NPS Form 10-900-a OMB Approval No. 1024-0018 (8-86) United States Department Of The Interior National Park Service National Register of Historic Places South Main Street Historic District Continuation Sheet Akron, Summit County, Ohio Section number_____7_______ Page____1______ ________________________________________________________________________________ PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION - SUMMARY The South Main Street Historic District encompasses an area of downtown Akron, Ohio that was developed from the 1910s through the early 1930s as an extension and reorientation of the city’s older commercial center to the north. It includes a stretch of South Main Street – Akron’s primary commercial artery – that retains a concentration of historic buildings, now bounded on the north and south by more recent development and surface parking lots. The district is primarily comprised of narrow, deep commercial buildings four stories or fewer in height, anchored by a few substantial mid-rise buildings and one 16-story tower that represent some of Akron’s most significant buildings from the period. A range of early 20th-century architectural styles are represented, with notable examples of Classical Revival, Renaissance Revival, and Art Deco design dispersed among more common Commercial Style buildings. Many of the buildings have experienced some level of alteration, and others have been demolished in favor of open space or more recent construction, but overall the district retains its historic character and integrity.
