EDITOR@THECOWL. COM Page 22 Sports1995-1996 Bulls April 21, 2016 First of all, let us all congratulate the 2015-2016 Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association for a historic run. They do, in fact, hold the new record for most wins in an NBA regular season by finishing with a record of 73-9. The eye tests, conducted by everyone who has watched the Warriors play this season at some point, show that this team will likely repeat as NBA Champions. However, we cannot discredit the basketball dominance that the 1995-1996 Chicago Bulls displayed during their reign over their magical run to a championship. Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson are arguably the best shooting duo in basketball history, but they do not compare to the overall basketball dominance of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. Both Jordan and Pippen are Hall of Fame players, who were already on top of the basketball universe after pulling off three straight championships from 1990 to 1993. The highlight reel of this specific Bulls team is memorable, especially considering pressure of the sports world that was on their shoulders. Jordan was one year returned from his 1st retirement, and sports critics were wondering if he would ever be able to return to his former glory. That Bulls team silenced those critics with great defense, efficient passing, and chemistry. The 1995-1996 Bulls had role models in Steve Kerr, Dennis Rodman, and Toni Kukovc, all of whom were provided pivotal to the team’s success. Rodman provided the defensive intensity. Kukoc spread the floor with his midrange jump shot. Kerr was the three-point marksman who played fearlessly and stepped up in the clutch when Jordan and Pippen were blocked by others. Kerr knows what it takes to continue to win as he now serves as the brains behind the Warriors’ historic run in the position of Head Coach. When the chips were down and the team was in desperate need of a play, Jordan and Pippen were locked in and played at a legendary level. The 2015-2016 Warriors are on pace to potentially create their own place within basketball history. However, the Warriors have some more greatness to show before they can take the place of “His Airness” and his company.

PHOTO COURTESY OF THINGLINK.COM -Brannon Walker-Hodges ’16 PHOTO COURTESY OF PINTEREST.COM who is the best team in nba history?

2015-2016 Warriors If you follow ESPN on social media, you’ve probably been inundated with a lot of obscure, meaningless stats in the past —even to the point where the truly historic ones do not have the same impact. I think this is part of the reason why you see comments on every Warriors status that ESPN posts from apathetic fans who have heard enough about the Warriors already. But let’s take a step back. This season, the Warriors have won 73 games in the regular season, the most in NBA history. Stephen Curry broke his own record for most three-pointers made in a season…by more than a hundred. Aside from the unheard of numbers that they have been putting up this season, the “eye test” is another way to measure the Warriors’ greatness. Sure, when you watch footage of the old Jordan Bull’s teams, you see the greatest of all time—an individual who simply could not be stopped from scoring— as well as a phenomenal two-way player in Scottie Pippen and perhaps the best pound-for-pound rebounder ever in Dennis Rodman. But when you watch the Warriors, you see a team that just seems inhumanly in-sync on every possession. Yes, Curry and Klay Thompson are excellent shooters and scorers, and Draymond Green is a rare defensive talent, but the impression you get when you watch is that they love playing as a team. But what pushes them to the status of greatest team ever is the way they, as a whole, have adapted to the modern game. True centers are being phased out in favor of 6’8’’ utility guys who can play multiple positions. The Warriors have that covered with their impressive array of versatile wing players. As their owner rightly said, the Warriors are light years ahead of the competition this season. -Nate Svogun ’16 PHOTO COURTESY OF FINANCE.YAHOO.COM PHOTO COURTESY OF BLEACHERREPORT.COM The Cowl 23 SPORTS April 21, 2016
