The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, July 1, 2020 * The Boston Globe College lefties drafted by Red Sox have small sample sizes but big hopes Julian McWilliams There was natural anxiety for players entering this year’s Major League Baseball draft. Their 2020 high school or college seasons had been cut short or canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They lost that chance at increasing their individual stock, and furthermore, the draft had been reduced to just five rounds. Lefthanders Shane Drohan and Jeremy Wu-Yelland felt some of that anxiety. The two were in their junior years of college. Drohan attended Florida State and Wu-Yelland played at the University of Hawaii. There was a chance both could have gone undrafted and thus would have been tasked with the tough decision of signing a free agent deal capped at $20,000 or returning to school for their senior year. “I didn’t know if I was going to get drafted,” Wu-Yelland said in a phone interview. “My agent was kind of telling me that it might happen, it might not. Just be ready for anything.” Said Drohan, “I knew the scouting report on me was I have the stuff to shoot up on draft boards but I haven’t really put it together yet. I felt like I was doing that this year and then once [the season] got shut down, that definitely played into the stress of it, like, ‘Did I show enough?’ ” As it turned out, both players showed enough. The Red Sox selected Wu-Yelland in the fourth round and Drohan in the fifth. -

Castrovince | October 23Rd, 2016 CLEVELAND -- the Baseball Season Ends with Someone Else Celebrating
C's the day before: Chicago, Cleveland ready By Anthony Castrovince / MLB.com | @castrovince | October 23rd, 2016 CLEVELAND -- The baseball season ends with someone else celebrating. That's just how it is for fans of the Indians and Cubs. And then winter begins, and, to paraphrase the great meteorologist Phil Connors from "Groundhog Day," it is cold, it is gray and it lasts the rest of your life. The city of Cleveland has had 68 of those salt-spreading, ice-chopping, snow-shoveling winters between Tribe titles, while Chicagoans with an affinity for the North Siders have all been biding their time in the wintry winds since, in all probability, well before birth. Remarkably, it's been 108 years since the Cubs were last on top of the baseball world. So if patience is a virtue, the Cubs and Tribe are as virtuous as they come. And the 2016 World Series that arrives with Monday's Media Day - - the pinch-us, we're-really-here appetizer to Tuesday's intensely anticipated Game 1 at Progressive Field -- is one pitting fan bases of shared circumstances and sentiments against each other. These are two cities, separated by just 350 miles, on the Great Lakes with no great shakes in the realm of baseball background, and that has instilled in their people a common and eventually unmet refrain of "Why not us?" But for one of them, the tide will soon turn and so, too, will the response: "Really? Us?" Yes, you. Imagine what that would feel like for Norman Rosen. He's 90 years old and wise to the patience required of Cubs fandom. -
Corporate Social Responsibility in Professional Sports: an Analysis of the NBA, NFL, and MLB
Corporate Social Responsibility in Professional Sports: An Analysis of the NBA, NFL, and MLB Richard A. McGowan, S.J. John F. Mahon Boston College University of Maine Chestnut Hill, MA, USA Orono, Maine, USA [email protected] [email protected] Abstract Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an area of organizational study with the potential to dramatically change lives and improve communities across the globe. CSR is a topic with extensive research in regards to traditional corporations; yet, little has been conducted in relation to the professional sports industry. Although most researchers and professionals have accepted CSR has a necessary component in evaluating a firm‟s performance, there is a great deal of variation in how it should be applied and by whom. Professional sports franchises are particularly interesting, because unlike most corporations, their financial success depends almost entirely on community support for the team. This paper employs a mixed-methods approach for examining CSR through the lens of the professional sports industry. The study explores how three professional sports leagues, the National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Football Association (NFL), and Major League Baseball (MLB), engage in CSR activities and evaluates the factors that influence their involvement. Quantitative statistical analysis will include and qualitative interviews, polls, and surveys are the basis for the conclusions drawn. Some of the hypotheses that will be tested include: Main Research Question/Focus: How do sports franchises
