Prayer of the Month • March 2012 With a thankful heart, O Lord, I acknowledge thine infinite goodness in giving me such a portion of worldly goods as frees me from anxious cares: but I beseech thee to give me grace so to receive the gifts that they may never become snares and temptations. Make me sensible of their uncertainty that I may sit loose to them, using them temperately whilst thou art pleased to continue them, and ready to part with them contentedly when thy good Providence shall call me to such a resignation. John Hough, Bishop of Worcester, 1651–1743 ‘I have learnt in whatever state to be content’, St Paul writes. John Hough certainly had plenty of experience on which to base such a prayer, over the series of confrontations over his presidency of Magdalen College, alternately being accepted and rejected. We should of course give thanks for all the good things we receive, and that we can be saved from anxiety over the necessities of life. There can be a fine line between appreciating something and depending on it. Hough prays to sit lightly to whatever benefits he receives, and that he may have a spirit of resignation when a benefit is lost. We can imagine the experience behind this final thought. May we achieve such equanimity without the need for an experience like his! Born in 1651, John Hough studied at Magdalen College, Oxford, from which he graduated in 1676. He was elected Provost of the same college in 1687, but due to the opposition of King James II, the Court of Ecclesiastical Commission replaced him with Samuel Parker, Bishop of Oxford. Hough refused to accept the replacement, but was overruled. Parker died early in 1688, and was replaced by Bonaventure Giffard. After the Glorious Revolution, though, Hough was reinstated. He became successively Bishop of Oxford (1690-9); Lichfield and Coventry (1699-1717); and finally Worcester (1717-43). He died on 8 May 1743. According to a biography of him, published in the year of his death, he was courteous, affable and generous, with an unaffected piety. There is a memorial to him in Worcester Cathedral. I enclose a brief historical sketch of Magdalen College as a stimulus to what will, I hope, develop into an abiding interest in our history and in the history of Oxford as a whole. You will already be conscious of the fact that Magdalen possesses an incomparable environment, both in buildings and landscape, and also a set of carefully nurtured traditions that spring from our rich and colourful history. It is impossible to condense into a few pages a full account of our residential buildings, Chapel, many libraries, gardens and archives. They have evolved in the course of over a half millennium and are very fully documented within the College. The text I am sending you, written by an Old Member of the College, is offered as a starting point for your own exploration of the College and its history. I do hope you will make use of it during the important years that you are about to spend at Magdalen. I have also added my own note on more recent developments in the College. The chapter covers the major political events of 1687, particularly those leading up to the Revolution of 1688. It shows how James II alienated his Tory subjects and provided the Whig "Tom" Wharton, soon to be a leader in the Revolution, with powerful allies The chapter also deals with the most significant changes in the personal world of the Whartons. The table of abbreviations and the short-title bibliography apply to the whole book, not merely this chapter. GIFT HORSES AND BRIDLES J. Kent Clark On 19 March 1687, Mary Wharton Kemeys had her first sitting at the studio of portrait artist William Wissing. Her brother Tom, she reported to her husband, had already sat several times; his portrait, she supposed, would be finished after one more session. The popular Wissing was also making a portrait of Tom's mistress Jane Dering, whom Mary had met at the studio, along with Jane's sister Katharine, Lady Perceval. Since Wissing was working on several other portraits, Mary told her husband, it was unlikely that her own picture would be completed before she was obliged to return home to Wales. 1 As for Wharton family news, Mary said, the only recent event worth mentioning was Tom's victory at Newport Pagnell, where that week his horse had won a plate worth thirty pounds.

I have tried to tell the story continuously, using as fully as is possible within such narrow limits the actual words of my authorities. Though I have been obliged to confine myself somewhat rigidly to matters of local interest, yet not a few of the items and documents now first published will, I think, be found to illustrate the general development of University life and education. I have not attempted to describe in detail the careers of such Trinity men as Chillingworth, Sheldon, Ireton, Ludlow, Somers, Stanhope, Chatham, North, Newman, Selborne, Freeman, or others who have been really important in various ways, though I have been careful to record anything known about their lives at Oxford. But I have mentioned, even briefly, as many names as possible, partly because the number of distinguished scholars and commoners is a special feature in the work of the College, and partly in the hope that here and there such mention may lead to the disclosure of letters or diaries, preserved by the same accidents as the vi PREFACE Verney correspondence or Harris's autobiography, which might furnish me at some future date with additional materials for a larger volume.
