(2019) "The Rules of #MeToo," University of Chicago Legal Forum: Vol. 2019 , Article 3. Available at: https://chicagounbound.uchicago.edu/uclf/vol2019/iss1/3 This Article is brought to you for free and open access by Chicago Unbound. It has been accepted for inclusion in University of Chicago Legal Forum by an authorized editor of Chicago Unbound. For more information, please contact [email protected]. The Rules of #MeToo Jessica A. Clarke† ABSTRACT Two revelations are central to the meaning of the #MeToo movement. First, sexual harassment and assault are ubiquitous. And second, traditional legal procedures have failed to redress these problems. In the absence of effective formal legal pro- cedures, a set of ad hoc processes have emerged for managing claims of sexual har- assment and assault against persons in high-level positions in business, media, and government. This Article sketches out the features of this informal process, in which journalists expose misconduct and employers, voters, audiences, consumers, or professional organizations are called upon to remove the accused from a position of power. Although this process exists largely in the shadow of the law, it has at- tracted criticisms in a legal register. President Trump tapped into a vein of popular backlash against the #MeToo movement in arguing that it is “a very scary time for young men in America” because “somebody could accuse you of something and you’re automatically guilty.” Yet this is not an apt characterization of #MeToo’s paradigm cases. -

European Premiere of Fisher Stevens' and Leonardo Dicaprio's BEFORE
European Premiere of Fisher Stevens’ and Leonardo DiCaprio’s BEFORE THE FLOOD added to BFI London Film Festival line-up The 60th BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express® confirms the European Premiere of BEFORE THE FLOOD from filmmakers Fisher Stevens and Leonardo DiCaprio, as a Special Presentation programme addition presented on Saturday 15 October at the Odeon Leicester Square. From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Fisher Stevens and Academy Award-winning actor, environmental activist and U.N. Messenger of Peace Leonardo DiCaprio, BEFORE THE FLOOD is a riveting account of the dramatic changes now occurring around the world due to climate change, as well as the actions we as individuals and as a society can take to prevent catastrophic disruption of life on our planet. The film follows DiCaprio as he travels to five continents and the Arctic speaking to scientists, world leaders, activists and local residents to gain a deeper understanding of this complex issue and investigate concrete solutions to the most pressing environmental challenge of our time. Fisher Stevens, director says: “We can no longer turn a blind eye to the issue of climate change; we are at a crucial moment where if we don’t act now, we will forever pay the price. I’m looking forward to sharing BEFORE THE FLOOD with the BFI London Film Festival this October. London is one of the greatest cities in the world and my hope is that this film provides a global wakeup call about our inevitable fate should we fail to act." Clare Stewart, Director BFI London Film Festival, says: “We are thrilled to be presenting the European premiere of BEFORE THE FLOOD, a film that is both an urgent and illuminating update on climate change and a passionate clarion call from Leonardo DiCaprio and Fisher Stevens.” National Geographic presents with Ratpac Documentary Films an Appian Way production in association with Insurgent docs and Diamond docs. -
