Theorising the Iranian Ancestry of Bulgar(ian)s1 (19th – 21st Century) Yordan Lyutskanov (Institute for Literature, BAS – Sofia) Introduction Bulgarians have several genealogical myths with noble protagonists, but these myths are more or less marginal. One of them is to be found in the late 12th century Chronicle of Michael the Syrian and it reads, in brief, the following: three brothers, Scythians, with 30 thousand people left the valleys of Mount Imeon (Pamir) and after 60 or 65 days they were at the bank of the river of Tanais (Don); one of the brothers, named Bulgarios, crossed the river with 10 thousand men and marching towards Danube asked emperor Maurice to give his people land to settle; Maurice gave him Upper and Lower Moesia and Dacia, and they settled there as a Roman guard; and these Scythians were called by the Romans Bulgar(ian)s (Sources, 2002: 24). Works of modern historiography, which shaped the common knowledge of early Bulgarian history, underestimated it, relying instead on another one... What I want to stress is that such accounts are given meaning within myths of a ‘second degree’, produced to explain the origin according to the conventions of ‘scholarship’. This specific designing of collective self-cognition and self-identification is called sometimes, when a Durkheimian approach is employed, “ethnohistory” (as makes Daskalov, 1994: 27-35). In the 1960s–1980s the scholarly myth read that the Bulgarian ethnos was built of Slavs, Bulgars (who were considered a relatively small Turkic horde which left a few traces in Bulgarian culture) and the remnants of Roman population (mostly descendants of Hellenised or Romanised Thracians), and that the process took the 8th – 10th centuries. -

MEDIEVAL PERSPECTIVES AFTER THE FALL Marianne Sdghy Fifteen years, three-hundred ninety-three MAs one hundred fifty one PhD students, and more than fifty PhD dissertations. Statistically speaking, this is the Medieval Studies Department. Spiritually, however, much more happened in the past decade and a half in our department and in our world. How can we spell this out? When we asked sixteen alumni to tell us about the state of medieval research in their home countries and about the changes and continuities they see around them, we were interested in exploring the destinies of our craft after the fall of communism and in mapping up our alumni's integration in the new world that we are constructing. Their responses offer invigorating perspectives not only about the survival, but happily also about the revival, of medieval scholarship in Central and Eastern Europe. As the Middle Ages are traditionally credited with ethnogenesis, state formation, the creation of national symbols and national monarchies, in the wake of the demolition of the Iron Curtain, when a series of new states emerged in search of legitimacy, the rise of a new interest in the medieval heritage was largely predictable. Redolent of past prestige, the medieval past has been used and abused in the present for purposes of ethnic self-definition and national consciousness. The recognition that the Middle Ages are yet to be "invented" in East Central Europe to serve as a future basis for an open society had contributed to the foundation of our department in 1993. The "explosion" of Late Antiquity, the revision of ideas of decline and fall with respect to the Roman Empire conferred an added interest in the Middle Ages. -

Stepanov STATE-FORMATION IN DANUBIAN BULGARIA, AD 681–865: RELIGIOUS DIMENSIONS* The aim of this article is to look at the historiography and methods of study of the religion(s) in pagan Danubian Bulgaria, i. e. the main hypotheses existing in nowadays Bulgarian scholarship, namely Tengrism, Zoroastrianism, and Mithraism. Is it possible to claim that all these three religions co-existed in Danubian Bulgaria prior to AD 865 and played a vital role in the formation of the Bulgar state and its political ideology? Or, if existing written and archeological evidence are taken into account, it would be more correct to consider that there was only one pagan religion in the Bulgar lands before AD 865? What is the historiographical situation up to this moment? Using one and the same sources but viewing and interpreting them through different «glasses» and methods scholars claim different «truths» and make different conclusions. Therefore the question, why it happens like that, is absolutely reasonable. Given that situation with evidence available, one may ask is it more correct to search for a differentiation-and-separation of religiosity amongst the different strata in the Bulgar society. If so, scholars could expect — using for instance the theoretical model of George Dumézil and his followers — that amongst the different strata of the Bulgar society there were different cults, too1. Yet another question is that of the Christian faith on Bulgar territory until AD 865; I shall also pay attention to it at the end of this article.
