Lewis, Ph.D. On September 28, Gloria Naylor died of a heart attack while visiting the Virgin Islands at just 66-years-old. I was just 7-years-old and in 3rd grade when I was introduced to her on March 19, 1989, when Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions produced a two-part miniseries for ABC based on her 1982 debut novel The Women of Brewster Place. The miniseries, like the novel, focuses on seven Black women (Mattie, Etta Mae, Lucielia “Ciel,” Melanie “Kiswana,” Cora Lee, Lorraine, and Theresa) and their experiences, and for this momentous occasion, Oprah put together an all-star Black cast, including herself, Paul Winfield, Cicely Tyson, Moses Gunn, Mary Alice, William Allen Young, Lynn Whitfield, and many others. I realize it may be difficult for some of you to understand why I would refer to a TV show as “momentous” for these reasons. After all, you probably watch or at least know of How to Get Away with Murder, Empire, Queen Sugar, Survivor’s Remorse, and so on. However, back in 1989, it had been almost 25 years since the first Black lead actor starred in a television drama (Bill Cosby on I, Spy). It had been over 10 years since another miniseries featuring a predominantly Black cast (Alex Haley’s Roots) aired on a major network. BET was only just approaching its 10th year of existence. A Black actor hadn’t yet won a Best Actress or Best Actor Award at the Golden Globe awards or the Oscars. Back in 1989, I remember my mom, her sisters, her mother, her friends, my father’s mother, and other women in my family vowing to tune into ABC for those two nights. And I remember watching and thinking about how powerful it was to see so many Black women on TV all at once. Black women talking with one another about being lesbians. Black women talking about being in love with Black men. Black women arguing about class disparity. Black women hiding the scars of intimate partner violence. Black women struggling with motherhood. Black women fighting slumlords. I thought I would only ever witness the power of Black women circles at the kitchen table in a loved one’s home or in the beauty shop. Now, here it was on TV for the world to see. A few years later, I fell in love with The Women of Brewster Place all over again when I read the novel. I also fell in love with Linden Hills (1985), Mama Day (1988), Bailey’s Café (1992), The Men of Brewster Place (1999), and 1996 (2005). I fell in love with the way Naylor wrote Black joy, pain, happiness, sadness, anxiety, depression, dancing, singing, fighting, lovemaking, and praying. I loved the way she wrote Black women’s voices. Their spirits. Their souls. Their hearts. I could hear my Aunt Pat, my Aunt Terry, and my Aunt Janet fussing at children, hollering at lovers, singing in the choir, laughing with girlfriends. I could hear hot combs sizzling, soap operas playing faintly behind pots and pans clinking, floorboards creaking, children playing Double-Dutch and “Mother, May I?” I could smell fish frying, Queen Helene’s, Murphy Oil Soap, cigarettes, sweet potato pie, and the smell of ponytails laced with Ampro frying in the microwave. Thank God for my late paternal grandmother, Marshene Regenia Odd, who kept Black women on her bookshelves so that I knew the tradition in which I was developing a self. Thank God for Gloria Naylor, who never let me forget it. As she noted when she accepted the National Book Foundation’s First Novel Award in 1983 for The Women of Brewster Place, “I wrote that book as a tribute to [my mother] and other Black woman who, in spite of the very limited personal circumstances, somehow manage to hold a fierce belief in the limitless possibilities of the human spirit.” I ask you, then, readers, to venerate her memory and to breathe life into her now ancestral spirit by remembering and honoring her legacy. .

Superman, Batman, Captain America, Green Lantern, Marvel Girl; I could fi ll the rest of this and the next page. The common denominator? They are all white. There are benevolent black superheroes, like Storm, played most famously in 2006 by Halle Berry (of whom more later) in X-Men: The Last Stand , and Frozone, voiced by Samuel L. Jackson in the 2004 animated fi lm The Incredibles. But they are a rarity. This is why Will Smith and Wesley Snipes are so unusual: they have both played superheroes – Smith the ham-fi sted boozer Hancock , and Snipes the vampire-human hybrid Blade . Pulling away from the parallel reality of superheroes, the two actors themselves offer case studies.

Students are encouraged to attend performances of African American plays, spoken word events and performance art in Lawrence (or the surrounding area) for class participation credit. This course employs an inter-textual perspective that privileges texts for the stage as it engages African American Theatre as a site of performance that continues to strongly influence other theatrical genres of performance such as television, film, fine art and performance art. Goals: The goals of the course are to help students: 1) understand the key playwrights, actors and general history of African American Theater and performance of the time period discussed; 2) understand the specific social, cultural, political factors that produce a play; 3) critically and artistically articulate verbally and in writing, the genealogy of African American Theatre; 4) identify how African American Theatre shapes popular culture and influences and contributes to mainstream American Theatre.

He invites them aboard, but warns if they enter the Nautilus, they will not be free to leave. The submarine is a marvel of technology, with electricity harnessed for use on board. Nemo provides his guests diving suits equipped with oxygen for exploration of die dazzling undersea world. Aronnax learns Nemo was destined to be the king to lead his people into the modern scientific world, but was forced from his land by enemies. Now, he is hoping to halt shipping between the United States and Europe as a way of regaining his throne. Ned makes several escape attempts, but Sophie and her father find the opportunities for scientific study too great to leave. Sophie rejects Nemo's marriage proposal calling him selfish. He shows his generosity, revealing gold bars he will drop near his former country for pearl divers to find and use to help the unfortunate.

    Lynn Whitfield With roots that lead back to Louisiana southern aristocracy, lovely leading lady Lynn Whitfield was born in 1953, the eldest of four children and a third-generation BFA graduate from Howard University. Her dentist father was instrumental in developing Lynn's initial interest in acting as he was a prime figure in forming community theater in her native Baton Rouge. She is of African American and Native American descent, specifically Cherokee. First garnering attention on the stage by studying and performing with the Black Repertory Company in Washington, D.C, she married one of the company's co-founders and pioneers of black theatre, playwright/director/actor Van Whitfield in 1974. She eventually moved to New York and appeared off-Broadway in such shows as "The Great Macdaddy" and "Showdown" before earning acclaim in the 1977 Los Angeles production of the landmark black play "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide...When the Rainbow Is Enuf" co-starring Alfre Woodard. Lynn eventually became a force to be reckoned with intelligent and principled roles on quality film and TV as well Lynn's Hollywood career unfolded under a talent development program at Columbia Pictures in 1979. Appearing on such established TV shows as "Hill Street Blues" and in a 1982 PBS version of her "For Colored Girls..." stage hit, she made her film debut with Doctor Detroit (1983) and doled out a number of support roles in other popular films as well such as Silverado (1985), The Slugger's Wife (1985), Jaws: The Revenge (1987), and Dead Aim (1987).
