Remembrances of War May 28th - June 8th 2022 Here is your invitation to join fellow Fummers, and their friends and relatives, on a unique tour exploring the relationship between the United States and France over the course of two World Wars and the peace-time in between, paying special attention to the roles played by F&M students and alums. The itinerary has been designed in conjunction with three F&M professors: Carrie Landfried, Maria Mitchell, and Louise L. Stevenson, all of whom will be hosting the tour and each bringing their own special knowledge and expertise to enrich your experience. We hope you’ll join us next spring for Remembrances of War. Saturday, May 28th - Departure from your chosen U.S. gate- way city. Overnight: Plane Sunday, May 29th - Your arrival at Paris, Charles de Gaulle Airport will be met for the transfer to our hotel in Château- Thierry. If our rooms are not available for immediate check- in, there will be time to find lunch and begin exploring the town. This afternoon after time to unpack and rest up from the journey, we will visit the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery and take part in the Memorial Day remembrance service held here every year. This evening we will gather for dinner at the hotel. (D) Overnight: Château-Thierry. We’ll spend the morning in Belleau stopping at the German Military Cemetery, the Belleau Wood American Monu- ment, and the church and museum in the village. On our return to Château-Thierry, we will have free time for lunch and then gather again to visit the Musée du Trésor de l’Hôtel-Dieu and the American Reformed Church, with its vase and cross dedicated to Franklin & Marshall soldiers. Before returning to the hotel for dinner, we’ll tour the house of Jean de la Fontaine, the town’s most famous son and author of the famous 17th-century fables. (B, D) Overnight: Château-Thierry Thursday, June 2nd - We will enjoy a free morning in Château-Thierry. After lunch, we will drive into Paris and check into our hotel in the historic Marais quarter of the city. Dinner is included this evening. (B, D) Overnight: Paris Friday, June 3rd - One of the most beautiful cities of the western world unfolds at your feet. From the meandering Seine, with its strongly delineated Left and Right Banks lined with booksellers, to the staggering Gothic splendor of Notre Dame (still under scaffolding), to the delicate filigree of the Tour Eiffel, Paris comes to life in a swirl of superlatives. Our morning sightseeing tour with a local guide will take us through quaint streets offering highlights that include the celestial heights of Sacrée Coeur, the wide boulevards of the Champs-Élysées, and the giddy majesty of the Arc de Triomphe.Our tour will end at the Picpus Cemetery, the burial place of Lafayette – and over a thousand victims of Madame Guillotine. For lunch, you may choose to sample café life, and the rest of the day is free to explore—perhaps strolling along the river, taking in the jewel-like beauty of the tiny Île Saint-Louis, or discovering the Musée d’Orsay with its extraordinary Impressionist artwork. Alter- natively, you could join one of your hosts on a visit to the Museum of the Liberation Sacre Coeur de Montmartre of Paris. In the evening you’re free to sample one of the city’s superb restaurants. (B) Overnight: Paris Saturday, June 4th - Our walking tour this morning will focus on the “Lost Generation” - a term coined by Gertrude Stein to describe the expatriate American artists and writers who “came of age” during the First World War and went to live in Paris. The afternoon is free. Why not take a walk along the Seine, heading toward Place Saint-Michel near the Pont Neuf? You may wish to explore the Île de la Cité, the beautiful island that houses Notre Dame, stroll along the narrow, winding walking streets in the vicinity, or to check out the Cluny Museum of medieval art, or the Rodin Museum. From superb museums to upscale shopping to café sampling, your day in Paris will fly by. We’ll gather again this evening for dinner aboard a bateau-mouche and enjoy first-class dining as we glide past the illuminated monuments of Paris. (B, D) Overnight: Paris Sunday, June 5th - Leaving the city to the west, we’ll stop this morning at the Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial and then con- tinue to the Escadrille Lafayette Memorial, which commemorates the birth of American combat aviation, by remembering the American pilots who flew with French squadrons in World War I. We will have lunch at a nearby restaurant and then drive through Normandy to the town of Bayeux. Time permitting, we’ll make a brief stop in the city of Caen to visit the Peace Museum. On arrival in Bayeux, we’ll view the extraordinary 231-foot-long tapestry dating from 1077 that depicts the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings. Dinner is included this evening. (B, L, D) Overnight: Bayeux Monday, June 6th - We will devote a full day to exploring the sites of the Normandy Invasion of June 1944. Our stops may include a D-Day memorial event, a visit to the Major Richard Winters Memorial (Dick Winters, Class of 1941, was featured in the HBO series Band of Brothers), and the D-Day beaches at Arromanches, where the war’s largest amphibious assault began 67 years ago today. We’ll end the day with a visit to the Ferme de Vailly in the village of Tracy-sur-Mer where you can taste a local delicacy – snails! A free evening to dine out when we return to Bayeux. (B) Overnight: Bayeux Tuesday, June 7th - Leaving Normandy, we will head back towards Paris. En route, we’ll stop in the town of Giverny to visit Monet’s house and garden, where he created his enormous studies of water lilies. We’ll have a late lunch at La Maison Fournaise, the very res- taurant used in Renoir’s famous painting Déjeuner des Canotiers (Luncheon of the Boating Party) and then continue to our hotel in the Vexin Regional Park We will share a farewell dinner at the hotel this evening. (B, L, D) Overnight: Vexin Wednesday, June 8th - This morning there will be transfers to Charles de Gaulle Airport for return flights to the U.S. (B) Overnight: Home Please Note: The final hotel is approximately one hour from the airport, so you are advised not to book return flights departing before 11:00 a.m. (additional transfer fees may apply). A specialist in the 20th-century French literary movement called the nouveau roman (New Novel), her interest in the Lost Generation stems from the first-year seminar she teaches on Americans in Paris and years spent living there.
