Using tenets of ethnography, this study aimed to explore the everyday experiences of first time breastfeeding mothers in the early weeks following birth. Methods: Using a camcorder, five mothers captured their real-time experiences in a video diary, until they perceived their infant feeding was established. A multi-dimensional approach involving thematic analysis was developed to ensure that both the audio and visual elements of the data were analysed. Findings: Three themes, significant to mothers were identified. First, how the camcorder empowered mothers to record their experiences ‘24/7’, providing audiovisual insights into the socio-cultural context and embodied nature of breastfeeding. Embodying the camcorder enabled mothers to offload their thoughts, feelings and experiences in real-time, revealing an emotional rollercoaster. The second theme showed how the video diary provided a platform for mothers to work out how to survive their ‘state of flux’ with their breastfeeding baby. Deep personal reflection involved identity work and plans to get back to ‘normal’. The third theme highlighted the complex nature of support including what mothers experienced when they felt under medicalised surveillance by the healthcare team, nurtured, influenced or undermined by family and friends, and when they sought information for themselves. Conclusions: For the first time, this thesis reports on the ‘unique presence of being there’ to observe mothers’ real-time everyday experiences of breastfeeding as recorded in their video diaries. It reveals the unique therapeutic role of the camcorder, the evolving nature of mothers’ identities in the first few weeks after birth, the impact of commercialisation on breastfeeding and the negative impact of medicalised surveillance when healthcare workers scrutinised rather than supported breastfeeding mothers. This severe breast congestion causes the nipple-areola area to become flattened and tense, making it difficult for the baby to latch-on correctly. The result can be sore, damaged nipples and poor milk transfer during feeding attempts. This ultimately results in diminished milk supply. When the infant is unable to latch-on or nurse effectively, alternative methods of milk expression are necessary, such as using an electric breast pump. Recurrent plugged ducts A clogged duct is a temporary back-up of milk that occurs when one or more of the lobes of the breast do not drain well. This usually results from incomplete emptying of milk. Counseling on feeding frequency or method or advising against wearing an overly tight bra or clothing can assist. Mastitis Mastitis is a breast infection that causes a flu-like illness accompanied by an inflamed, painful area of the breast - putting both the health of the mother and successful breastfeeding at risk.

For many these are strange new words despite the fact that it is a relatively common condition. Treating tongue tie fell out of medical favour in the early 1950s. In breastfeeding circles, it was talked about occasionally, but until recently few health care professionals screened babies for tongue tie and it was frequently overlooked as a cause of common breastfeeding difficulties. In the last few years tongue tie and the related condition lip tie have exploded into the consciousness of mothers and breastfeeding helpers. So why all the fuss about tongue and lip ties all of a sudden? Tongue tie seems to be a relatively common problem, affecting 4-11%1 of the population and it can have a drastic impact on breastfeeding. The presence of tongue tie triples the risk of weaning in the first week of life.2 Here in Alberta it has been challenging to find competent assessment and treatment, prompting several Alberta mothers and their babies to fly to New York in 2011 and 2012 to receive treatment. The dedication and persistence of these mothers has spurred action on providing education and treatment options for Alberta families. In August of 2012, The Breastfeeding Action Committee of Edmonton (BACE) brought Dr. Lawrence Kotlow to Edmonton to provide information and training to area health care providers.

We report a 27-year-old woman who developed unilateral breast engorgement with galactorrhea 18 days after initiation of escitalopram (10 mg/day). The symptom remitted 7 days after withdrawal of escitalopram and did not subsequently recur during maintenance therapy with agomelatine (25 mg/day). Boucher’s comments, which emerged in response to the barrage of both criticism and acclaim elicited by this selfie, suggest that breastfeeding selfies occupy a liminal space and, as such, are not easily integrated into the conventions of selfie culture. Nevertheless, they are also understood by their creators as powerful sites of self-making and community building. In this essay, we examine the politics and production of breastfeeding selfies. We argue that the breastfeeding selfie’s political potential resides at the juncture between sexuality and motherhood. More specifically, it forces mothers (as photographers, subjects, and audience members) and viewers to confront a thorny question: How can one articulate a virtuous maternal self through the lens of what has been broadly understood, within the mainstream media, as a profoundly narcissistic genre? And further, how might breastfeeding—that iconic, embodied practice of motherhood—trouble the very idea of the selfie? To ask these questions, we draw on the notions of socially mediated publicness (Baym & boyd, 2012), microcelebrity (Marwick & boyd, 2011), and networked publics (boyd, 2011).

Approximately eighty percent of Internet users search for health information online, and surveys indicate that the Internet now rivals physicians as the most common source of health advice. 1 The Internet is also a place where information can be spread quickly and easily. Information is available in many venues, including user-generated Internet forums. Parenting forums are good places for information to spread quickly because of highly dedicated readership and personal connections made on the forums between parents.
