THE LOVE LETTERS of JEAN GIONO to BLANCHE MEYER Patricia A. Le Page, Doctor O ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: SPACE OF PASSION: THE LOVE LETTERS OF JEAN GIONO TO BLANCHE MEYER Patricia A. Le Page, Doctor of Philosophy, 2004 Dissertation Directed By: Professor Joseph Brami, Department of French and Italian This dissertation offers a first analysis of a collection containing more than one thousand letters that Jean Giono wrote to Blanche Meyer over a thirty year period from 1939-1969. The correspondence, which was first opened to the public in January 2000, is housed at Yale University’s Beinecke Library. It has never been mentioned by Giono’s biographer or critics in spite of the light it sheds on his creative process. The liaison revealed by the letters leads to a discovery of the extraordinary role that Blanche played in Giono’s creative life. She was the only person to be so profoundly involved in his writing as the idealized image with whom he shared his internal dialogue. As the beloved “other” who inspired Giono’s lover’s discourse, she allowed him to express and examine his ideas and thus to clarify his thinking and move forward with his work. What strikes the reader upon reading the letters in conjunction with Giono’s novels, is the extent to which Giono’s life and his fiction were inspired by the myth of courtly love and how deeply his life and work were intertwined. Identifying and explicating the myth is significant because it provides an essential key to a renewed understanding and appreciation of Giono as a writer, a reinterpretation of the conception of love and sexuality he expresses in his novels, and a resolution of several important contradictions in his life and work. All of this leads to a reassessment of the legend invented by the writer himself and disseminated by his critics, that Giono was a self-taught provincial writer whose work was outside the intellectual mainstream. The letters reveal that Giono was a complex man of letters whose life was informed by the reading of literature and centered around writing and reflection. Moreover, the correspondence read as a meta-discourse along with his novels, provides a unique portrait of the artist engaged in the experience of passionate love which was for him the penultimate human experience and the apotheosis of the myth. The collection of over 1200 letters is housed in the General Collection, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut.2 I began my work on the letters on January 6, 2000, as soon as the collection was opened to the public. The letters have never been studied nor even mentioned by Giono’s critics up to this date nor has Giono’s relationship with Blanche Meyer ever been made public. The only mention of Blanche or the correspondence occurs in an article written by Jolaine Meyer, Blanche’s daughter.3 The Yale collection of letters, as large as it is, is not exhaustive however. There is a smaller collection housed at Laval University, Province of Québec, Canada, which I have not yet read. In addition, according to the curator of the collection at the Beinecke Library, Blanche had begun selling the letters to various collectors before her friend Jean Gaudon, former member of the Yale University French Department, persuaded her to allow Yale to acquire the collection. Therefore it is likely that in addition to the Laval collection, there are 1 The letters are not included with this manuscript.     Letters before letters Ewen Bowie The genre of ‘epistle’/’letter’, including its species ‘love letter’, was developed and depended upon a world that had access to writing. Was the notion of communication of ideas to a remote audience therefore foreign to a pre-literate Greek society? Several poems surviving from the archaic period, when Greek culture was moving from an oral to an oral-cum-literate stage, show that it was not. Just as a king or community might arrange for a messenger to memorise a message and deliver it to a chosen recipient, so too a poet could have a friend or associate memorise a poem or, in most cases, a song, and sing that to an audience remote from the poet himself or herself. Our clearest case is Alcaeus fr. 428, where we have two testimonia, Herodotus 5.94-5 and Strabo 13.1.38 (600), who present complementary data, and surely both had access to and drew on Alcaeus’ poem, most of which is lost to us. It seems that the poem was addressed to Melanippus (also the addressee of the meta-sympotic fr. 38A), and asked him to act as a herald (kēryx) to carry to Mytilene the news of Alcaeus’ loss of his armour to the Athenians. Not, therefore, a remote immediate addressee: but Alcaeus envisages two audiences, Melanippus, and doubtless other hetairoi, in the hic et nunc in the Troad, and then other, remote Mytileneans back home. That Alcaeus presented himself giving instructions to Melanippus underlines the expectation that this song will be sung in Mytilene, but of course the move is one Alcaeus can make because he knows that sympotic songs of all sorts travel from one part of the Greek world to another, carried by singing symposiasts who learn a song that they like, whether for its tune, its words or its message, and then sing it at another symposium.

Morehead State University, 1979 Director of Thesis=---~---'_ 1.,.9~-·-f,_1&,-;~...,.#?...------ Louis Aragon, a modern French poet, many of whose poems were published clandestinely by the French underground during World War II, became a national hero to the people of France, He was a founder of the Surrealist movement and was deeply involved with Cubism and Dadaism. During the early 1930's, however, Aragon broke with these movements when he joined the Communist party. Partly because of his ideology, Aragon has not established a literary reputation in the United States. More importantly, however, is the lack of English translations of his works of poetry. Most of his novels have been translated into English, but the I present author has found to date only one volume of I l poetry which was translated by e. e. cummings, The Red Front, whose original title is Front Rouge, published l in 1933 by Contempo Publishers. j This thesis , Aragon: A Translation, is an English translation of Aragon by Ge orges Sadoul , consisting of t hree sections. The first one is a crit ical and biographical treatise on Aragon written by Ge orges Sadoul. It treats the early life of Louis Aragon and Elsa , his wife , beginning with Sadoul ' s initial meeting of Aragon i n the 1920' s and continuing through Aragon ' s love affai r with the U. S . S . R. in the 19JO ' s and his involvement with the underground forces duri ng World War II in his native France . The second part of the thesis is a choice of t exts written by Aragon and selected by Sadoul .

    RFC’s Library’s Book Guide 2017 Since the beginning of our journey at the Royal Film Commission – Jordan (RFC), we have been keen to provide everything that promotes cinema culture in Jordan; hence, the Film Library was established at the RFC’s Film House in Jabal Amman. The Film Library offers access to a wide and valuable variety of Jordanian, Arab and International movies: the “must see” movies for any cinephile. There are some 2000 titles available from 59 countries. In addition, the Film Library has 2500 books related to various aspects of the audiovisual field. These books tackle artistic, technical, theoretical and historical aspects of cinema and filmmaking. The collec- tion of books is bilingual (English and Arabic). Visitors can watch movies using the private viewing stations available and read books or consult periodi- cals in a calm and relaxed atmosphere. Library members are, in addition, allowed to borrow films and/or books. Membership fees: 20 JOD per year; 10 JOD for students. Working hours: The Film Library is open on weekdays from 9:00 AM until 8:00 PM. From 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Saturdays. It is closed on Fridays.
