    The Gazette of the American Friends of Lafayette No. 87 October 2017 Lafayette College, June 2017 Inside This Issue Newsletter 1 friendsoflafayette.org PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Friend of Lafayette, This year, 2017, continues to be an important year for the commemoration of Lafayette and his legacy and for The AFL. Since the publication of No. 86 of the Gazette in May, 80 AFL members celebrated our hero with a wonderful annual meeting in Bethlehem, Easton and Philadelphia, PA. Our special thanks to Diane Shaw and Pam Murray of Lafayette College for organizing and hosting our group. At the meeting, the membership approved the sites for 2018 and 2019, leaving it to the Board of Governors to determine the order. Chuck Schwam and I advocated for Annapolis/Baltimore and Savannah/Edisto Island respectively for 2018. After a spirited debate conducted respectfully and without charges or countercharges, the Board by majority vote approved Annapolis for 2018 and Savannah the following year. AFL members participated in a number of other important events from June to October. These were the US Embassy’s Picpus Cemetery event held this year on June 30, 2017 where Augie Huber placed the AFL wreath, our own Picpus ceremony on the traditional date of July 4, a wreath-laying at the Baltimore Lafayette equestrian statue, which is 100 years old, on Lafayette’s birthday, September 6, and a ceremony to inaugurate the placement of equestrian statues of Generals Lafayette and Pershing in the town of Versailles, France in early October. Still to come are the Yorktown Day festivities from October 18 to 20 – see Chuck’s article for details – and a visit to the Governor’s Mansion in Richmond on the anniversary, October 27, of Lafayette’s visit there.

    JeffersonJune 25 – Julyin 1, 2017Paris Seminar with University of Virginia’s School of Architecture Professors LOUIS NELSON, Associate Dean, Professor of Architectural History, and RICHARD GUY WILSON, Commonwealth Professor of Architectural History (below) Hall of Mirrors Ceiling at Versailles / Dennis Jarvis Immerse yourself in late 18th-century Paris and trace the footsteps of Thomas Jefferson and other early American leaders, relive their encounters and triumphs and visit the places that inspired them. During the very formative years of the United States of America, many of our Founding Fathers found themselves thousands of miles from home in Paris, France. Their subtle diplomacy to the French court was key in obtaining military support and, later, helping our new nation gain a solid footing on the international scene. Perhaps foremost among these leaders was Thomas Jefferson, who spent five years in the City of Lights, mostly as American minister to France. Jefferson was in Paris at a fascinating and volatile time, with the winds of reform buffeting the ancient royal court, although few imagined the cataclysmic events of the French Revolution that were just around the corner. While in Paris, Jefferson exchanged ideas with preeminent French thinkers and experts about political economy, the fine arts, agriculture, trade and fine food and wine. This unique seminar allows University of Virginia alumni, parents and friends to experience the Paris in which Jefferson and his early American contemporaries lived—tracing his footsteps, reliving his encounters and triumphs, retelling personal anecdotes in the very places they occurred and visiting the places that inspired him. Morning lecture series are interspersed with intelligent excursions to key places in the Parisian stays of our early diplomats—Versailles, the Hôtel de Salm, the palace where the Treaty of Paris was signed ending the Revolutionary War, even the locations of the homes of Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and John Paul Jones.

Choumigorski, the numerous gaps in which are to be explained by the severities of a censorship that now finds no defenders, nor yet to the numerous extracts, reproduced, many years ago, in various publications in Russia, France, and other countries, but even in MS. ' the Recollections,' since they were first written, passed freely from hand to hand, and a considerable number of copies were made of them.
