4 Tours (Conference Excursions)

Wednesday Conference Excursions E-1, -2, -3. –4. –5 are NOT included in Registration Fee. Conference excursions are not free. However, conference participants are recommended to join one of the excursions, because all excursions end at Meiji Mura, an open-air museum of Meiji-era building, where the conference dinner (free of charge) will be held on the day of the excursion. The Meiji Mura museum is about 30 km north of Nagoya University and requires one-hour drive to get there. Those conference participants who will not join the conference excursion will be directed later how to travel to the Meiji Mura Museum.

A park with real or reconstructed Gassho-Zukuri Houses, storage sheds water mill, and craft workshops. Atera Fault Trench The Atera fault, which extends for approximately 70 km in central Japan, is one of the most active strike-slip faults inland Japan. The left-lateral slip rate of the Atera fault during the late Quaternary is estimated about 5 mm/yr based on the offset terraces. Recent numerous trench excavations across the fault have revealed the recurrence interval of the surface-rupturing earthquakes is ~2000 years, and the most recent event corresponds to the 1586 M7.8 Tensho earthquake that widely devastated central Japan. Kamikochi, Nippon Alps Scenic Valley in western Nagano Prefecture, central Honshu. Kamikochi is surrounded by mountains and noted for its beautiful alpine scenery, hot springs, and ponds. * A Japanese style hotel, Ryokan, is used for accommodation of the tour. Each room with Tatami mat may be sheared with 2-4 persons. Each room is equipped with a western-style toilet and a bath tub. * Please let us know at the AMS-9 Conference Address, if you want to know the result of our negotiations to visit the Super Kamiokande facility for your final decision of attending this tour.

8 Applications and Payments Terms of Payment All payments have to be made by either one of the followings. Personal checks and currencies other than Japanese Yen will not be accepted.

Pending amounts The Registration Office of AMS-9 will collect any difference in registration fees arising from incorrect application on site. 9 General Information Nagoya The city of Nagoya (http://www.city.nagoya.jp/indexe.html), with a population of over two million, is the principal city of central Japan. The area in and around the city contains a large number of high-tech industries with names known worldwide, such as Toyota, Mitsubishi, Honda, and Sony.

The city’s central location, which led old Nagoya to be a transportation junction, is still an advantage for Nagoya’s visitors today. Nagoya is close to an abundance of sightseeing spots. From the beautiful seashores of Ise-Shima and Mikawa Bay to the majestic mountains of the Hida region and the Japan Alps, many areas are all within easy reach of Nagoya. Japan’s systematic transportation network takes you to major citie s, Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, etc. in a couple of hours. There also exist direct air services to 31 other cities in Japan and 27 cities abroad.

Passport and Visa Every foreign visitor entering Japan must have a valid passport. Visitors from countries whose citizens must have visas should apply to a Japanese consular office or diplomatic mission in their respective country at least three months before the intended date of travel. For further details, please contact your travel agent or the local consular office in your country.

Insurance The organizer cannot accept responsibility for accidents that might occur during the Conference. Delegates are encouraged to obtain travel insurance (medical, personal accident, and luggage) in their home country prior to departure.

Electrical Appliances The electric supply is 100 volts. The frequency is 60 Hz in western Japan including Nagoya and 50 Hz in eastern Japan including Tokyo and Chiba.

Tipping Tipping is not required anywhere in Japan, even in hotels, restaurants or taxis.

Climate and Clothing The temperature in Nagoya during the period of the conference ranges between 20 and 28 degrees, with an average of 23 degrees in Centigrade. It is the comfortable season in Japan, but it is sometimes still hot and humid.

Currency Exchange Only Japanese Yen is acceptable at regular stores and restaurants. Certain foreign currencies and credit cards may be accepted at a limited number of hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops. Major credit cards are accepted in a number of shops and hotels. However, there are few cashing machines for credit cards in Nagoya. Foreign currency exchange and cashing of traveler’s checks can be done at international airports and major hotels. Major banks that handle foreign currency such as US dollar are located in the downtown area. Banks are open from 9:00 to 15:00 on weekdays, closed on Saturday and Sunday. It should be noted that all payments made at the registration desk must be done in Japanese Yen. The exchange rates are 1 US dollar = 132.80 Yen and 1 Euro = 116.32 Yen (at March 25, 2002).

Shopping Business hour of most department stores is from 10:00 to 19:00. They are open on Saturday, Sundays and national holidays, but closed on either Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Business hours for retail shops differ, but most operate from 10:00 to 20:00 and are open on Saturday, Sundays and national holidays. Underground shopping centers are well developed and an underpass connects most buildings in downtown area.
