The mayors share a laugh by Brian Johnson ward-winning filmmaker Rusty Farst invited 13 former Sanibel mayors to gather at The Community House Aon March 22 to talk about the 1974 incorporation of Sanibel. The distinguished group included Sanibel’s first mayor Porter Goss, who went on to become CIA Director under President Bush, island icon Francis Bailey, and current mayor Mick Denham. Their comments served as kick-off to the production of Sanibel Inc., a documentary that will capture the events leading up to the historic vote for incorporation on November 5, 1973. The mayors were delighted to get together for the discussion of Sanibel history, as many noted in their remarks; it was the first Nola Theiss, Steve Brown, Jerry Muench, Porter Goss, Carla Brooks Johnston, Wally Kain time so many had been together in one place. Entertainment With greatly appreciated help from Anne Joffe, past Shell Club president and cur- rent shell chairmen, Jeff Oths, club vice president, announced that James M. Wedge will make a presentation entitled Micronesia, Life on a Coral Reef. The discussion will include images of the various forms of marine life found around a coral reef in the tropical Pacific. The show will include many photos of live shells as well as other color- ful fish and invertebrate life. Wedge’s interest in nature photography began as a SCUBA diver while living with his family in the Marshall Islands where he worked as an engineer on U.S. Government defense projects. He spent 12 years photographing the various fish, corals and invertebrate life of the coral reefs of the Pacific. After returning to the U.S., he continued his focus on nature by photographing wildflowers, butterflies, amphibians and birds. Over the years he has given slide presentations to various SCUBA clubs, malacological groups, nature clubs and natural science groups. In addition, he has frequently given presentations to camera clubs as well as acting as a judge for many photographic competitions. His bird images are currently marketed by the Academy of Science in Philadelphia. Wedge’s photographic credits include a 5 Star rating in the Nature Division of the Photographic Society of America (PSA) with over 140 nature photos accepted for dis- play in the international photography salons. Wedge has also been published in several 2240 Periwinkle Way magazines such as Oceans, Sea Frontiers, Smithsonian, and National Wildlife. Yet stormwater run- off full of chemicals from agricultural opera- tions and fertilized landscapes is allowed to drain untreated into local waters. Overflow from sewage and septic systems fouls local water. Dangerous algae outbreaks plague Florida’s beaches, lakes, rivers, and estuar- ies, killing wildlife and closing swimming areas. According to Valiquette, “The Lee County basin is being assaulted by sewer outlets dumping beyond allowable levels and by storm water runoff.” Mike Valiquette Believing that only educated citizens can make a difference, PURRE is sharing with the citizens of Southwest Florida the current state of local water quality through presentations and media releases. Ginny (Kim Morgan Dean) and Greg (Jason Parrish) are a young couple in love. Ginny has had an affair with a much older married man. Greg is jealous; she says, “Trust me.” Greg is a gentle, sweet soul and Ginny realizes he is the man she wants to marry. Halder’s journey from simple man to villain is a poignant, witty, and sometimes surreal expedition into ethical marshes that begs the question: what is good? And how can good men do evil things?
