Abstract. Ubuntu is an operating system with Linux kernel based on Debian and distributed as free and open-source software. It uses Unity as its default desktop environment, which results in more difficulties of usage for Microsoft Windows users. In this paper, we present a lightweight desktop environment named UKUI based on UbuntuKylin, the official Chinese version of Ubuntu, for Linux distribution. It is designed as a pluggable framework and provides better user experience during human-computer interaction. In order to evaluate the performance of UKUI, a set of testing bench suits were performed on a personal computer. Overall, the results showed that UKUI has better performance compared with Unity. Introduction Linux is a freely available operating system (OS) originated by Linux Torvalds and further developed by thousands of others. Typically, Linux is packaged in a form known as a Linux distribution for both desktop and server use. Some of the most popular mainstream Linux distributions are Red Hat [1], Ubuntu [2], Arch [3], openSUSY [4], Gentoo [5], etc. There are several desktop environments available for nowadays modern Linux distributions, such as XFCE [6], GNOME [7], KDE [8] and LXDE [9]. -

Instead, when adding to her list, she selects a large piece of chalk and faces a blackboard covering one wall of the office she shares with the rest of the Computer Service team at Royal Roads Univer- sity in Victoria, British Columbia. Her computer is reserved for emergencies only — pastel Post-it notes form a halo around the monitor, with mes- sages like “Must do before noon today!!!” and “Check on this by 4 p.m. at the latest.” David’s many “notes to self” are part and parcel of her job as a systems analyst and coordinator of the help desk at Royal Roads. But where a typi- cal university help desk assists stu- dents as they work in an on-campus computer lab, her group deals with requests from Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa, and as far afield as the Philip- pines and South America. McKay Curtis University of Washington Abstract I present BUGS code to fit common models from item response theory (IRT), such as the two parameter logistic model, three parameter logisitic model, graded response model, generalized partial credit model, testlet model, and generalized testlet models. I demonstrate how the code in this article can easily be extended to fit more complicated IRT models, when the data at hand require a more sophisticated approach. Specifically, I describe modifications to the BUGS code that accommodate longitudinal item response data. Keywords: education, psychometrics, latent variable model, measurement model, Bayesian inference, Markov chain Monte Carlo, longitudinal data. 1. Introduction In this paper, I present BUGS (Gilks, Thomas, and Spiegelhalter 1994) code to fit several models from item response theory (IRT). Several different software packages are available for fitting IRT models. These programs include packages from Scientific Software International (du Toit 2003), such as PARSCALE (Muraki and Bock 2005), BILOG-MG (Zimowski, Mu- raki, Mislevy, and Bock 2005), MULTILOG (Thissen, Chen, and Bock 2003), and TESTFACT (Wood, Wilson, Gibbons, Schilling, Muraki, and Bock 2003). The Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN) task view \Psychometric Models and Methods" (Mair and Hatzinger 2010) contains a description of many different R packages that can be used to fit IRT models in the R computing environment (R Development Core Team 2010). Among these R packages are ltm (Rizopoulos 2006) and gpcm (Johnson 2007), which contain several functions to fit IRT models using marginal maximum likelihood methods, and eRm (Mair and Hatzinger 2007), which contains functions to fit several variations of the Rasch model (Fischer and Molenaar 1995). -

A shell script is a PC system intended to be controlled by the UNIX shell which is a charge line translator. The different tongues of shell scripts are thought to be scripting dialects. Regular operations performed by shell scripts incorporate document control, program execution, and printing content. A shell script can give an advantageous variety ofa framework order where unique environment settings, charge alternatives, or post-transforming apply naturally, yet in a manner that permits the new script to still go about as a completely typical UNIX summon. The real ideas like Programming in the Borne and C-shell, in which it would be clarified that how shell programming could be possible in Borne and C-shell. -
A Multiplatform Pseudo Terminal
A Multi-Platform Pseudo Terminal API Project Report Submitted in Partial Fulfillment for the Masters' Degree in Computer Science By Qutaiba Mahmoud Supervised By Dr. Clinton Jeffery ABSTRACT This project is the construction of a pseudo-terminal API, which will provide a pseudo-terminal interface access to interactive programs. The API is aimed at developing an extension to the Unicon language to allow Unicon programs to easily utilize applications that require user interaction via a terminal. A pseudo-terminal is a pair of virtual devices that provide a bidirectional communication channel. This project was constructed to enable an enhancement to a collaborative virtual environment, because it will allow external tools such to be utilized within the same environment. In general the purpose of this API is to allow the UNICON runtime system to act as the user via the terminal which is provided by the API, the terminal is in turn connected to a client process such as a compiler, debugger, or an editor. It can also be viewed as a way for the UNICON environment to control and customize the input and output of external programs. Table of Contents: 1. 3 Chapter 1 Introducing Python 1.1: Introduction Python is a programming language that is both simple and powerful. For those who have struggled with learning programming languages in the past, this may come as a pleasant surprise. This chapter describes some of the main features of Python and its use as a programming language to write scripts for ArcGIS. The logic and struc- ture of this book and the accompanying exercises is described, followed by some examples of how Python is used. The final part of this chapter intro- duces Python editors that make it easier to write and organize your code. 1.2: Exploring the features of Python Python has a number of features that make it the programming language of choice for working with ArcGIS. Among them: It’s simple and easy to learn: Python is easy to learn compared with other highly structured programming languages like C++ or Visual Basic. The syntax is simple, which gives you more time to focus on solving problems than having to learn the language itself. It’s free and open source: Python is free and open source software ( FOSS ). You can freely distribute copies of the software, read the source code, make changes to it, and use pieces of it in new free programs. One of the reasons Python works so well is that it has been created, and is constantly being improved, by an active and dedicated user community. The FOSS nature of Python makes it possible for Esri to distribute Python with ArcGIS software. It’s cross platform: Python is supported on different platforms, includ- ing Windows, Mac, Linux, and many others. -

Shells and Shell scripting What is a Shell? • A shell is a command line interpreter that is the interface between the user and the OS. • A “program launcher” of sorts. • The shell: o analyzes each command o determines what actions are to be performed o performs the actions • Example: wc –l file1 > file2 Which shell? • sh – Bourne shell o Most common, other shells are a superset o Good for programming • csh or tcsh – default for command line on CDF o C-like syntax o Best for interactive use. Not good for programming. • bash – default on Linux (Bourne again shell) o Based on sh, with some csh features. • korn – written by David Korn o Based on sh – Some claim best for programming. o Commercial product. Common shell facilities Shell startup When a shell is invoked, it does the following: 1. Read a special startup file (usually in home directory) 2. display prompt and wait for command 3. Ctrl-D on its own line terminates shell, otherwise, goto step 2. Shell startup files used to set shell options, set up environment variables, alias sh – executes .profile if it’s there. ksh – executes .profile if in interactive mode. Executes $ENV (usually $HOME/.kshrc) csh – executes .cshrc if it exists. If a login shell, executes .login bash – executes .bashrc, if a login shell, executes .bash_profile instead Executables vs. built-in commands Most commands you run are other compiled programs. Found in /bin Example: ls – shell locates ls binary in /bin directory and launches it Some are not compiled programs, but built into the shell: cd, echo Input-output redirection prog < infile > outfile ls > outfile 2>&1 # sh stdout and stderr Pipelining commands send the output from one command to the input of the next: ls -l | wc ps –aux | grep reid | sort Before a program is executed, the shell recognizes the special characters such as <, >, |, and rewires the standard input, output, or error file descriptors of the program about to be executed to point to the right files (or the standard input of another program). -
