FLIGHT SA, Accompanied WW1869 Carnelia/Arr FLIGHT SA, accompanied WW1869 Carnelia/arr. Murphy FLIGHT SA with Piano and Optional String Quartet Music by CRAIG CARNELIA Arranged by RYAN MURPHY Flight Let me run thru a field in the night, let me lift from the ground ‘til my soul is in flight. Let me sway like the shade of a tree, let me swirl like a cloud in a storm on the sea. Wish me on my way thru the dawning day. I wanna flow, wanna rise, wanna spill, wanna grow in a grove on the side of a hill. I don’t care if the train runs late, if the checks don’t clear, if the house blows down. I’ll be off where the weeds run wild, where the seeds fall far from this earthbound town. And I’ll start to soar. Watch me rain ‘til I pour. I’ll catch a ship that’ll sail me astray, get caught in a wind, I’ll just have to obey ‘til I’m flyin’ away... Let me leave behind all the clouds in my mind. I wanna wake without wondering why, finding myself in a burst for the sky. High! I’ll just roll. Let me lose all control. I wanna float like a wish in a well, free as the sound of the sea in a shell. I don’t know, but maybe I’m just a fool. I should keep to the ground. I should stay where I’m at. Maybe everyone has hunger like this, and the hunger will pass. But I can’t think like that. All I know is somewhere, thru a clearing, there’s a flickering of sunlight on a river long and wide, and I have such a river inside. Let me run through a field in the night, let me lift from the ground ‘til my soul is in flight. Let me sway like the shade of a tree, let me swirl like a cloud in a storm on the sea. Wish me on my way thru the dawning day. I wanna flow, wanna rise, wanna spill, wanna grow on the side of a hill, wanna shift like a wave rollin’ on, wanna drift from the path I’ve been traveling upon, before I am gone. -Craig Carnelia (1992) Duration: Approx. 4:20 3 for Dr. Cherilyn Worthen and the Utah Valley University Women's Chorus Flight SA, Piano, and Optional String Quartet* CRAIG CARNELIA Arranged by RYAN MURPHY (b. 1971) With yearning ( h»66 ) w w œ 2 w ww œ & b 2 w Piano P 2 w w & b 2 w w w œ Pedal harmonically throughout w œ 6 P S & b ∑ ∑ ∑ Œ œ œ œ œ œ Let me run thru a A & b ∑ ∑ ∑ ∑ œ w w & b œ . œ# b & œ w w œ œ œ 10 & b œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ eld in the night, let me lift from the ground 'til my soul is in ight. & b ∑ ∑ ∑ PREVIEW ww ww w & b œ & b w w œ# w * Full score and string parts are available for sale separately (WW1869A). • A Lighting Design Process for a Production of Stephen Schwartz’S Working
A LIGHTING DESIGN PROCESS FOR A PRODUCTION OF STEPHEN SCHWARTZ’S WORKING A Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree Master of Fine Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Matthew Dale McCarren, B.A. The Ohio State University 2008 Masters Examination Committee: Approved By Mary A. Tarantino, M.F.A., Advisor Daniel A.Gray, M.F.A. Advisor Graduate Program in Theatre Maureen Ryan, M.F.A. ABSTRACT Stephen Schwartz’s Working was produced at The Ohio State University Department of Theatre during the spring quarter of 2008. Included in this document is all of the documentation used for the implementation of the lighting design for this production. The need to work forces humans to interact with one another daily and requires us to deal with the added stressors that being in contact with other humans creates. This theme is central to the story of Working and is a major point of emphasis for our production of Working. Chris Roche in his Director’s Concept states, “The construction of Working at first glance seems isolated and solitary, so many different stories – but very little unifying factor. I believe the common thread is the workers themselves. Who do we meet on a daily basis, and how does each of those domino-like moments affect the greater whole of our lives?” In support of the director’s concept, the lighting design for Working aimed to create two separate lighting environments one of reality and the other of fantasy. The challenge was to then connect the separate environments into one seamless world where the line of reality and fantasy are blurred.

28 28TH ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF NEW MUSICALS WELCOME 1 FROM THE NATIONAL ALLIANCE FOR MUSICAL THEATRE’S PRESIDENT WELCOME To our 28th ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF NEW MUSICALS! Where can 600 people immerse themselves for two days in the possibility and potential of musical theatre? Where can you travel from New England to Egypt to England (in two different centuries) in a single day? Where can the writers of eight new shows have the opportunity to showcase their work to their perfect target audience, an audience filled with people who can help them find their next best step forward? Only at NAMT’s annual Festival of New Musicals. The shows you’ll see were selected through a blind process by our amazingly hard-working Festival Committee, from a pool of nearly 200 new works. They were, of course, picked for their quality, but they were also selected because of the range of worlds, characters and themes they explore. They’ll make you laugh, perhaps gasp, probably rethink a long-held perspective…good musical theatre is wonderfully stealthy that way. You’ll leave New World Stages entertained, challenged, provoked. We’re delighted that you’re here to spend two days with us; we hope it’s the beginning of a much longer relationship between you and these exciting writers and their pieces. The Festival is just the starting point, the spark to ignite ongoing development. Our sponsors, donors and advertisers make this Festival possible, by supporting this important annual event and NAMT this week and throughout the year. Thank you! Many thanks again, as well, to the Festival Committee, the NAMT staff and all of you, our audience.
