This study focused on five major ethnic groups (Gujars, Jadoons, Syeds, Tanolis, and Yousafzais) of Buner and Swabi Districts, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan, through investigations of variations in morphological traits of the permanent tooth crown, and by molecular anthropology based on mitochondrial and Y-chromosome DNA analyses. The frequencies of seven dental traits, of the Arizona State University Dental Anthropology System (ASUDAS) were scored as 17 tooth- trait combinations for each sample, encompassing a total sample size of 688 individuals. These data were compared to data collected in an identical fashion among samples of prehistoric inhabitants of the Indus Valley, southern Central Asia, and west-central peninsular India, as well as to samples of living members of ethnic groups from Abbottabad, Chitral, Haripur, and Mansehra Districts, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and to samples of living members of ethnic groups residing in Gilgit-Baltistan. The beautiful Swat valley is his home, like it is the home of the Yusafzai Pashtuns who have lived here for the last sev- eral hundred years. In 11th century, Swat was attacked and occupied by Mehmod Ghaznavi, a controversial Muslim ruler from Ghazni in present day Afghani- stan. The legend says he defeated Raja Geera, a ruler of Hindu Shahi Kingdom, near Udigram, a town in lower Swat Valley. During his reign, Pash- tun tribes like the Dilazak and Swatis settled in the valley. The large Yusafzai Pashtun tribe, who are predominantly Muslim, occupied the land they currently occupy in 16th century and forced the Dialazaks and Swatis to leave the area, but differences remained in the population. For example, the Muslims and Hindus in Swat belonged to two distinct religions- Muslims believed in the unity of God and resurrection after death, while Hindus worshiped hundreds of deities and believed in reincarnation.

The study asks, first, how did a movement of lower classes, specifi- cally tenant farmers and landless labourers, win concessions from landed elites and also shape the direction and institutionalization of state power in the 1970s? Second, why did revolutionary politics in Pakistan decline and fade away, diverging from its counterparts in other parts of South Asia? Based on archival research, oral history, and participant observation, the study divides a narrative of nearly forty years of events into three critical conjunctures, comparing and con- trasting the interactions of radical organizers, rural classes, the political organizations represent- ing exploiting propertied classes, and the state. The first conjuncture concerns the late 1940s, when the Communist Party of Pakistan’s inadequate preparation and organization of peasants led to an ultimately failed movement in the northern Hashtnagar area. The second conjuncture co- vers the period from the late 1960s to the early 1970s in which the communists formed the Maz- door Kisan Party.
