Charles Dodgson) is a language specialist who has verifiably altered our lexicon and created fictional worlds that serve as commentary on our ability to effectively create meaning within our existing communicative systems. This ability to create language and illustrations of everyday language issues can be traced back to his personal quest for order and meaning; the logician and teacher has uncovered the accepted language and language practices that can result in verbal confusion and ineffective speech, as well as the accepted practices that can help us to avoid verbal confusion and social conflict—all of which reveals a theorist in his own right, one who aides our understanding of signification and pragmatic social skills. Dodgson’s fictive representations of our ordinary language concerns serve as concrete examples of contextual language interactions; therefore, they serve as appropriate material for the teaching of rhetorical theory and, most especially, language arts.

  • Fluency Packet 45
FLUENCY PACKET FOR 4 - 5 GRADE BAND 40 Passages Instructions: The packet below can be used regularly over the course of a school year to help students build fluency. There are enough passages to work on one per week. We recommend that students who need it, practice reading one passage at least 3x daily for a week (15-20 repetitions). 1. First give students the opportunity to listen to a reading by a fluent reader, while “following along in their heads.” It is essential that students hear the words pronounced accurately and the sentences read with proper punctuation attended to! 2. Then have students read the passage aloud while monitored for accuracy. 3. When reading aloud, students should focus on reading at an appropriate pace, reading words and punctuation accurately, and reading with appropriate expression. 4. Students need feedback and active monitoring on their fluency progress. One idea is to do a “performance” toward the end of the week where students are expected to read the selection perfectly and be evaluated. 5. Students need to be encouraged. They know they do not read as well as they ought to and want to. It is very good to explain fluency and explain that it is fixable and has nothing at all to do with intelligence! 6. Students need to know they are obligated to understand what they read at all times. For this reason, comprehension questions and a list of high-value vocabulary words are also included with each passage. After mastery of one passage, students should move on to the next passage and repeat the process.

  • Media Release
MEDIA RELEASE ANGELINA JOLIE leads the cast of this delightful family fantasy At the heart of COME AWAY lies a tantalising ‘What if?’ - a question which forms a unique and ingeniously conceived prequel to two of the world’s most beloved and enduring pieces of children’s literature. What if, the film asks, Lewis Carroll’s Alice and J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan were brother and sister? COME AWAY premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January and launches in the US on November 12th. Directed by Brenda Chapman (Pixar’s Brave), this magical tale follows siblings Alice and Peter who transform into Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland in a bid to help their parents overcome the tragedy of losing their eldest son. Audience favourite Angelina Jolie stars alongside David Oyelowo (Les Misérables), Michael Caine, Derek Jacobi, Anna Chancellor (TVs Pennyworth) and newcomers Keira Chansa and Jordan Nash. While Oyelowo and Jolie had never been in a movie together, they are friends, whose children regularly have playdates. David felt Angelina would be ideal for the role of Rose, even though it’s not the kind of role audiences would expect of her, it allows the opportunity for her to be seen as a parent. Director Chapman agrees that Angelina brought real authenticity to the part. “She was determined to feel like a Victorian mother as opposed to a modern mother, with a reserved quality but also with such a warmth coming from her for those children. She did a beautiful job. She was also very excited, as was David, about the Littleton’s being an interracial family, because they both have interracial children.

Abstract This essay is an analysis of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The novel is often perceived merely as a trip to a fantasy world created by Alice’s imagination. The reader is conveyed to Wonderland, a world that has no apparent connection with reality. It seems to be a place ruled by nonsense and incoherence, where the reader loses track of time and space. Nonetheless, many elements of the novel reflect aspects of the author’s time, Victorian Britain. The aim of this essay is to demonstrate that one of the underlying intentions of the author was to satirise the Victorian Age. In order to corroborate this statement, the essay first provides the reader with some historical and political background, and the social and cultural background of the Victorian era. The novel is then analysed through discussing the diverse happenings of Alice’s journey through Wonderland and interpreting the references to Victorian Britain as satire. The analysis of the novel consists of two major aspects. First, an analysis of diverse elements related to the political and historical context. This exposes how British imperialism and ethnocentrism are satirised in the novel, such as through Alice’s inability to understand that Wonderland has its own set of values. The British judicial system is also satirised through the authority figures of Wonderland such as the Queen and King of Hearts. Secondly, there is an analysis of the social and cultural elements that are satirised in the novel. The satire on these elements is mainly focused on the rigid educational system of Victorian Britain, which was based on memorising techniques.
