Th is paper presents the (un)sustainable rural tourism practice in Lika-Senj County in Croatia through a case study of the Linden Tree Retreat & Ranch and Plitvice Lakes. In order to understand the concepts of sustainable rural tourism, overtourism and undertourism, the case study begins with an analysis of statistical data, secondary literature and examples of overtourism in Lika (Plitvice Lakes Nati- onal Park). Qualitative insight (preliminary data) is used to refl ect on the Linden Tree Retreat & Ranch campaign called CIDER (Community, Integrity, Development, Evolution and Responsibility), which can be considered as the point of departure for the enhancement of undertourism development. Keywords: neo-endogenous development, overtourism, sustainable tourism, undertourism 1. INTRODUCTION1 Tourism is one of the most important social phenomena of the 20th and 21st centuries.

  • Map 20 Pannonia-Dalmatia Compiled by P. Kos and M. Šašel Kos, 1995
Map 20 Pannonia-Dalmatia Compiled by P. Kos and M. Šašel Kos, 1995 Introduction The map covers very heterogeneous landscapes ranging from the Adriatic coast to the Alps, and from the mountainous interiors of the provinces of Dalmatia and Pannonia with their rich ore sources to the Pannonian plain. The current state of research–to some degree reflected by the map–is uneven. Thus the Carinthian province of Austria (Piccottini 1989), Slovenia (ANSl 1975), and Bosnia and Herzegovina (ALBiH) are better explored topographically than other regions where no compilations of archaeological sites have been published. The results of topographical research conducted over the past thirty years by Bojanovski (1988) are of great importance. Much antiquarian and topographic information has been collected for Histria and Venetia by Vedaldi Iasbez (1994), with particular attention to Greek and Latin writers. Similarly substantial collection and assessment of data for the Dalmatian coast and islands are provided by Kozličić (1990). TIR Tergeste (1961), TIR Aquincum (1968) and TIR Naissus (1976) are also of value for the areas they cover, though not always reliable. Mócsy’s work (RE Suppl. 9 Pannonia) remains fundamental for the province of Pannonia. As Kozličić (1986) has shown, since antiquity geomorphological changes along the Dalmatian and Istrian coasts have been minimal, if only because no very large rivers flow into the Adriatic; the map therefore retains the modern coastline. The coast of the eastern Adriatic is, however, sinking at a minimal rate annually (Šegota 1976). Geographic names by no means always appear in the nominative in the Greek and Latin sources; the point applies especially to ItAnt, ItBurd, TabPeut and GeogRav, which often represent the only evidence.

  • Budget Transparency in Croatian Counties, Cities and Municipalities (November 2016-March 2017)1
NEWSLETTER Zagreb l Smičiklasova 21 doi: 10.3326/nle.2017.112 [email protected] l www.ijf.hr l tel: +385(0)1 4886 444 No. 112 l July 2017 l ISSN 1848-4662 Budget transparency in Croatian counties, cities and municipalities (November 2016-March 2017)1 KATARINA OTT, MIHAELA BRONIĆ, MIROSLAV PETRUŠIĆ, BRANKO STANIĆ The overall average level of budget transparency in Croatian local government units, measured by the number of budget documents published on their respective official websites, has improved year by year. In the current research cycle, it averages 3.1 (the maximum rank is 5), with counties already being very transparent (4.6 on average), cities fairly good (3.7 on average), but municipalities still inadequately transparent (2.8 on average). Despite the relatively solid averages, there are too many extremely non-transparent local government units. Four cities (Gospić, Imotski, Valpovo and Vrgorac) and as many as 39 municipalities have not published a single budget document that we were searching for, and another seven cities and 50 municipalities have published only one such document each. As in previous years, the most transparent local government units include very sparsely populated ones, such as Ribnik and Dekanovec, and local government units with low per capita income (e.g. Jarmina and Đelekovec). On the other hand, among the least transparent local government units there are units with very high total and per capita budget revenues (e.g. Sutivan, Šolta, Dugopolje and Bol). Detailed results for all counties, cities and municipalities are given later in the text and are also available on the interactive map and in the Excel table.

  • The Political and Military Situation Before the Medak Pocket Operation
The Political and Military Situation Before the Medak Pocket Operation After the sudden - and for the Krajina Serbs, their army, UNPRO- %OR and the international community - unexpected success of the Croatian Army and police in executing the occupied area libera- tion of the Maslenica Operation, a change in the military and political leadership of the so-called Republika Srpska Krajina (RSK) behaviour was expected. The Croatian leadership was of the opinion that after the Krajina action, politicians would be more prone to negotiate and they would accept the relevant UN docu- ments. All of these documents unequivocally recognized Croatian sovereignty over the occupied areas and asked for their peaceful return under the Croatian constitutional and legal system. The desperate Serb resistance during the Rovanjska, Mali Alan, Tulove Grede, Velika and Mala Bobija, Maslenica, Novigrad, Kaiæ and Zemunik battles, their fierce counter-attack when the reinforce- ment troops arrived from Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina95 this counter-attack was for the first time prevented by the Croatian Armys vertical manoeuvre96, its soldiers and officers combat readiness and bravery that Serb resistance has shown that the force and the Serbian armys morale, though cracked, was still high and their perseverance on their independence and paras- tatehood was still abiding. The Krajina Serbs attributed their defeat in the Maslenica Operation to UN treason97, to surprise, and to their own relaxed attitude. The Serb military leadership claimed their defeat had been caused by a number of unfortunate coincidences.98 In order to somehow calm down the Krajina Serbs revolt: military com- manders claim to have prevented a large scale Croat offensive, that the military balance still held in their favour, and that Croatian 49 military forces did not pose any danger to the existence of the RSK.99 %R Yugoslavia still provided them with significant financial and military aid.

  • A Case Study of the Street Names in Two Neighboring Croatian Regions Ivana Crljenko
ONOMÀSTICA BIBLIOTECA TÈCNICA DE POLÍTICA LINGÜÍSTICA Representations of Regional Identity: A Case Study of the Street Names in Two Neighboring Croatian Regions Ivana Crljenko DOI: 10.2436/15.8040.01.184 Abstract In the northwestern part of the Croatian littoral two regions can be identified. The first one occupies the largest Croatian peninsula (Istria), and the second one is the neighboring region of the Kvarner Bay area, which stretches to the east and southeast of Istria. Although both are small in size (Istria 2950 km2, the Kvarner Bay 3270 km2), these regions had different historical developments, which is the major reason for different notions and expressions of regional identity. In that context, Istria is the most regionally oriented part of Croatia, where 4.3% of the total population identified themselves in the sense of regional affiliation (according to the 2001 census data). It is also a part of Croatia that has been exposed to Italian influence during a long period in history, as well as today. Effects of such a historical background can be identified in many ways in everyday life: in using the Italian language in some parts of Istria as the first or the second language, as well as in the greater significance of the local regional party, but also in the urban landscape – in street names (which are bilingual in some, but not all, parts of Istria). The Kvarner Bay region recorded only 0.05% of the total population that claimed regional affiliation: national identity is deeply expressed in supporting national political parties and in the urban toponymy.
