The thesis also discusses youth cultures, not only those in Japan, but also in North- America, Europe, and elsewhere in the world; as well as discussing the theories that exist on the relation of fashion and economy of the Western world, namely in North- America and Europe. The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the possible causes of why and how the Japanese street fashion scene came to be into what it is known for today: colorful, demiurgic, and most of all, seemingly outlandish to the viewer; whilst using Japanese society and culture as a reference. Moreover, the history of certain street fashion styles of Tokyo is to be examined in this thesis. The first chapter examines and discusses youth and subcultures in the world, mentioning few examples of the various subcultures that existed, as well as introducing the Japanese school uniforms and the culture behind them. The second chapter addresses how both fashion and economy influence each other, and how the fashion in Japan was before its economic crisis in 1991.

While Harajuku fashion is associated with the commercialized death of subculture, the thriving transnational market for South Korean cosmetics is celebrated. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a more nuanced understanding of these two cultural phenomena beyond simply the “fall” of Harajuku or the “rise” of South Korean cosmetics by reading them as tools of self-branding on social media, a process which neoliberal capitalism necessitates.

Lolita Latina An Examination of Gothic and Lolita Style in the Mexican Environment A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Visual and Material Culture College of Creative Arts Massey University Wellington, New Zealand Kathryn Adèle Hardy Bernal 2019 Abstract This thesis, completed for the award of Doctor of Philosophy in Visual and Material Culture, Ph.D., examines the development of the fashion-based Mexican Gothic and Lolita movement, and its evolution from its subcultural Japanese roots. It asks, “What are the cultural conditions that encourage this movement to flourish in the Mexican environment?” In turn, “What does Mexican culture contribute to Mexican Gothic and Lolita style?” And, “What does Mexican Gothic and Lolita style say about Mexican culture, society, and beliefs?” The Gothic and Lolita movement is currently thriving in Mexico as an authentic, independent, creative, handmade fashion industry, yet to be co-opted into mainstream culture. With the do-it-yourself aspect of the movement comes its own, unique, cultural flavour. As such, it transforms and rearranges meanings of the original subcultural style in order to make new statements, which subvert the meanings, and understandings, of the Japanese Lolita identity. Investigating the songs, videos, and public performances of three contemporary white female pop stars — Fergie, Gwen Stefani, and Lady Gaga — This analysis unpack the ways that racial symbolisms, sublimated cultural memories, and repudiated racial narratives circulate in these stars’ music, lyrics, and video narratives as well as visual indicators such as fashion, hair, make-up, and posture. Because these performances represent and promote female empowerment in ways contested, yet consistent, with third wave rhetoric, some feminist critics tend to dismiss the racial dynamics as incidental or include them only in apologetic footnotes.

Many of us can trace our families back to China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Sanrio. —Eddie Huang, “Based FOB,” August 29, 2014 n 2015 two convicts tunneled out of a prison in upstate New York, leaving a note that thumbed their noses at authorities: “Have a nice day!” Accom- Ipanying this message was the image of a buck-toothed, slanty-eyed Asian face (fig. 1). The racist caricature saturated US media outlets as attempts to locate the fugitives dragged on. Against the ubiquitous display of the Asian caricature left by the fugitives, only NBC News blurred the image as if in belated awareness of the injury underlying racially reductive imagery. The much-broadcast Asian caricature uncannily reflects an almost identi- cal, also uncensored image: a juicer, manufactured by Alessi, Italian purveyor of upscale household goods (fig. 2). Ludic but functional, the design of the Mandarin Citrus-squeezer is too clever by half: the conical hat comes off to reveal a juicer; the head is a drinking cup. I found it in San Francisco in 2006 at the intersection between the financial district and Chinatown, around the corner from a Sanrio flagship store, purveyor of Hello Kitty tchotchkes.
