:::::: Pum Pum Rule Jamaican Dance: An Analytic Response to the Inability to Recognize Female Sovereignty in Dancehall Leslie-Ann Fullerton “All I want to be is a Jamaican Dancehall Queen. If this is not possible, I will be satisfied writing about women in Jamaican dancehall.” - Leslie-Ann Fullerton. Leslie-Ann Fullerton was born and raised in a Christian home in Jamaica. She later became a dedicated lover and participant of Jamaican dancehall as a dancehall “mogela” [model], which played an instrumental role in informing this essay. Leslie-Ann is currently a 4th year student at the University of Toronto pursuing a double major in Caribbean Studies and Political Science. She was the 2012-2013 president and is currently the 2013-2014 Co-President of CARSSU. In reading this essay, Leslie-Ann hopes that the reader takes the advice of Chimamanda Adichie and beware of “The Dangers of Telling a Single Story” about a people and its culture. She implores the reader to look at women in Jamaican dancehall from a positive perspective. Jamaican music has had a close relationship with expressing the island’s various socio-economic and political stages. In Chude- Sokeis’s work, POST-NATIONALIS GEORGRAPHIES: Rasta, Reggae, and Reinventing Africa,1 the author traces Jamaica’s societal changes through music. This includes analyzing the relationship between post-nationalism, Rastafarianism, Dancehall, and women response to these phenomenon. Particularly, the emergence of dancehall introduced a rise African women participating in overt sexual expressions that was considered indecent. In this light, dancehall was rejected by the “ideological underpinnings of the elite culture”2 and their desires to mold nationalism in Jamaica into a replica of European model. -

In the song, Garlin chastises those who participate in such acts, while celebrating those who abstain by maintaining their ―dignity‖: You know life is like a car and dignity is the clutch And some people love automatic and don‘t want to clutch too much You know they have no dignity no integrity no purity they have no kind of sanity Jeezanages all they dealing with is profanity Hand up so! If yuh never sell yuh body just to make some money hands up lemme see Hand up so! Tru you never sell out your soul neither lend out your hole to achieve piece of gold hand up so! Tru you keep your dignity your pride and integrity well hands up lemme see 2 hand up so! (2003b) The Caribbean has a long history of the sexualization and commodification of bodies, from the exploitation, enslavement, brutalization, fear of, and fascination with, Indigenous people by the Spanish, through the centuries of brutality enacted on African, Asian and mixed race bodies by the colonizers during the eras of slavery and indentureship, onto the present day where we find increases in the levels of tourism (including sex tourism), sexual violence and alarming rates of HIV infection (Kempadoo 2004; Sheller 2003; UNAIDS 2006). -

This Essay is based on my presentation to the plenary panel on Literature and the Arts as Antisubordination Praxis. I would like to thank the organizers of LatCrit IV for inviting me to participate at the conference. I also would like to particularly thank Elizabeth Iglesias and Frank Valdes for their support and insight in the preparation of my presentation. SUMMARY: ... Gang violence in Jamaica has its origins in the "rude boy" culture that emerged during the 1960s. This brings us to the rude boy phenomenon, the next context in which music serves as antisubordination praxis. ... The rude boy phenomenon was a product of the socioeconomic conditions facing urban youths during the years following Independence, 1962 to the present. ... " Yet, Dreader than Dread shows that Jamaican music does not always serve as antisubordination praxis, for the song glorifies the rude boy and promotes violence, a subordinating force in society. ... To this day, rude boy culture still flourishes as its origins such as high unemployment and feelings of marginalization and hopelessness among Jamaican youths, have yet to be remedied. As a result, the rude boy remains a popular theme in Jamaican music as some musicians continue to condemn rude boys, while others glorify guns and gangster culture in much the same way as the gangster rappers of the United States. -

I center the local institution of the “street dance” as the heart of Jamaicans’ musical practices. Grounded in a historical analysis of musicking – the active practice of engaging with music – in Jamaica and in the Jamaican diaspora, this study reveals how Jamaica’s colonial past and present shapes musicking’s cultural, political and economic significance in Jamaican life. Most specifically, Jamaican music-makers’ collaborative and repetitive practices, that draw on and reinforce shared cultural history, contradict current local and international copyright law. Copyright law relies on historically and culturally specific
