Exploring jagged, lo-fi post-rock after forming in the mid-90s, Modest Mouse has become an unlikely chart- topper with a volatile mix of punk-inspired dampness and a simmering atmosphere in the next decade. The band first broke through to the mainstream audience with platinum selling Good News to people who love bad news, their fourth full-length, in 2005. Johnny Marr, the legendary guitarist for the Smiths, was an official member of the band when they rose to number one in the 2007 film We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. Confirming its status as a true rock star, eight years later, Strangers to Ourselves reached number three on the Billboard 200 (without Marr). Modest Mouse was founded in 1992 by guitarist and vocalist Isaac Brock, bassist Eric Judy and drummer Jeremiah Greene. Brock, who had a nomadic childhood, was only 18 years old, and he lived in a shed next to his mother's trailer when Modest Mouse started working together and the barn became the rehearsal area and base of the band. In 1994, Modeste Mouse booked time at Calvin Johnson's Dub Narcotic Studio in Olympia, Washington, to cut his first record, and Johnson released his debut 7, Blue Cadet-3, Do You Connect?, on his K Records label. Modest Mouse soon began working on the album, but the project was abandoned, and the material did not come into it until 2001, when it appeared in a collection called Sad Sappy Sucker. After releasing several singles, Modest Mouse went into the studio with Johnson as a producer to record the EP, The Fruit That Ate Itself, but by the time it was released, the band had already moved to another Northwestern indie label. , Up Records. Released in 1996, This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About, produced in collaboration with Steve (who found fame a few years later as the grizzled blues tramp Sisik Steve), was the first correct album by Modeste Mouse, and rave reviews in the independent music press. In 1997, Modest Mouse returned with Lonesome Crowded West, which earned more positive press and had significant sales success by indie label standards, supported by extensive touring. As modest mouse track grew, they were courted by major-label scouts, and they eventually signed with Epic Records, which released Moon and Antarctica in 2000. A collection of demos and sessions, Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks, was released in 2001, and Brock released the album with his side project Ugly Casanova in 2002. In 2003, it was announced that drummer Green had left Modest Mouse; Benjamin Weikel of Helio Sequence became the band's new percussionist (he also doubled on keyboards), and Dunn Gallucci, who was a guest guitarist for Sad Sappy Sucker and The Lonesome Crowded West, became the band's official member. The new line-up recorded 2004's Good News for People Who Love Bad News, which proved to be Modest Mouse's commercial breakthrough, peaking in the top 20 of the album charts, spawning hit singles Float On and Ocean Breathes Salty, and selling more than a million copies when the band headlined the arena. By the end of 2004, Greene had returned to Modest Mouse, and in 2006, after Gallucci had left the band, the band hired Johnny Marr to take his place to record their next album. Marr not only appeared on 2007's We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, he became a full member of Modest Mouse and toured with the band in support of the album, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. In 2005, Brock launched his own label, Glacial Pace Records, claiming that the title reflected his own slow working habits; while Modest Mouse continued to play live shows, work on their next album progressed very gradually, and in 2009 they released a collection of banknotes and non-LP one-hand, No One's First, And You're Next, as a temporary stop. The tour was launched in support, but as Marr joined cribs, Jim Fairchild (who worked with Grandpa and All Smiles) became the band's new guitarist, and when Modest Mouse played the round show in 2012, they debuted a new line-up with the addition of second percussionist Joe Plummer. While Eric Judy was still an official member of the band, during around 2012 the date he was replaced by multi-instrumentalist Tom Peloso, who has toured with the band as a sideman since 2004. In 2014, Modest Mouse released the single Lampshades on Fire ahead of the release of their sixth studio album Strangers to Ourselves in March 2015. The song became their first alternative number one after Float On, and the album returned them to the top three in the United States. Describing the sequel as a companion album Strangers to Ourselves, Brock and the band released the lead single Poison the March 2019. :: View email as a web page :: What is it like to have a conversation with Isaac Brock? Actually, it’s a lot like listening to Modest Mouse — he’s somewhat erratic, often explosively funny, and, just when you least expect it, brutally honest and insightful. Believe it or not, but Brock now qualies as a true indie-rock elder statesman. Modest Mouse’s seventh album due out June 25, The Golden Casket, arrives 25 years after their 1996 debut, This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About. Back then, Brock was a few months shy of his 20th birthday, and he sounded like it. His early songs were rough-hewn, combustible, and lled with pointed observations about small-town blue-collar life that still seem utterly unique in the largely bourgeois world of indie music. The next two Modest Mouse albums, 1997’s The Lonesome Crowded West and 2000’s The Moon & Antarctica, are landmarks of modern indie. Then came 2004’s Good News For People Who Love Bad News, which shockingly transformed them into a multi- platinum mainstream rock band. While their output since then has come slower — just three albums in the past 17 years — Brock remains committed as ever to not repeating himself. Check out this interview where Brock talks about Modest Mouse’s discography. -- Steven Hyden, Uproxx Cultural Critic and author of This Isn't Happening: Radiohead's "Kid A" and the Beginning of the 21st Century In case you missed it... • While Crafting Songs for the Fray's Third Album
