NATIONAL COMMITTEE ACTIVITIES AND FUNDING: In 2012 two meetings of the Austrian National Committee for MAB took place. The managers of the Austrian biosphere reserves (BRs) joined the meetings and reported about activities in their area and discussed future research strategies with the committee members. One of the meetings was held as a two-day event in the Biosphere Reserve “Großes Walsertal” including consultations with high-level politicians stake-holder and inspections of community projects. For the year 2012 the total funding for MAB, provided by the Austrian Ministry for Science and Research, was EURO 150.000,- = US$ 195.276,-1 1 Exchange rate per 04/03/2013 This funding was entirely used for research projects. 2. FUNDING CONTRIBUTION TO UNESCO MAB Young Scientist Awards: In response to the need expressed by the MAB International Co-ordinating Council (MAB-ICC) regarding mobilization of extra-budgetary funding in context of the MAB Young Scientist Award Scheme, particularly to raise the number of awards the Austrian National Committee for MAB decided to contribute the amount of US$ 10,000 to finance two additional MAB Young Scientists Research Awards for the year 2012. -

This situation has made the search for a single Austro-Hungarian identity so difficult that many historians have declared it impossible. Yet the Dual Monarchy possessed one potentially unifying cultural aspect that has long been critically neglected: the extensive repertoire of marches and patriotic music performed by the military bands of the Imperial and Royal Austro- Hungarian Army. This Militärmusik actively blended idioms representing the various nationalist musics from around the empire in an attempt to reflect and even celebrate its multinational makeup. -

WEINKULTUR STADTBILDWIEN WEINKULTUR STADTBILD WIEN WEINBAU IN WIEN Als einzige Großstadt der Welt verfügt Wien über ökonomisch bedeutenden Weinbau innerhalb der Stadtgrenzen. Der Weinbau trägt wesentlich zur kulturellen Identität Wiens bei und ist ein wichtiger Wirtschaftsfaktor. Die alten Weinorte prägen darüber hinaus auch das unverwechselbare Landschaftsbild dieser Stadt. In dieser Broschüre stehen die stadtplanerischen Aspekte des Wiener Weinbaus im Zentrum. Der Folder bietet einen Überblick darüber, mit welchen Instrumenten die wertvollen Weinbaugebiete gesichert werden können und welchen Spielraum bzw. welche Möglichkeiten die Stadtplanung dabei hat. Der Weinbau reicht zurück in die Zeit der Illyrer und Kelten, doch erst die Römer führten professionelle Methoden des Anbaues und der Kelterung ein. Da Wien im Einflussbereich des pannonischen Klimas liegt, sind die Bedingungen für den Weinbau ideal. Denn der Weinbau ist nur in jenen Gebieten möglich, in denen die mittlere Jahrestemperatur zwischen +9 und +21 Grad liegt. Ein zeitiges Frühjahr, ein warmer, trockener Sommer und ein milder, trockener Herbst sind nötig. Bei Frühjahrs- und Herbstfrösten ist Weinbau unrentabel, selbst wenn der Sommer warm ist. Die Vegetationsdauer der Weinkulturen liegt zwischen 180 und 200 Tagen. Die Weinbaufläche Wiens beträgt insgesamt ca. 700 ha, wobei etwa 80 % Weißwein- und 20 % Rotweinsorten angepflanzt sind. FACTSHEET: Living in Vienna Geography & history Vienna is a typical central European capital with approx. 1, 7 Million inhabitants living on approx. 400 km2 of space, which expands over from its Northern to its Southern limits over a distance of approx. 22km and from East to West over approx. 30 km. Vienna is a very hilly town, which is proven by the difference in height between the lowest point of the city at the banks of the river Danube near the cities eastern limits with 151 meters above Adriatic sea level and the highest point within the town, the peak of the “Hermannskogel” - mountain with 542 meters. Due to the circle of woodland enclosing Vienna nearly completely, and the huge green parks which can be found even near the inner city, one might get the impression that the town isn´t populated very tightly. Looking at its average population density of „only“ approx. 4.000.- inhabitants by km2 (compared to e.g. Paris with nearly 25.000 people / km2) this might sound right, but if you look at the figures of certain districts, the impression will change significantly. In Vienna´s currently very trendy 8 th district (Josefstadt) for example, 22.000 inhabitants / square meter already live together quite closely. Today´s splitting of the city into 23 municipal districts mainly results of its development throughout the centuries. The first human remains having been found in the city date back to the Paleolithic age, but one can only safely speak of the foundation of a real “city” from roman times onwards, precisely from the foundation of the roman army-camp “Vindobona” and its connected civilian town in the first century after Christ.
