The Pirate netters hosted Yulee Tuesday on the clay courts at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort. The Fernandina Beach High School tennis team swept the Yulee Hornets. Will Hererra defeated Nate Hebert 8-0; Jack Curley defeated Jan Sanchez 8-0; Peter Bresko defeated Brady Nowell 8-1; Graham Murphy defeated Andrew Schambach 8-0; and Gavin Bocian defeated William Owen 8-1 in boys singles matches. Hererra and Curley teamed up to beat Hebert Nowell 8-0 at No. 1 boys doubles; and Bresko and Murphy defeated Sanchez and Schambach 8-2 at No. 2. “We are happy with the way we played, and even more pleased that we were able to win our first district match,” said Mark Durr, FBHS boys head coach. “We had a slow start Monday versus Brantley County but were able to pull that one out at the end with the strong play of both doubles teams and Gavin winning his tie-break set in dramatic fash- PHOTOS BY BETH JONES/NEWS-LEADER ion. The Lady Pirates also swept Yulee on Tuesday. In girls singles action, Aspen Boler defeated Antonia Fields 8-0; Katie Rowland defeated Katie Brumfiel 8-0; Ella Doss defeated Lindsey Nabors 8-0; Emilia Simpson defeated Lauryn Meredith 8-0; and Brita Bocian defeated Isabella Spidaliere 8-0. Boler and Rowland defeated Fields and Brumfiel 8-0 at No. 1 doubles; and Simpson and Doss defeated Nabors and Meredith 8-3 at No. 2. “This team continues to impress us day after day,” said Julie Durr, head girls tennis coach at FBHS. “Their balance of spirit on and off the court with their big point focus on match day really makes us feel good about this team heading into district play. “Boler and Rowland are still undefeated at No. 1 doubles and really lead this team on a daily basis. The styles of these two really seem to complement each other, and their com- munication is getting better and more polished with every match. “They are the stars of this district and are the team to beat.
