Nytt Album Fra Preoccupations Foto: Pooneh Ghana 22-01-2018 14:57 CET NYTT ALBUM FRA PREOCCUPATIONS NYTT ALBUM FRA PREOCCUPATIONS "NEW MATERIAL" SLIPPES 23. HØR FØRSTE SINGEL "ESPIONAGE" HER STREAM "ESPIONAGE" PÅ SPOTIFY HER Vokalist, låtskriver og bassist Matt Flegel forteller at albumet er "an ode to depression and self-sabotage". "Finishing 'Espionage' was when I realized, that I looked at the rest of the lyrics and saw the magnitude of what was wrong", forteller Flegel. Prosessen med å lage albumet var i større grad et samarbeidsprosjekt for bandet enn arbeidet med deres forrige, selvtitulerte plate som fikk 9/10 av The 405 og en solid 10/10 av Loud and Quiet. London In Stereo skrev den gangen at "The band's name has changed; their status as untouchable standard-bearers of modern post-punk excellence has not." Preoccupations er kjent for sine eksplosive konserter, og legger snart ut på en verdensturné som starter i USA til våren. Ingen datoer i Skandinavia er så langt bekreftet. Les mer om turnéen HER. "New Materials" slippes 23. mars 2018 via Jagjaguwar / Playground Music Scandinavia. "NEW MATERIAL" TRACKLIST: 1. Espionage 2. Decompose 3. Disarray 4. Manipulation 5. Antidote 6. Solace 7. Doubt 8. Album of the Week: Preoccupations – New Material New Material by Preoccupations Calgary post-punks Preoccupations have come a long way since changing their name from the controversial “Viet Cong” in 2015. Their 2016 album under their current name garnered a ton of positivity from critics and fans, and, in turn, brought them to the forefront of today’s post-punk and new wave scene. On Mar 23, they’ll be releasing their third album, titled New Material, via the indie label Jagjaguwar. The band shows artistic expansion in their new album while staying true to their distinct style. There’s a fine balance of synth and bass guitar providing the structure for a hypnotic sound. There’s a pulse throughout the entirety of New Material that runs like an engine in a hot rod. Matt Flegel’s vocals walk the fine line between low and high pitches, almost as if the qualities of both Ian Curtis and Morrissey’s singing were combined into one. The synth presence is more accentuated versus the band’s previous album due to Scott Munro’s techniques. Mike Wallace’s drumming is the spark that sets everything off. Munro and Daniel Christiansen unleash their guitars in stellar ways to complete the sonic arsenal. It’s always a breath of fresh air when you can notice a band’s influences through their music but the band isn’t a complete rip-off. Originality is just as important as embracing the past. Preoccupations pull that off by having an approach that harks back to the golden age of post-punk, and, at the same time, keeping things fresh.

2007/2017 | POST-PUNK Post-punk was never a sound. Or at least, it was way too many sounds to be boiled down to a single aesthetic. What tied those many sounds together was an adventurous, seeking spirit. It was music often made by young people, but it wasn’t youth music per se, striving for themes and sounds that were less ephemeral than most popular music. I’ve always thought of it as a flourishing that lasted from about 1978-1982 before passing the torch to other music (though a lot of post-punk and new wave musicians continued to do fantastic work). And that was that--the music continues to surprise and excite us, but it was finite. That understanding was recently massively shaken up, when I met Dave Cantrell, whose Songs From Under the Floorboard radio show on XRAY.fm and Out From The Shadows music festival in Portland, Oregon unabashedly use the term “post-punk” to refer to an active musical culture, with no qualifiers like “neo” or “revival” necessary. I was skeptical, sound unheard, expecting it to be a shallow exercise in aping the sounds of post- punk without engaging the animating spirit at its core. But Dave is an “original” post-punk, who was “there” in London, late 70s/early 80s, meeting the bands, experiencing post-punk first-hand as I never could (I was born in 1980) as a living culture. So if he felt so sure that this current-day “post-punk” needed no qualifiers, I had to give it a shot.

  • Album of the Week: Hop Along – <I>Bark Your Head Off, Dog</I
Album of the Week: Hop Along – Bark Your Head Off, Dog Bark Your Head Off, Dog by Hop Along Philadelphia indie rock act Hop Along has creative versatility beyond their contemporaries. The band amplifies the singer-songwriter aesthetic with powerful sounds glistening with genuineness. It’s a mix of folk, ‘90s alternative, punk and power-pop that soothes the senses. Their fourth album Bark Your Head Off, Dog came out on Apr 6 via Saddle Creek Records and is a testament to their musical evolution. There’s a certain fearlessness in each song. What makes this album different from Hop Along’s previous releases is the involvement of string instruments. The violin throughout the album is a fantastic addition. Frances Quinlan’s vocals combine with guest backing vocalist Chrissy Tashjian (from fellow Philly act Thin Lips) for amazing harmonies. Frances’ brother Mark is the anchor on drums while Joe Reinhart provides perfect chords on lead guitar. Bass guitarist Tyler Long keeps it all together with solid bass lines backing everything up. Usually when a band shifts towards acoustic instruments, a drop-off in emphasis is expected. Hop Along maintains their trademark intensity in their new album, proof of how talented they are. There’s also a fine balance between the electric guitar riffing and the stripped-down tones. The variety of volumes makes for a captivating listening experience. For further examination, give a gander to my top tracks off of the Album of the Week: “Prior Things” is a gem that’s also a prime example of the string instruments’ resonance; the violin gives a dose of artistic beauty while Quinlan’s lyrical melodies are stunning.

University of Nevada, Reno Rebellious Jukebox: Post-Punk’s Disruption of Rock’s Musical and Social Hierarchies A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music by Bradley C. Bynum Dr. Louis Niebur/Thesis Advisor May, 2020 Copyright by Bradley C. Bynum, 2020. All rights reserved. THE GRADUATE SCHOOL We recommend that the thesis prepared under our supervision by entitled be accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Advisor Committee Member Graduate School Representative David W. Zeh, Ph.D., Dean Graduate School i Abstract This project explores British post-punk music of the late 1970s. It examines the subtle and explicit ways post-punk musicians adopted ideas from concurrent black American genres, and how those ideas disrupted rock’s traditional musical and social hierarchies. This project examines the work of four key British post-punk groups: Public Image Limited, Gang of Four, the Fall, and the Slits. Post-punk is linked to its immediate antecedent, punk, but an important difference is that post-punk bands were eager to embrace techniques and songwriting approaches from black genres, like disco, funk, and reggae. By incorporating composition, arrangement, and instrumentation practices from those genres, post-punk bands were able to write music that emphasized the rhythm sections, bassists and drummers, equally with vocalists and guitarists. These musical arrangements resonated with the egalitarian lyrical rhetoric of the punk aesthetic and allowed cultural space for new subjectivities within the previously codified realm of rock music. ii Table of Contents Page Abstract i Table of Contents ii List of Figures iii Chapter 1.
