SEBASTIANO DEL PIOMBO AND HIS COLLABORATION WITH MICHELANGELO: DISTANCE AND PROXIMITY TO THE DIVINE IN CATHOLIC REFORMATION ROME by Marsha Libina A dissertation submitted to the Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland April, 2015 © 2015 Marsha Libina All Rights Reserved Abstract This dissertation is structured around seven paintings that mark decisive moments in Sebastiano del Piombo’s Roman career (1511-47) and his collaboration with Michelangelo. Scholarship on Sebastiano’s collaborative works with Michelangelo typically concentrates on the artists’ division of labor and explains the works as a reconciliation of Venetian colorito (coloring) and Tuscan disegno (design). Consequently, discourses of interregional rivalry, center and periphery, and the normativity of the Roman High Renaissance become the overriding terms in which Sebastiano’s work is discussed. What has been overlooked is Sebastiano’s own visual intelligence, his active rather than passive use of Michelangelo’s skills, and the novelty of his works, made in response to reform currents of the early sixteenth century. This study investigates the significance behind Sebastiano’s repeating, slowing down, and narrowing in on the figure of Christ in his Roman works. The dissertation begins by addressing Sebastiano’s use of Michelangelo’s drawings as catalysts for his own inventions, demonstrating his investment in collaboration and strategies of citation as tools for artistic image-making. Focusing on Sebastiano’s reinvention of his partner’s drawings, it then looks at the ways in which the artist engaged with the central debates of the Catholic Reformation – debates on the Church’s mediation of the divine, the role of the individual in the path to personal salvation, and the increasingly problematic distance between the layperson and God. -

“Baroque”: a Term Used in the Literature of the Arts with Both Historical and Critical Meanings and As Both an Adjective and a Noun
003_Baroque.doc READINGS: BAROQUE Background: “Baroque”: A term used in the literature of the arts with both historical and critical meanings and as both an adjective and a noun. The word has a long, complex and controversial history (it possibly derived from a Portuguese word for a misshapen pearl, and until the late 19th century it was used mainly as a synonym for `absurd' or `grotesque'), but in English it is now current with three principal meanings. Primarily, it designates the dominant style of European art between Mannerism and Rococo. This style originated in Rome and is associated with the Catholic Counter-Reformation, its salient characteristics--overt rhetoric and dynamic movement--being well suited to expressing the self- confidence and proselytizing spirit of the reinvigorated Catholic Church. It is by no means exclusively associated with religious art, however, and aspects of the Baroque can be seen even in works that have nothing to do with emotional display--for example in the dynamic lines of certain Dutch still-life paintings. Secondly, it is used as a general label for the period when this style flourished, broadly speaking, the 17th century and in certain areas much of the 18th century. Hence thus phrases as `the age of Baroque', `Baroque politics', `Baroque science', and so on. Thirdly, the term `Baroque' (often written without the initial capital) is applied to art of any time or place that shows the qualities of vigorous movement and emotional intensity associated with Baroque art in its primary meaning. Much Hellenistic sculpture could therefore be described as `baroque'. The older meaning of the word, as a synonym for `capricious', `overwrought' or `florid', still has some currency, but not in serious criticism. -

A short distance from the church of Trinità dei Monti he bought some land where tonnes of stone, gravel and rubble had been piled up, partly for the construction of Via Ludovisi. Rather than just dispose of the rubbish, Maraini had the idea of building his house on top of this artificial hill. The majestic three-storey villa, set in lush gardens, was designed by his architect brother Otto, who was also involved with the construction of the Excelsior Hotel on Via Veneto. -

Already in 1899 New Rochelle had incorporated as a city. While New Rochelle was one of the earliest communities in the area, having been founded by the Huguenots in 1688, New York City residents first discovered New Rochelle in large numbers with the advent of the steam boat, especially the one that took them to the pleasure gardens at Glen Island and the Neptune House resort. Soon, planned resi- dential areas like Rochelle Park (1885) and Rochelle Heights (1905) sprang up. New Rochelle’s popula- tion doubled between 1900 and 1910 and would double again between 1910 and 1930. The vil- lage the Huguenots had founded with large tracts of farm land was rapidly being sub-divided into residential communities. A system of trolleys, com- muter railroads, and later the parkways made New Rochelle easily accessible. The New York area had always been friendly to artists. In the 19th century painters of the Hudson River School settled here. Many artists traveled to Europe and began to paint in the style of the im- pressionists while others were more influenced by traditional Beaux Arts training. Meanwhile, with the turn of the century, the highly influential real- ism of the Ash Can School promoted the idea that art didn’t have to portray just beautiful objects. -

Meyerhoff Collection of works by Alphonse Mucha and his circle is the largest private collection dedicated to the Art Nouveau master ever to come to auction. Meyerhoff, a champion racehorse owner, assembled the collection in the 1970s and ‘80s with his wife in their home in Maryland. Of the over 200 lots offered, more than half are works by Mucha. These include beloved posters such as Job, 1896; Salon des Cent, 1896; Monaco - Monte Carlo, 1897; Medee, 1898; and Princezna Hyacinta, 1911. Also in the sale are many of his exquisite decorative panels, including Têtes Byzantines, circa 1898; Dawn and Dusk, 1899; and several versions of Les Fleurs, circa 1900. -
