Predator species have been introduced, and many of the predator stocks are maintained by stocking. The impact of these stocked fish on the forage base, and the ability of the forage base to sustain projected stocking levels are unknown. The most current information on fish populations in Lake Superior has been collected by biologists in three states, several tribes, the province of Ontario, and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Much of the information, however, is unpublished or in publications with limited distribution. Bioenergetics modeling can use basic population data for answering research and management questions about predator-prey dynamics, stocking quotas, and forage requirements. The objectives of this study were: 1) to compile data on the major salmonines in Minnesota waters of Lake Superior, as input for a bioenergetics model; 2) to estimate salmonine predation on prey populations in Minnesota waters through modeling simulations; 3) to conduct sensitivity analyses of the bioenergetics model; and 4) to prioritize data requirements for input to the bioenergetics model. Estimates of consumption by predator stocks in 1989 totaled 2,814 metric tonnes of rainbow smelt and 249 metric tonnes of coregonines, which greatly exceeded biomass plus production estimates of forage species (about 100 metric tonnes of rainbow smelt and 85 metric tonnes of coregonines). Discrepancies could be due to underestimates of forage fish biomass or inaccuracies in data on predators. Predator consumption estimates in the bioenergetics simulations were most influenced by values used for predator population abundance, weights, diets, and prey caloric densities. Further data acquisition should focus on the forage base biomass and production, predator age and growth, periodic diet monitoring, predator population abundances, and mortality rates.     VERNACULAR IN CURVES: THE MYTHOLOGIZING OF THE GREAT LAKES WHALEBACK by Joseph Thaddeus Lengieza April, 2016 Director of Thesis: Dr. Bradley Rodgers Major Department: Maritime Studies, History The “whaleback” type of bulk commodity freighter, indigenous to the Great Lakes of North America at the end of the nineteenth century, has engendered much notice for its novel appearance; however, this appearance masks the essential vernacularity of the vessel. Comparative disposition analysis reveals that whalebacks experienced longevity comparable to contemporary Great Lakes freighter of similar construction material and size, implying that popular narrative overstates whaleback abnormality. While the former provide pattern, the latter give texture. Objects that directly link people to historical events allow us to touch the past. Some are very personal connections between indi- viduals and their ancestors. Others are the touch- stones of our collective memory. Buried in the sand of Lake Superior is the USS ESSEX, an artifact of the nation’s maritime past. A mid- nineteenth-century sloop of war designed by one of America’s foremost naval architects, Donald McKay, the ESSEX traveled around the world and ultimately came to rest on Duluth’s Minnesota Point, about as far from the ocean as a vessel can get. The timbers of the SCOTT F. ANFINSON Scott Anfinson is the archaeologist for the Minnesota Historical Society’s State Historic Preservation Office. He received a Master’s degree in anthropology from the University of Nebraska in 1977 and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Minnesota in 1987. Besides directing the Minnesota Shipwreck Initiative, his research interests focus on the American Indian archaeology of southwestern Minnesota and the history of the Minneapolis riverfront.
