Trees are sustainable and renewable materials, which give us shelter and oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Trees are a primary resource that human society depends upon every day, for example, homes, heating, furniture, and aircraft. Wood from trees gives us paper, cardboard, and medical supplies, thus impacting our homes, school, work, and play. All of the above-mentioned applications have been well developed over the past thousands of years. However, trees and wood have much more to offer us as advanced materials, impacting emerging high-tech fields, such as bioengineering, flexible electronics, and clean energy. Wood naturally has a hierarchical structure, composed of well-oriented microfibers and tracheids for water, ion, and oxygen transportation during metabolism. At higher magnification, the walls of fiber cells have an interesting morphologya distinctly mesoporous structure.

The first edition was published in 2010 as Bishop Museum Technical Report 51. That 2010 list included 5,375 dipterists. This second edition lists 5,701, an increase of 326 in just a little over two years. I began in the late 1980s to compile an authority file of all authors who had proposed at least one or more names of extant and/or fossil Diptera taxa at family level or below. The need for this list stemmed from two focal points: 1) to provide a unambiguous (i.e., unique) identifier for every author who proposed a dipteran name; and 2) to provide to a wide user-community basic biographical information on authors of fly names in order to allow accurate identification of these authors and for general interest in just who were these people describing fly names. Authority files are comprised of entries that are used as templates for associations with and cross-indexing in bibliographies, taxon lists, collection information, and other sets of data. As such, having as accurate a set of data as possible pertaining to those entries is required in order to avoid ambiguities.

  • The Oxytocin Receptor: from Intracellular Signaling to Behavior

Neumann Department of Behavioural and Molecular Neurobiology, Institute of Zoology, University of Regensburg, Regensburg, Germany Jurek B, Neumann ID. The Oxytocin Receptor: From Intracellular Signaling to Behav- ior. Physiol Rev 98: 1805–1908, 2018. Published June 13, 2018; doi:10.1152/ physrev.00031.2017.—The many facets of the oxytocin (OXT) system of the brain and periphery elicited nearly 25,000 publications since 1930 (see FIGURE 1, as listed in PubMed), which revealed central roles for OXT and its receptor (OXTR) in reproduction, Land social and emotional behaviors in animal and human studies focusing on mental and physical health and disease. In this review, we discuss the mechanisms of OXT expression and release, expression and binding of the OXTR in brain and periphery, OXTR-coupled signaling cascades, and their involvement in behavioral outcomes to assemble a comprehensive picture of the central and peripheral OXT system. Traditionally known for its role in milk let-down and uterine contraction during labor, OXT also has implications in physiological, and also behavioral, aspects of reproduc- tion, such as sexual and maternal behaviors and pair bonding, but also anxiety, trust, sociability, food intake, or even drug abuse. The many facets of OXT are, on a molecular basis, brought about by a single receptor. The OXTR, a 7-transmembrane G protein-coupled receptor capable of binding ␣ ␣ to either G i or G q proteins, activates a set of signaling cascades, such as the MAPK, PKC, PLC, or CaMK pathways, which converge on transcription factors like CREB or MEF-2.

  • Annual Report Publications 2011
Publications Publications in refereed journals based on ESO data (2011) The ESO Library maintains the ESO Telescope Bibliography (telbib) and is responsible for providing paper-based statistics. Access to the database for the years 1996 to present as well as information on basic publication statistics are available through the public interface of telbib (http://telbib.eso.org) and from the “Basic ESO Publication Statistics” document (http://www.eso.org/sci/libraries/edocs/ESO/ESOstats.pdf), respectively. In the list below, only those papers are included that are based on data from ESO facilities for which observing time is evaluated by the Observing Programmes Committee (OPC). Publications that use data from non-ESO telescopes or observations obtained during ‘private’ observing time are not listed here.
