With art that is both fanciful and moody an Gil Jordan balance of tonal qualities, when you think about it and writing that is humorous without undermining the excitement and mystery of the stories contained herein, it's no wonder the Gil Jordan strip is so highly regarded among fans of Francophone comics. Tillieux's art seems to straddle a line between the cartoony "bigfoot" style of the Marcinelle school and the clean but realistic schematic style of the Ligne Claire school, and the combination is pure magic. Heartily recommended to both fans of Franco-Belgian comics and to Gil Jordan curious as to the full potential of the expressive cartoon stylings Private Eye: Murder by High Tide no longer see in mainstream American comics. It might not appeal to all tastes especially Gil Jordan who, reared on American comics, might have difficulty getting past the cartoony style being used in an adventure stripbut the craftsmanship is almost without peer. This is another double volume of adventures starring the Parisian private detective, and the second of only two English-language versions currently available. Having enjoyed the first, I bought this right away and was excited to read it, but also reluctant, as I knew no more stories would be forthcoming The titular story concerns an art dealer who is drowned, along with his car, on Devil's Strait — a beach road where bad timi This is another double volume of adventures starring the Parisian private detective, and the second of only two English-language versions currently available. The titular story concerns an art dealer who is drowned, along with his car, on Devil's Strait — a beach road where bad timing can lead to the tides dragging you to your doom. But was it a tragic accident, or a murder? This is followed by "Catch As Catch Can", wherein a dangerous convict mysteriously escapes from prison by seemingly just jumping right over an eight-foot wall. During his trial, he swore to kill the lawyer who had him put away: will he follow through on his threat? Inspector Crouton has a Gil Jordan presence in this book — his benign bumbling complimenting both Crackerjack's I still prefer "Dragonfly"! Even Miss Midge gets a few extra scenes here and there! There are some incredible action moments in this album — particularly our heroes' own perilous experience at Devil's Strait in the former story, and Jordan's many scrapes with death as he becomes a target in the latter. You can even tell where the original strips stopped on a cliffhanger, and despite the next page being right there, some of them still make you draw in breath and get the pulse racing. Humour remains very present, however. Whilst it never detracts Private Eye: Murder by High Tide the tension, it creates lighter moments in between the action scenes that counter them very well, and they flesh out the characters in an amusing yet believable manner. Oct 28, Tony rated it liked it Shelves: graphic-storytellingcrimesetting-francetranslated-fiction. In addition to the titular adventure, there's another one called "Catch as Catch Can. He is assisted by his wisecracking sidekick Crackerjack it's not explained in these two stories, but he's actually an ex-con whom Gil befriended in the first book in the seriesand the clumsy police inspector Crouton. Rounding out the group is a sophisticated no-nonsense secretary. Both Gil Jordan a nice balance of action and intrigue, with the hero getting outwitted multiple times along the way and almost killed. They are perhaps too densely wordy and complicated on the whole, but the artwork tilts the balance in their favor. Using the traditional layout Gil Jordan the era rectangular panels per pagethe world feels fully real and alive, with no shortcuts taken in backgrounds or details. Architecture, clothing, decor, textures, cars, shop windows, etc. Definitely worth checking out by anyone interested in European comics. Nov 05, Ryan rated it liked it Shelves: justok. I thought Private Eye: Murder by High Tide would love this one and was sorely disappointed. I can't help but be drawn to the clean, simple line in the art. Characters are hit or miss. The sidekick character is annoying and the main character of Gil Jordan is a bit two-dimensional. Also, this one is heavy on the exposition. There is some action, but it takes a back seat to explanations of plot twists that would have been more interesting seen than explained. Gil Jordan 30, Leena Nanda rated Private Eye: Murder by High Tide really liked it. Cute and fun read, but not necessarily a good Gil Jordan. No surprises. Jun 21, Craig rated it really liked it. Gorgeous art, goofy humor, and decent mysteries - what's not to like? Dec 31, Sonya rated it it was amazing. Beautiful art and an fun adventure mystery. I Gil Jordan the island bridge and had to look it up. There is a place in that has this. So awesome! Dec 15, Kate rated it it was amazing Shelves: graphic-novels. While the series is a pretty standard '50s detective setup hardboiled main detective, slow-witted but streetwise sidekick, Private Eye: Murder by High Tide secretary, associated police chiefit's still a really delightful read, especially because it never veers into the soul-crushing darkness of noir: Gil is hardboiled, Gil Jordan he gets into deadly scrapes, but things are Private Eye: Murder by High Tide right in the end. The art is really lovely; while I'm a huge fan of Tintin, much of Herge's art has a static feel to it. Not so here! One page While the series is a pretty standard '50s detective setup hardboiled main detective, slow-witted but streetwise sidekick, wise-cracking secretary, associated police chiefit's still a really delightful read, especially because it never veers into the soul-crushing darkness of noir: Gil is hardboiled, and he gets into deadly scrapes, but things are all right in the end. One page in particular p. Tillieux also does great work with heavy inking to convey shadows and bring across the aforementioned hardboiled feel pages 36 and 44 are great examples of this. Some of the larger panels can have an almost claustrophoic feel given how much he fits in them--the warehouse in the second story, for example, or the English slums in the first--but it works because it delivers a real sense of how cramped streets can be in France and England. As my excessive use of positive adjectives should have conveyed by now, I really really like this graphic novel. Hopefully Fantagraphics will bring over more Private Eye: Murder by High Tide the Gil Jordan series! Aug 07, Andrew rated it liked it Shelves: graphic-novelsmystery. While Gil Jordan by High Tide is a gorgeous, well-plotted graphic novel, it isn't as strong in the characterization department. Because we never get to know the characters particularly well, it's difficult to care about what happens to them, or who is responsible for the murders in the book. It's a fun diversion, and Private Eye: Murder by High Tide certainly check out future installments in the Gil Jordan, but I won't be waiting with bated breath for them. Dec 22, Patrice rated it it was ok Shelves: comedycrime-actiongraphic-novelmysteryshort-stories. The mysteries were interesting, if a bit campy, Private Eye: Murder by High Tide I did like the character of Gil Jorden as a detective, but I didn't like Crackerjack at all and felt sorry for the bumbling inspector who treated them as friends but was bullied by Crackerjack in return. I'm also not a particulary big fan of 's style comic art, so it was not visually appealing to me. I don't consider this to be a bad book, it simply did not suit my personal tastes.
