This year, we are proud to recognize Ken Jeong, actor, comedian, producer and physician. He is one of the most prominent and widely recognized Korean American entertainers and has become a strong advocate for healthcare access after his wife’s battle with cancer. We are also incredibly privileged to welcome H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, as tonight’s Keynote Speaker. The Secretary-General is a distinguished man of service, who serves our international communities with boldness and compassion. His exemplary leadership and contributions to our world truly inspires us, and we look forward to hearing from him.

Our Gala tonight is possible through the collective efforts of many individuals, including our Board of Directors, staff and the members of the 2015 Gala Benefit Committee. 2 KOREAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Welcome from the President & Executive Director On behalf of the Korean American Community Foundation, we welcome you to our Annual Gala!

Since KACF was founded in 2002, we have awarded 245 grants totaling more than $4.7 million to support 62 non- profit organizations that are in the frontlines addressing the most pressing needs in our communities. We are often the first source of institutional funding, particularly for Korean nonprofit organizations that provide critical services with cultural and language competence, and KACF has become an important grantmaker in the Korean American community. Your investment in KACF has allowed us the privilege of working with our grantee partners which has had a positive impact on the lives of thousands of individuals.

In addition to being a grantmaker, the Foundation plays a significant role in raising the visibility of our community to the broader nonprofit sector, harnessing the growing philan- thropic power of Korean Americans to find solutions for social challenges, and strengthening nonprofits so they can be more effective in their work.

Tonight’s success would not have been possible without the dedication of many individuals, especially the entire Gala leadership. Particularly, we thank and acknowledge this year’s Gala Co-Chairs, Michael Chung and Alex Chi, for their outstanding efforts and accomplishments.

Thank you again for being a part of this remarkable evening and for partnering with KACF to empower, strengthen and transform our communities!

Sincerely,

James Wohn Kyung B. Yoon President Executive Director

The goal was to address the challenges in the community by raising funds for organizations on the front lines of serving under-resourced individuals and families, while also mobilizing Korean Americans to embrace a culture of giving.

In December of 2002, the Foundation was incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and in 2003, awarded our first grants totaling $60,000 to five nonprofit organizations. Since then, KACF has grown to become a trusted source of philanthropy within the Korean and Asian American communities. To date, the Foundation has given more than $4.7 million in grants to nonprofit organizations working to empower the lives of individuals, strengthen families and transform communities.

16 KOREAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY FOUNDATION KACF San Francisco KACF is recognized as a model for ethnic-based philanthropy in immigrant communities, and over the years, Korean American leaders in cities across the country have sought out the Founda- tion’s expertise in replicating this success in their own communities.

In 2013, a group of Korean American professionals in San Fran- cisco approached KACF with a desire to bring the KACF model to their city. With a clear business plan, KACF-SF demonstrated their strong leadership and capacity to be a committed partner with the Foundation. The following year, KACF officially launched our west coast affiliate, Korean American Community Foundation of San Francisco (KACF-SF), to meet the needs of the most vul- nerable in their local community. KACF-SF shares our mission of serving under-resourced Korean Americans, and is an important partner in our work to advance Korean American philanthropic participation, voice and influence.

Over the past 13 years, KACF has invested in programs that deliver essential services to meet the immediate needs of low-income individuals and families. Recently, we have begun to expand our reach to support programs that address root cause issues that are creating barriers for self-sufficiency. Furthermore, KACF has made significant investments in capacity building—management practices that build up high-performing organizations—which will have lasting impact in the nonprofits that we fund and the communities that they serve.

FINANCIAL CHANGE LEADERSHIP MANAGEMENT MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT

Like any business, nonprofits organizations need staff who are experts in the field, a clear mission and vision, a concrete workplan, financial resources and effective systems to achieve their goals. Yet these organizations that are important social safety nets for vulnerable community members often operate with very limited resources. Many choose to focus on day-to-day service delivery to meet their immediate needs. Others that seek to build up their organizational development to yield greater efficiency simply do not have the funds to hire nonprofit management consultants who can guide them in this work. For many non- profits in the Korean and other immigrant communities, an additional barrier is the lack of bilingual and bicultural consultants whom they can engage even if they do have the funds.

28 KOREAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY FOUNDATION KACF has recognized that we need to invest in two areas in order to affect real change: support programs that provide services to individuals and families AND infrastructure building projects that will increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the nonprofits.

In the Foundation’s capacity building work, KACF takes a two-pronged approach to meet the needs of grantee partners that are in different stages of organizational development and with varying concerns.

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE (TA) GRANTS The TA Grants—up to $2,500 for current grantee partners—aim to help the staff and board of grantee partners increase their capacity to lead and manage their organizations.

CAPACITY BUILDING CONSULTANT PROGRAM

In 2013, KACF launched the Capacity Building Consultant Program to strengthen Korean nonprofits with cultural and lan- guage appropriate assistance, as well as to develop a cohort of Korean American nonprofit professionals. To support the KACF Consultant and his/her work with nonprofits, KACF selected Community Resource Exchange (CRE), a 35-year-old nonprofit management consultancy, as a program partner to leverage the breadth and depth of the consultancy’s expertise and resources.

Chantal Kim joined as the first KACF Consultant in 2013 and primarily works with our Korean grantee partners. After assessing their needs, Chantal, in partnership with the grantee partners’ board and staff, develops and implements strategies that will strengthen the organizations and allow their work to have a greater impact in our community.

2015 ANNUAL GALA 29 Creating Change

Your KACF Stronger Investment Innovation Community

We believe it is the role of the Foundation to provide individuals and families who are committed to philanthropy the opportunity to leave a legacy of a stronger and more vibrant community for present and future generations. One of the ways KACF engages in this work is by inviting our donors to participate in our grantmaking. Through this process, they learn about the unmet needs in the community along with the nonprofits that are on the frontlines in addressing them, and join the Foundation in investing in solutions.

KACF practices a participatory grantmaking model, and each year, we form a Community Grants Committee (CGC) comprised of volunteers with diverse personal and professional experiences. Following comprehensive trainings, CGC members read grant proposals, visit applicant organizations under the guidance of the KACF Program Director, and make funding recommendations to a smaller Board committee. Through the CGC, the Foundation develops a cohort of educated and engaged community volunteers, activists and strategic philanthropists.
