We have a wonderful setting in a magnificent historic hotel in the beautiful city of Toronto. A new record has been set this year with a total of 612 sessions, and we are certain that everyone will find the intellectual stimulation and opportunities for meeting and socializing with colleagues that we have come to expect from our annual meetings. We thank everyone for their patience this year as we introduced a new system for on-line paper submission. On-line paper submission was pioneered by last year=s president and program chairs, and we learned much from their experience. A decision was made to contract with a new company with experience in setting up systems for several major organizations. Those systems had to be adapted to our needs, however, and that meant there were many bugs to be worked out. We know that some of you were the guinea pigs as we discovered those bugs, and again, we appreciate your patience and good humor. An on-line system dramatically improves the efficiency of setting up the annual program. We hope you also find that it facilitates the submission process and that you will enjoy the ability to plan your meeting schedule with the on- line final program. Working with our Program Committee this year, we especially encouraged the formation of complete panels for the meeting. Because 5 these panels typically have the greatest coherence, benefit from the comments of a discussant, and provide for lively interactions, we have highlighted them in the program as thematic sessions. We also offered division chairs the opportunity to highlight sessions they wanted their members to notice; thus division Asponsorship@ is noted with selected session titles. We are continuing this year with the highly successful poster sessions and associated wine and cheese reception. At the time of the program going to print we already have 162 posters submitted, and there will likely be quite a few more actually presented in Toronto. Roundtable sessions also continue to be popular; some of those sessions are planned by participants, whereas others are composed by program committee members from submissions by participants who prefer the less formal setting of a roundtable for their presentations. The Society is grateful to our talented members who have been providing the musical entertainment that is always a highlight of the conference. This year, in response to requests from the membership, we are expanding the musical offerings. Ron Akers and his Bluegrass Band will now perform during the opening reception on Wednesday night, and for the Friday night dance that benefits the ASC Minority Fellowship Fund, Larry Sherman and the Hot Spots will be followed by a DJ recommended by the Local Arrangements Committee. We expect to see all of you on the dance floor! 6 Another innovation of Frank Cullen, Bonnie Fisher, and Melissa Moon, the 2004 President and Program Chairs, was the Saturday brunch to close the conference. After almost running out of food last year due to the unexpected popularity of the brunch, we have decided to make the brunch an ASC tradition. We hope you will all join us there to say good-bye as we wrap up what we hope will be another great ASC conference. Thank you for coming to Toronto, and have fun!
