INthe two volumes devoted to the telling of St. de Chantal's story and the origin of the Visitation, I thought I had finished my task. But a pure, sweet voice called me, that of the first of St. Chantal's daugh- ters raised to the altar, Blessed Margaret Mary. She it was who was chosen by God to finish the work of St. Francis de Sales and his great co-operatrix. Both had labored together in the construction of the 'edifice. They dug the foundations, drew the grand plans. But the crown was wanting. It was Margaret Mary, that saintly and humble virgin, who was deputed to place it on its brow. Insome way, then, the Life of our blessed Sister is a necessary sequel to the history of St. Chantal. The biography of the one illumines and perfects that of the other. But if Blessed Margaret Mary interests us as the firsc beatified daughter of the holy founders of the Visita- tion, we hesitate not to say that she awakens our syrn- pathy from still another point of view. H~ddenin the depths of her cloister, in the seclusion of a little town far from Paris, she received a first-class mission. She was deputed by Almighty God to come to the assistance of the Church in the fulfilment of a work the greatest and, at the same time, the most formidable ever accom- plished in this world. This work, we well know, is not to remain inactive in the midst of the instability of human things, of dynasties. empires, and even whole nations, which shall sooner or later crumble into dust. Nor is it to impose on man's proud reason a collection of dogmas whose titles he has, 9 Private Use Only 10 Inlroductwn. indeed, the right to study, but which can regenerate him only by humbling him. This work, still more elevated, so luminous and yet so obscure, is to persuade man tha: God loves him. Yes, one day, from the depths of His eternity, God looked upon man ; and like some great king, some powerful genius, who falls a victim to the charms oS a little lisping child, that child his own, God was capti- vated. He loved man. He loved him even to passion, even to folly. He loved him so far as to make Himself man, in order to bridge those distances which, of what- ever nature they may be, are insupportable to love. God loved man even to suffer and to die for him. Yes, He who hangs there on that gibbet, His hands and feet pierced, His Heart opened, is God ! And what is He doing there ? He is suffering, He is dying, through love ; yea, He is dying of love ! This is what the Church is commissioned to teach to man. This is the price of his regeneration. Outside this we find only feebleness of heart, shipwreck of morals. A man may indeed be an honest man ; but the folly of sacrifice, of virginity, of devotedness, of martyrdom, arises only from faith in the folly of the Cross. This love of God for man is so great, so prodigious, that it has become a scandal to the world. It is the old and universal stumbling-block, the final reason of all schisms and all unbelief. If Arius, for example, sepa- rated from the Church, it was because he could not be- lieve that that Man who had one day appeared in Judea could, without certain equivocal expressions, without exaggeration, be truly styled the Only Son of God. There was in such abasement a grandeur of love revolt- ing to the heresiarch. Nor could Nestorius admit that the EternalSon of God had reposed in the womb of an hurrrble virgin, that he had been nourished with her milk, and that He had called her mother ! Luther and Calvin,-why did they break onew the unity of the More Free Items at www.catholickingdom.com Church ? Because they could not believe either in the tribunal of reconciliation, that is, in mercy that makes no account of ingratitude; or in indulgences, that is, in one of the most tender industries of the Saviour to supply for our ever-recurring insu5ciencies ; or in the Holy Eucharist, that is, in His constant abiding with those whom He loves. Narrow hearts, which know not what it is to love ! And if in our day there are so many men that pass before the Cross wagging their head, who gaze at our altars with a smile of contempt, it is because the folly of the Cross disgusts them. Man's egotism, incapable of loving, sinks under the weight of such mysteries ; and the Church cannot draw from him this cry that would transfigure him : Et nos crcdidimps cha- rituti quam UctDcus irr nobis: " Yes, we believe that God has love for us." ' But precisely because the work is formidable, because the Church seems at some moments to bend under the weight, God comes to her aid by some master-strokes. As, when sophists multiplied, He made a sign, and we saw appear those whom we shall call volunteers, extra- ordinary agents of the truth, a St. Augustine, a St. Thomas, a Bossuet: in like manner, when the world grew cold, and God's love was no longer credited ; when we saw degenerate purity, sacrifice, apostleshin devotedness, and martyrdom,-all those qualities that derive their origin from the heart, but from the heart transfigured by divine love,-God made a sign, and we saw arise those whom we shall call volunteers, the extraordinary agents of love. Thus, for example, when Constantine ascended the imperial throne, the early persecutions passed ; when he extended over the Church his imperial purEjle, he introduced with those honors, though unknown to himself and without willing it, the seeds of lukewarmness. FUNDRAISERS! It is possible that I would rather have labored my life away on a Roman galley ship than to have been placed in charge of fundraising for any institution. However, the Lord is full of surprises. In May of 2014, the Foundation for the Sacred Arts and Music invited our choristers (Most Pure Heart of Mary Schola Cantorum) to go on pilgrimage to Rome. Not one to be bothered by details, I readily accepted the invitation before giving a thought to how the choir would pay for it. By the Grace of God we made it happen. I still don't qualify as a specialist in the field, nevertheless, I offer the following suggestions to my fellow musicians in hopes that someone, somewhere, toiling and struggling to raise more money than his house is worth, might find in them a ray of hope. Prayer: However cliche it might sound for the Catholic musician to give a perfunctory nod to the necessity of prayer, I cannot stress enough how important prayer is to your cause. I was faced with the task of getting 43 choristers to Rome, most of whom needed serious financial help, and for a year-and- a-half my daily Rosary intention was for the success of raising the necessary funds.

    DOMINICAN DEVOTION TO THE SACRED HEART LOUIS EVERY, O.P. HE HEART of Christ is the living and expressive symbol of divine and human love for all mankind. This Heart was closed before the Passion, because it was unknown, but after the Passion it was opened so that holy souls might see that all the prophecies were fulfilled. It is true that in the Middle Ages great stress was placed upon the devotion to the Wounds of the Sav­ iour without specific reference to His Sacred Heart, yet there were many devout persons in the Order of Preachers who penetrated more deeply into those Wounds and discovered in the Pierced Heart, the emblem of love and the door that opens to eternal salvation. GERMANY The earliest account of devotion to the Sacred Heart in the Do­ minican Order is found in The Light of Divinity, a small book, con­ taining the visions of a pious woman, Mechtilde ( + 1250), written at the request of her spiritual director, a Dominican friar from the con­ vent of Magdeburg. She relates that on one occasion Our Lord ap­ peared to her and said : "In the Order of Preachers there are two things, i.e., the cult shown and the great fruit derived which I esteem so highly that I always smile from the depths of My Sacred Heart; for both men and women with all the power at their command zeal­ ously preach the glory of My Majesty."1 Mechtilde always prayed that the Dominicans by their labors would continue to make repara­ tion for the insults directed against the Sacred Heart.

    Gertrude the Great, OSB Born in Eisleben, Thuringia, Germany, on January 6, 1256; died at Helfta in Saxony, c. 1302. "O Lord Jesus Christ, in union with Your most perfect actions I commend to You this my work, to be directed according to Your adorable will, for the salvation of all mankind. Amen." --Saint Gertrude Almost nothing is known about one of my favorite saint's birth or death. Saint Gertrude was probably an orphan because at age five she was received by the Cistercian nuns of Helfta and placed under the care of Saint Mechtilde (see below) of Hackeborn, mistress of novices. (Helfta was actually a Black Benedictine convent, which had been falsely designated as Cistercian for political reasons in many early records.) The intellectual level was high in the castle convent of Helfta, which was then run by the noblewoman, Saint Gertrude of Hackeborn (1232-1292). Even so, Saint Gertrude was considered an outstanding student, who devoted herself to study, especially literature and philosophy. Eventually she became a professed nun but still she concentrated on the secular. God, however, is a great teacher. Gertrude learned that when she began to get carried away with her love of learning. She didn't go so far as to neglect GERTRUDE THE GREAT the Lord completely, but she did push him off a bit to the side. Her mind was growing, but it was growing faster than her heart. Gertrude's life has a lesson for intellectuals who will profit from her example. If a syllogism moves you to ecstasy and a dissertation about the love of God makes you speechless with joy, then beware.

Nothing is known of her family, not even the name of her parents. It is clear from her life (Legatus, lib. I, xvi) that she was not born in the neighbourhood of Eisleben. When she was but five years of age she entered the alumnate of Helfta. The monastery was at that time governed by the saintly and enlightened Abbess Gertrude of Hackerborn, under whose rule it prospered exceedingly, both in monastic observance and in that intellectual activity which St. Lioba and her Anglo-Saxon nuns had transmitted to their foundations in Germany. All that could aid to sanctity, or favour contemplation and learning, was to be found in this hallowed spot. Here, too, as to the centre of all activity and impetus of its life, the work of works—the Opus Dei, as St. Benedict terms the Divine Office—was solemnly carried out. Such was Helfta when its portals opened to receive the child destined to be its brightest glory. Gertrude was confided to the care of St. Mechtilde, mistress of the alumnate and sister of the Abbess Gertrude. From the first she had the gift of winning the hearts, and her biographer gives many details of her exceptional charms, which matured with advancing years. Thus early had been formed between Gertrude and Mechtilde the bond of an intimacy which deepened and strengthened with time, and gave the latter saint a prepondering influence over the former.
