THOMAS COKE (1747-1814) HIS PERSONAL BACKGROUND* By John A. Vickers No history of the Methodist mov,ement in the years immediately before and after John Wesley's death can be written without refer 1 ence to Thomas Coke, whose name has become something of a I. I household word in World Methodist circles. Though remembered especially as a pioneer of overseas missions, he also occupies an important niche in the early history of Wesleyan Methodism in both Europe and America. Yet it cannot be denied that Coke has, on the whole, had a "bad press" and that the admiration for his energy and devotion has usually been muted and hedged with qualifications. Quite apart from the treatment he has received in a long line of lives of Wesley, he has been singularly ill-served by his own biographers. Ev,en allowing for the concentration of Methodist scholarship on John Wesley, to the neglect of every other figure on the scene, it remains a curious fact that the only serious study of Coke to appear in the last hundred years is 'that by the American, Bishop W. A. Candler, in 1923. Before that, we have two early lives, by Jonathan Crowther, a friend and fellow-preacher (1815) and by . Samuel Drew, his official biographer (1817), and the solid but un documented volume of J. W. Etheridge (1860). The other, slighter studies that have appeared from time to time are largely derived from these.! Yet a considerable, if not overwhelming, volume of material, especially letters, has survived on both sides of the Atlan tic, and much of it rem,ains unpublished. -

religions Article Loving My New Neighbor: The Korean-American Methodists’ Response to the UMC Debate over LGBTQ Individuals in Everyday Life Jeyoul Choi Department of Religion, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL 32611, USA; [email protected] Abstract: The recent nationwide debate of American Protestant churches over the ordination and consecration of LGBTQ clergymen and laypeople has been largely divisive and destructive. While a few studies have paid attention to individual efforts of congregations to negotiate the heated conflicts as their contribution to the denominational debate, no studies have recounted how post-1965 immigrants, often deemed as “ethnic enclaves apart from larger American society”, respond to this religious issue. Drawing on an ethnographic study of a first-generation Korean Methodist church in the Tampa Bay area, Florida, this article attempts to fill this gap in the literature. In brief, I argue that the Tampa Korean-American Methodists’ continual exposure to the Methodist Church’s larger denominational homosexuality debate and their personal relationships with gay and lesbian friends in everyday life together work to facilitate their gradual tolerance toward sexual minorities as a sign of their accommodation of individualistic and democratic values of American society. · .. __._--_._-------------------------------..,..- THE MET~IODIST DOCTRINE OF THE CHURCH by Durward Hofler There is no Wesleyan doctrine of the church as such, for John Wesley unlike John Calvin did not undertake a systematic com pilation of his theology or his ecclesiology. The student must search for Wesley's understanding of the church in his doctrinal views. Accordingly, this study will be limited to what can be found about the doctrine of the church in Wesley's writings and in the history of American Methodism down to 1820. Inherent in Wesley's doctrine of the witness of the spirit is his view of the church. He made some affirmations concerning the witness of the spirit which throw light on his understanding of the church. Listed in the order of their importance to Wesley the affirmations are as follows. First, Wesley insisted that he had a divine call or mission to save souls. He wrote to James Hervey on March 20,1739: On scriptural principles I do not think it hard to justify whatever I do. God in scripture commands me, according to my power, to instruct the ignorant, reform the wicked, confirm the virtuous. Man forbids me to do this in another's parish: that is, in effect, to do it at all; seeing I have now no parish of my own, nor probably ever shall. Whom, then, shall I hear, God or man? A dispensation of the gospel is committed to me; and woe is me if I preach not the gospel. ...I look upon all the world as my parish.1 Obviously in citing scripture to justify action contrary to the will of his church, Wesley was indirectly saying that the salvation of souls takes precedence over church authority and practice. -

Methodist History, 48:1 (October 2009) “AND ARE WE YET ALIVE”: REFLECTIONS ON THE TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH CHARLES YRIGOYEN, JR. In 1749, Charles Wesley published a poem in a collection titled, Hymns and Sacred Poems. The poem was located in the section of the book desig- nated “Hymns for Christian Friends.” Since the time of the Wesleys, Charles’ poem has been the opening hymn of the British Methodist Conference and has often opened many other annual conferences of world Methodism. Some of its words, but not all, are especially appropriate for the celebration of the first twenty years of our Historical Society. Many of you know the hymn, #553 in The United Methodist Hymnal: “And are we yet alive, and see each other’s face? Glory and praise to Jesus give for his redeeming grace.” Just twenty years ago this week our Society was born here at Lake Junaluska. Three hundred fifty people were present for the launching. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Albert C. Outler, world renowned scholar of the Wesleys, outstanding theologian, and leading ecumenist. At the time we did not know it would be Outler’s last public address, the con- summation of a brilliant career. Some of those present this evening attended that event and became charter members of the Society. Others attending that evening have crossed the threshold from this life to the next. The organization of the denomination’s Historical Society was an indi- cation of United Methodist interest in our church’s history. -

DISCOVERY edited by Kenneth E. Rowe A Double Letter John Wesley and Thomas Coke to Freeborn Garrettson by J. Hamby Barton Dr. Rowe recently uncovered in the Drew archives this remarkable double letter: Wesley to Garrettson and, on the reverse of Wesley's letter,Coke to Garrettson. The sheet on which the letters are written is small, measuring 16 by 20 centimeters. Wesley's handwriting, though not strong is clearly legible. The cancelled lines, beginning "In", "way" and "self" are tantalizing but irrecoverable. From the bleed-through which blots Coke's letter it appears that Coke supplemented with a brush blot Wesley's simple "squiggle line" cancel (visible following "In"). The substitution of "States" for "Provinces" in the first paragraph is in Coke's hand as is the superscript "not" in paragraph2, line 2. Note the firmer strokes, the shape ofthe letters and the different slant. ".: At the time, February 1786, Wesley and Coke were togefher in London. Wesley's letter to John Stretton, written on February 26 also has a note from Coke referring to his intended visit to Nova Scotia. Coke had been away from England from September 1784 to June 1785 in the business of organizing the American Church. He continued in England through the 1786 Conference in Bristol when.William Hammet and John Clarke were appointed to Nova Scotia. Hammet was ordained by Wesley at the Conference together with William Warrener who was appointed to the West Indies. 59 60 METHODIST HISTORY Freeborn Garrettson was appointed to Nova Scotia together with James Cromwell by the American Christmas Conference in Baltimore, 1784-85. -

The primary research question is defined as: “To what extent do the dialogues under analysis relate to Arminian soteriology?” By seeking an answer to this question, new knowledge is sought on the current soteriological position of the Methodist-Lutheran dialogues, the contemporary Methodist theology and the commonalities between the Lutheran and Arminian understanding of soteriology. This way the soteriological picture of the Methodist-Lutheran discussions is clarified. The dialogues under analysis were selected on the basis of versatility. Firstly, the sole world organisation level dialogue was chosen: The Church – Community of Grace. Additionally, the document World Methodist Council and the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification is analysed as a supporting document. Secondly, a document concerning the discussions between two main-line churches in the United States of America was selected: Confessing Our Faith Together. -

Two Separate Unions Formed One United Church by David Oberlin, 1979 The United Methodist Church is the product of two recent church mergers – one in 1946, which brought the Evangelical and United Brethren in Christ denominations together to form the Evangelical United Brethren Church (hereafter called the EUB Church); and one in 1968, which combined the EUB and Methodist denominations to form the United Methodist Church. Each merger created a new denomination, altered church organization, and had an impact on its membership. This paper examines these two mergers and their impact on members of affected congregations in Union County, Pennsylvania. Located in a rural setting in central Pennsylvania, Union County includes many small communities and two major towns – Lewisburg with almost 9,000 residents, and Mifflinburg with a population close to 7,000. Within the county are 17 United Methodist churches – three of which are former Methodist, and fourteen of which are former EUB. While the United Brethren in Christ Church was active in central Pennsylvania, all of the former EUB congregations in Union County were originally Evangelical. Each of the former Methodist congregations has its own pastor, and ten of the fourteen former EUB congregations make up three circuits within the county. Because there were no United Brethren in Christ churches in Union County, the 1946 merger did not have much of an impact on the congregations of the county. The 1968 merger, on the other hand, had a large impact in Union County because EUB and Methodist churches were located throughout the county. In Mifflinburg and Lewisburg, for example, the 1968 merger resulted in two United Methodist churches located within a block of each other.
