Ms Coll\Dr.Mus. Dramatic Museum. Papers, 1732-1995. 18 Linear Ft Ms Coll\Dr.Mus. Dramatic Museum. Papers, 1732-1995. 18 linear ft (ca.4,500 items in 29 boxes, 2 flat folders, & 3 cartons). Historical note: Columbia University's Brander Matthews Dramatic Museum, 1910-1971, collected materials of a theatrical interest. Summary: A collection of letters, manuscripts, and documents of prominent actors, actresses, and theatrical managers. Many of these are single, unrelated items. The largest body of correspondence is from the American actress, Charlotte Cushman (14 letters). Another figure of major interest is William Charles Macready, partly because of Miss Cushman's relationship to him (she toured with him for several years) and also as there are several of his letters. Sir Henry Irving, Edwin Forrest and James Mowart are each represented by a few letters. A group of 8 unsigned letters may have been written by the famous singer, actress, and manager, Eliza Vestris. There are also 30 letters, etc. to and from Mr and Mrs Richard Mansfield. Three boxes contains manuscripts of Samuel Coit, Charlotte Cushman, Clyde Fitch, Wallace Gould, Henry von Heiseler, Arthur Morrison, Richard Shapiro, E.H. Sothern, and Lester Wallack. Six boxes contain Augustin Daly's check stubs and bank books for Daly's Theatre, New York, for 1872-1899. (For additional Augustin Daly business records, see description sheets for Daly's Theatre Collection, X810.128/D15, & the Dramatic Library Collection shelf list). GEOFFROY: 86 letters removed from the Charles Michel Geoffroy, Nouvelle Galerie des Artistes Dramatiques, which contains his engravings of theatrical personalities. 15 of these letters are to Leon Monval, stage director of the Paris Gymnase Dramatique, 1832-1852, and were transferred to the Dramatic Museum\Monval Collection This is a collection of letters, 1828-1892, from performers, authors, directors, and those seeking boxes for the evening's entertainment. Among these are Jacques Offenbach, Pauline Viardot, Delestre Poirson, Marguerite George, Mile Person, Rachel Felix, and Edouard Plouvier. GILBERT: Misc. autographs and photographs collected by Anne J. Gilbert (Mrs George Henry). IRELAND: 494 autograph letters, manuscripts, and documents concerning the New York and London theater world, 1750-1899, from Ireland's own collection, which were bound in William Hartman Woodin's extra- illustrated copy of Ireland's Records of the New York Stage. The other items bound in this set (portraits, original drawings, playbills, views of theaters and localities referred to) are still bound in the set (in the Dramatic Museum book collection). MONVAL: 315 letters to Leon Monval (see also GEOFFROY above). MOORE: 8 letters & telegrams, along with photographs, clippings, programs, and other printed materials relating to the American operatic and film star, Grace Moore, collected by June Lord-Wood, an admirer and music student. The majority of the material documents the 19th century. This collection is divided into seven series: Portrait file; Subject file; Program file; Scrapbook file; Playbill file; Poster file; and Lantern slides file. Included are many prints and photographs of scenes from plays. There are extensive files on Shakespeare and Moliere. The programs included are a selective group of twentieth century programs filed under playwright, producer, composer or other important person connected with a production. They are chiefly for the New York stage and to a lesser extent for other northeastern U. S. cities. In addition there is a selective group of late 19th and early American and English souvenir programs, (ca. 15,000 items).     Gordon 1 Jessica Gordon 29 March 2010 Honors Thesis Everything was Beautiful at the Ballet: The Evolution of Musical Theatre Dance During the mid-1860s, a ballet troupe from Paris was brought to the Academy of Music in lower Manhattan. Before the company’s first performance, however, the theatre in which they were to dance was destroyed in a fire. Nearby, producer William Wheatley was preparing to begin performances of The Black Crook, a melodrama with music by Charles M. Barras. Seeing an opportunity, Wheatley conceived the idea to combine his play and the displaced dance company, mixing drama and spectacle on one stage. On September 12, 1866, The Black Crook opened at Niblo’s Gardens and was an immediate sensation. Wheatley had unknowingly created a new American art form that would become a tradition for years to come. Since the first performance of The Black Crook, dance has played an important role in musical theatre. From the dream ballet in Oklahoma to the “Dance at the Gym” in West Side Story to modern shows such as Movin’ Out, dance has helped tell stories and engage audiences throughout musical theatre history. Dance has not always been as integrated in musicals as it tends to be today. I plan to examine the moments in history during which the role of dance on the Broadway stage changed and how those changes affected the manner in which dance is used on stage today. Additionally, I will discuss the important choreographers who have helped develop the musical theatre dance styles and traditions. As previously mentioned, theatrical dance in America began with the integration of European classical ballet and American melodrama.

    Ms Coll\Wheeler, R. Wheeler, Roger, collector. Theatrical memorabilia, 1770-1940. 15 linear ft. (ca. 12,800 items in 32 boxes). Biography: Proprietor of Rare Old Programs, Newtonville, Mass. Summary: Theatrical memorabilia such as programs, playbills, photographs, engravings, and prints. Although there are some playbills as early as 1770, most of the material is from the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition to plays there is some material relating to concerts, operettas, musical comedies, musical revues, and movies. The majority of the collection centers around Shakespeare. Included with an unbound copy of each play (The Edinburgh Shakespeare Folio Edition) there are portraits, engravings, and photographs of actors in their roles; playbills; programs; cast lists; other types of illustrative material; reviews of various productions; and other printed material. Such well known names as George Arliss, Sarah Bernhardt, the Booths, John Drew, the Barrymores, and William Gillette are included in this collection. Organization: Arranged.
