BIX BEIDERBECKE a Cura Di Paolo Piccardo Oggi parliamo di: BIX BEIDERBECKE A cura di Paolo Piccardo Davenport, 10.03.1903 – New York, 06.08.1931. Tragica la storia di questo giovane cornettista e pianista, divenuto ormai un mito per tutti gli appassionati del Jazz delle origini. La sua breve parabola, durata meno di 7 anni, ha lasciato il segno in tutta la storia della Musica Popolare Americana fino ai giorni nostri. Tuttora si svolgono festival Jazz a lui dedicati, orchestre ripropongono il suo repertorio e si contano vari films, tra cui uno italiano, che ripercorrono il suo mito. Bix, nato Leon Bismark Beiderbecke in una famiglia benestante di origini tedesche, apprende prestissimo a suonare il pianoforte (ed alcuni dei suoi pezzi più memorabili sono composti per questo strumento), ma fin dall’infanzia dimostra irrequietezza ed instabilità. Imparerà infatti a leggere la musica scritta molto tardi. Si appassiona al jazz delle origini ascoltando le orchestrine che si esibivano sui battelli a vapore del Mississippi, in particolare la Original Dixieland Jazz Band di Nick La Rocca, la cui musica avrà su di lui una profonda influenza. Impara a suonare la cornetta da autodidatta, utilizzando una diteggiatura non convenzionale a cui molti 2 attribuiscono la peculiarità del suo suono, assolutamente unico. Inizia la professione osteggiato dalla famiglia con le orchestra dei “Wolverines” nel Febbraio 1924, rivelando da subito un genio particolare per il fraseggio, sempre “intellettuale” e ricco di sfumature, profondamente introspettive, completamente all’opposto dell’altro astro nascente della cornetta, Louis Armstrong, fin da allora solare ed espansivo. In seguito passa nell’orchestra di Jean Goldkette, con la quale incide molte facciate per la Victor. Contemporaneamente si esibisce con un gruppo ristretto, diretto dall’amico di sempre Frank Trumbauer, suonatore di C Melody Sax, con il quale il giovane cornettista produce i suoi migliori assoli. Nell’Ottobre 1927 i due amici vengono assunti nell’orchestra del celebre Paul Whiteman, autodefinitosi il “Re del Jazz”, primo esecutore della Rhapsody in Blue di George Gershwin. In questo periodo Bix alterna prestazioni eccelse a momenti meno elevati, a causa del suo persistente etilismo. Nel novembre 1928 un attacco di delirium tremens lo lascia prostrato e lo allontana per qualche tempo dalla band, che lascerà ostentatamente la sua sedia vuota durante i concerti. Si riprende abbastanza per ricominciare l’attività ma una sera dell’Ottobre 1930, alzandosi per eseguire un solo subisce un vuoto di memoria e rimane in silenzio. Un suo collega di sezione salva la situazione intervenendo con la sua tromba. Whiteman a malincuore decide di lasciarlo libero per potersi curare. La sera del 6 Agosto 1931 una crisi polmonare si porta via il più brillante musicista dei suoi tempi . Introduction “Dinah,” published in 1925, was one of the leading hit songs to emerge from New York City’s “Tin Pan Alley” music industry during the interwar period, and was recorded in the U.S. by numerous singers and dance bands during the late 1920s and 1930s. It was also one of the most popular songs of the 1930s in Japan, where Japanese composers, arrangers, lyricists and performers, inspired in part by U.S. records, developed and recorded their own versions. In this paper I examine and compare a selection of the American and Japanese recordings of this song with the aim of tracing lines ─ 155 ─ 愛知県立大学外国語学部紀要第43号(言語・文学編) of influence, focusing on the aural evidence of the recordings themselves in relation to their recording and release dates. The analysis will show how American recordings of the song, which resulted from complex interactions of African American and European American artists and musical styles, established certain loose conventions of performance practices that were conveyed to Japan and to Japanese artists. It will then show how these Japanese artists made flexible use of American precedents, while also drawing influences from other Japanese recordings and adding their own individual creative ideas.

    Bix Beiderbecke Leon Bismark Beiderbecke was an American jazz cornetist, jazz pianist, and composer. Born March 10, 1903 Davenport, Iowa, US Died August 6, 1931 (aged 28) Years active 1924–1931 Labels Columbia/SME Records With Louis Armstrong and Muggsy Spanier, Beiderbecke was one of the most influential jazz soloists of the 1920s. His turns on "Singin' the Blues" and "I'm Coming, Virginia" (both 1927), in particular, demonstrated an unusual purity of tone and a gift for improvisation. With these two recordings, especially, he helped to invent the jazz ballad style and hinted at what, in the 1950s, would become cool jazz. "In a Mist" (1927), one of a handful of his piano compositions and one of only two he recorded, mixed classical (Impressionist) influences with jazz syncopation. A native of Davenport, Iowa, Beiderbecke taught himself to play cornet largely by ear, leading him to adopt a non-standard fingering some critics have connected to his original sound. The band was one of the most popular in the world by then and to feature Whiteman in an all talking musical picture built around his band simply had to be done. Made up of Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks, and Annie Ross, they were the only interracial and mixed gender vocal jazz group in the United States in the late 1950s. In the wake of the Montgomery bus boycott victory and President Eisenhower’s consideration of the Equal Rights Act, the trio became one of the most popular vocal jazz groups of the day by singing lyricized arrangements of famous instrumental jazz recordings through a medium called vocalese.     Bemerkungen zu „King of Jazz“ Erscheinungsjahr: 1930 Regisseur: John Murray Anderson Darsteller: Paul Whiteman Orchestra, John Boles, Rhythm Boys mit Bing Crosby, Charles Irwin, Laura La Plante. Paul Whiteman (* 28. März 1890 in Denver, Colorado; † 29. Dezember 1967 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania) war ein amerikanischer Bandleader. Whiteman war ausgebildeter Geiger, der zunächst in verschiedenen Orchestern arbeitete. Danach gründete er eigene Big-Bands und Orchester. Beispielsweise nahm er 1920 Engagements in Atlantic City und New York an und ging 1923 mit dem Orchester auf Europa-Tournee. Sein Sound wird auch als Symphonic Jazz bezeichnet, da er klassische Musik und Musicals mit Jazz koppelte. Bekanntestes Beispiel für den Symphonic Jazz ist die „Rhapsody in Blue“, die er bei George Gershwin in Auftrag gab und 12. Februar 1924 in der Aeolian Hall in New York uraufführte. Sein Orchester hatte Besetzungen, die von zwanzig bis neunzig Musikern reichte, was für den Jazz sehr ungewöhnlich ist. Zu seinen Orchestern gehörte eine Reihe von weißen Starjazzern der damaligen Zeit. Dazu gehören insbesondere Jack Teagarden (Posaune), Frank Trumbauer (Saxophon), Bunny Berigan (Violine, Trompete), Joe Venuti (Violine), Eddie Lang (Gitarre), die Gebrüder Tommy Dorsey (Posaune) und Jimmy Dorsey (Saxophon, Klarinette) sowie Bix Beiderbecke (Trompete, Kornett) und der Sänger Bing Crosby. 1930 erschien dann der Film „King of Jazz“, der thematisch locker angelehnt auf seinen Memoiren aufsetzte. Filmplakat zu „King of Jazz“ Filminhalt: Der Film beginnt mit einer Einführung des Ansagers Charles Irwin, der vor einem überdimensionalen Buch steht (als Zeichenblock im Film bezeichnet), das die Melodien und Lebensgeschichte von Paul Whiteman enthalten soll. Mit einem Cartoon, der von dem Walter Lantz (späterer Zeichner und Trickfilmer für die Gestalt „Woody Woodpecker“) entwickelt wurde, beginnt die Vita des Bandleaders.
