues to move on the main conveyor until an electronic device directs it to a stand that is vacant. On the test stands, where the engine remains suspended on a jay hook, oil and water hoses are attached and the engine is started and runs under its own power for final adjustment. Here again if any engine requires specia1 adjustment, it is switched by the conveyor down the line to an area for specialised attention. In THE machine shop proper there are rows of the most modern transfer machines in the world-a1l especially tooled for the new Holden engines. One transfer machine, on the cylinder head line, contains 63 operating stations to cover the milling, drilling, counterboring, reaming and tapping operations, including the automatic installation of hydraulic valve lifters. Many of these special machines are electronically connected to tool boards which signal the need for tool replacements. Each replacement tool is mounted and set to a clock meter which automatica1ly switches off a section of a machine when the tool reaches its work limit and a red signal light glows on the board. The section of the machine concerned cannot operate again until a new tool is set in the machine and a new replacement tool mounted on the board and the clock meter reset. Machines used for the production of cast iron components are equipped with an elaborate exhaust system for the disposal or swarf and the vapours of oil mist lubrication. The oil vapour system of bearing lubrication is relatively new to Australia. Oil is vaporised at a central point and piped to respective bearings and the big machines' gear boxes. All machines are controlled by master control consoles which are equipped with rows of indicator lights to record the working cycle of each operating station. A breakdown or malfunctioning in any section is immediately indicated on the control panel and the defective section automatica11y switched out of operation. The overhead network or conveyor tracks throughout the plant is electronically controlled and electronic eyes watch the parts flow for a traffic build-up. If this occurs, the parts are automatically switched to an adjacent track further down the line.

Www.ehcarclub.org.au DID YA KNOW?

Your Holden, if it was delivered from a W.A. Dealer would have gone through the following processes.

The main Body shells were made in South Australia, at the Woodville Plant, where the doors were fitted and painted, the interior trim was also fitted to the vehicle shell, as well as the Boot lid. This means that the car was now in what's called "Assembly Knockdown State", and ready to be loaded onto a flat top rail wagon, for Interstate delivery. These bodies were now on their way to the G M H Assembly P1ant at Mosman Park, Western Australia. They would arrive at the Cottesloe Freight Yards and then later put down at Leighton, yes it was nearly on the waters edge of the Ocean. They would be there in rows, just as they had come off the trains G M H Mosman Park employed up to 350 people in the 1960's and this is where the bodies were completed. The body shells were put on trolleys and chained together in a line. Two men worked either side and one down in the pit underneath, this was known as the top end Assembly Line. The first to be fitted was the wiring, then the front ends, rear axles and springs followed by the motors and gear-boxes and other Mechanical components. All these components, engines, panels, etc. were sent to the plant in large pine boxes and the items packed in lots of 20

The vehicle then moved to the Sheetmetal section, where the bolt-on components such as guards, bonnets, valance panels, wheels and bumpers were fitted and painted at Mosman Park. Apparently the old spray booth is now at Coote Motors in Brookton.

Special orders such as white roofs were also attended to at Mosman Park. Most W.A. cars had white roofs, as in the East it was not as common. Nine cars per hour was the best achievement on the assembly line, and the completion of seven was normal in an hour. The HQ model was the last to be assembled at the Plant and it closed in 1972 Www.ehcarclubwa.org.au

The cars were then put in the holding yard ready for delivery to the Dealers. There was always long waits for Holdens and orders had to be in for months ahead. The Dealers would have to check the cars for imperfections before taking delivery, as there were no comebacks.

Most were driven to the Dealers and in the case of Country Dealers, 30 MPH was the limit for running in a new car. Dealers then re-packed wheel bearings, adjusted tappets and head bolts, and also brakes, gave it a grease up and polish, fitted any NASCO extras. The car was now ready for delivery, and in the case of the EH model to a proud owner LIST PRICE

Whilst flicking through some old magazines I came across the EH price list and I thought that it may be of interest. The prices below were not to be released until 10am on August 26th 1963. On February 14, 1966, a decimal currency, the dollar, was introduced after years of planning. February 2, 1963 had been initially planned as the date the new currency would be introduced but this date passed with no fanfare as no progress on developing the new currency had been made at that time. The exchange rate was 1 pound = 2 dollars. Thus, 10 shillings became 1 dollar and 1 shilling became 10 cents

The Cover Girl Santa and his helpers (L-RMichaela, Amber, Jaimee and Rosie ) are seen relaxing on the President’s new ride, a Roebuck Pearl Premier Station Sedan before spreading some HO HO HO cheer to the club members that attended the 2007 Christmas wind up. XMAS 07

The club Christmas party was held at yet another out door venue, this time Garvey Park, and I think we have found the spot. Plenty of shade, free BBQs, clean toilets, a café and the beautiful Swan River. I think that this is the venue for now on as there was plenty of room on the grassed area for the vehicles to be parked. The day didn't start out too flash with the Weather Gods giving Perth a much needed sprinkle of rain to wash the dust away. This however did not deter the harden club run regulars for turning up to share some Christmas cheer. Bob H had made the trip over from 'the other side' and must have lost his keys to the EH as he rolled up in a regular car. It didn't take long for the bagging to begin and he quickly set off back home to remedy the situation. Being EH owners we had come prepared and the marquee was soon erected over the electric BBQs. There were some discussions as to whether the chops and snags would get some melted toppings. Afew cold beers were had and a game of park cricket also took place. There was no record of a hundred being hit, but a few bounces from Club Registrar, Ray to Santa was noticed. Santa recovered from the body line incident and handed out lollies to all ably assisted by his helpers (see cover) Michaela,Amber, Jaimee and Rosie.
