Game Mechanics

Moveset

The game has an excellent move-set, which is reminiscent of an old school game. The character has powerful jumping skills, in addition to quick motion and a multitude of shovel-related maneuvers. Clicking the standard attack button will swing the shovel right ahead, doing damage to anything in a 2x2 space up ahead. You can also do this attack in the middle of the air.

You can use this button for the digging up for dirt or breaking walls/blocks that may be destroyed. Also, the shovels swings have the ability to block projectile attacks coming towards you. It also destroys the majority of them. Of course, each projective will reflect differently when blocked. When fighting against mini-bosses and bosses, flashing projectiles can be blocked and reflected back to deal damage to the shooting enemy.

One of the top moves you can use would be the shovel drop. When you press down while in the middle of the air, you will do a stab motion downwards with a shovel. After pressing down, your knight will continue thrusting until landing, getting hit, or having the attack cancelled with your attack button.

Cancelling the shovel attack is quite necessary as a mechanic, and you’ll find yourself using it often.

After landing a drop, 1 of 3 things will occur. The first will be simply landing in a stand position. The second will be landing on enemies and destroyable blocks, which will cause you to bounce. In a 3rd situation, special enemies will cause you to bounce way higher than normal jumps.

A normal shovel swing or a drop will do 1 point of damage. Later in game, you can acquire the power to do charged swings. Those perform wide arcs, which deal 2 damage points.

Invulnerability Window

Sometimes, when striking an enemy and not killing them, you may notice that they’ll flash in some colors for less than a second. You can’t hit them in that mode, until they stop. This is because they are immune to getting hit during those flash periods. In a situation like that, you can gain advantage by landing first blood on your opponent. Keep the pressure on when attacking even if the enemy is about attack, just as long as you can avoid getting hit.

Health

You get a start with bubbles of health, where each has a value of 2 hp. You can upgrade that to 10 through using meal tickets, which you can bring to the Gastronomer at the village. You can purchase 3 of the rickets at the village at the Goatitian. Another 3 are acquired after completion of all sets of Boss Knights.

MP

Your knight starts with 30 points of MP. The MP consumption differs from relic to relic. You can upgrade your total MP points by increments of 10 points. You can purchase those upgrades from the village at the MPist.

Money

The primary method of boosting your Shovel Knight is through the purchase of upgrades and relics. Doing this requires you to use gold, which is collected through various gems at differing game stages. The following is a list of those gems which you can acquire: Grey - $1 Blue - $5 Green - $10 Yellow - $20 Red - $50 Pink - $200 Treasure Fish - $350

Items

While travelling, your knight will find a variety of collectible items other than the gems which provide the power boosts. Those include:

Meal Platter - Contains Apple, Turkey or Carrot a bomb. Special platters are given towards the Tower of Fate’s end: Ascents have a turkey within them, in addition to a Jar of MP.

• Carrot - Heals 4hp – You’ll find them at dirt piles. They are usually inside Meal Platters, or gained after defeating mini-bosses. • Apple - Heals 6hp - Found inside Meal Platters. Can be fished in Troupple Pond, or gained after defeating mini-bosses. • Turkey - Heals 20hp - Found inside Meal Platters or gained after defeating mini-bosses. • Blue Colored Fish - Heals 2hp - can be pulled from a bottomless pit using a rod. • Blue Colored Fish (Medium) - Heals 8hp - can be pulled from a bottomless pit using a rod. • Blue Colored Fish (Large) - Heals 16hp - can be pulled from a bottomless pit using a rod. • MP Jar (Small) - Heals 5mp • MP Jar (Large) - Heals 30mp • Treasure Chest - open then up to receive gems. They come in various variants, with the most common one costing $300. You can have close to $1000 or a song scroll in there.

Checkpoints

They look like glass orbs positioned on stands. They are activated through passage underneath them. All checkpoints are destroyable (with the tower of fate and plains being an exception).

When checkpoints light up, a single image of a gem type will flame inside the ball. Shattering the ball by hitting it 3 times will provide a pink gem, in addition to a circle of any color you choose. The greater the value presented, the more difficulty there is in the coming section.

The smashing of checkpoints prevents you from ending up in a re-spawn if you die. You will then return to the nearest unbroken checkpoint, or the beginning of that level. A checkpoint can return again when a stage is exited and you go back there.

Death

When your health points run low, either by falling down or hitting spikes, you die. We covered the re-spawn locations above in the checkpoints area. Death causes you to drop 25% of the total gold you had on you, which are usually in the form of 3 bags. You can try each area you die at as much as you wish, recovering your money in the process. Just note that if you die in the process of trying to recover your money, you’ll drop more bags. The first set that you were trying to recover will be gone. Also note that when dying, treasure pickups do not re-spawn.

Song Scrolls

They’re spread throughout the pages of the game, with a musical note as a symbol that marks them. Collect those and exchange them with the bard at the village, where he’ll reward you with $500. He’ll also allow you to listen to some musical tracks available on the bard’s menu. Now, the bard will only provide Detailss for the latest song scroll collected when multiple scrolls are given in. Regardless, you can still hear the Details of other scrolls too by hitting the “Menu/Pause” button, and then highlighting the track you want on the “Play Song” menu. 46 song scrolls are available, yet you can begin with the 1st to 5th scrolls that you already have in inventory. You won’t be receiving any rewards.

Troupple King

The purchase of up to 2 chalices (Troupple) can provide you with many advantages. You can take those to the Troupple Pond, where the Troupple King will fill them up for you using 1 of 3 ichors, all for free.

Red ichors provides MP and health restoration to the maximum. Blue ones give you invincibility for 10 seconds, while yellow ones turn you into a magnet of treasures for 60 seconds. An ichor can also be provided to you randomly, assuming you own an empty chalice, while being able to get a red fish from a sparkling hole. There are no limits to the number of visits you can pay the King to get your refills!

Map/Progression

The map of the world can show you how to move around and select your in-game destination. The map has a division in 4 portions which open-up as you progress through the game. After winning at the introduction stage, this being the Plans, you’ll move into the first portion. You’ll unlock the other new portions of the game after defeating the Order of No. Quarter Knights in the portion you’re at.

• Portion 1 – Village, Plains, Pridemoor Keep (King Knight), Troupple Pond, The Lich Yard (Spectre Knight), Forest of Phasing. • Portion 2 – Iron Whale (Treasure Knight), Armor Outpost, Knuckler’s Quarry, Explodatorium (Plague Knight), Lost City (Mole Knight). • Portion 3 – Hall of Champions, Clockwork Tower (Tinker Knight), Flying Machine (Propeller Knight), Frigid Flight, Shortcut, Stranded Ship (Polar Knight). • Portion 4 – Tower of Fate: Entrance, Tower of Fate: Ascent, Tower of Fate: ????

At varying points in your quest, there will be on map which will appear. Each time a reload occurs, they wander the map. Such encounters, while optional, provide ample of suitable rewards.

Also, the Iron Whale and Pridemoor Keep also have bonus which pop-up after the defeat shown through the red gem that hovers over that stage. Such short stages utilize the original aesthetic of the stage with additional loot that could be grabbed.

Block Types

There a variety of differing destroyable blocks in game, each with differing characteristics. Blocks either come in 1x1 or 2x2 sizes. Those block types include:

• Sandstone – Light yellowish in color, which can be destroyed by being bit from the side ising a shovel swing attack. You can attack from the top using a shovel drop, where you’ll slice right through without bouncing off. • Dirt/Ice - Yellowish/orange or light bluish in color. You can destroy those from the side of from the top in a way that is similar to a sandstone. Regardless, you will do a short bounce off from them if you strike them from above. • Rock - Light grayish, operating similar to dirt blocks. They’re a little tougher though, requiring 2 hits or a charged swing to destroy. • Bubble – I seen in primarily at the Iron What. You can destroy them by attacking, but you can dissolve them quick just by standing on top of them. When shovel dropping them, there’s no bounce. You simply land. • Chain-explosion - Dark grayish with red. Striking any of them will cause a linear destruction up to the end.

Also, any enemy that attacks or dies with an explosion will destroy blocks similar to shovel swing attacks.

Relics

Relics are the sub-weapons of your Shovel Night. Only one of the sub-weapons can be equipped at a time. Other than the chalices, usage of relics will cost you MP. 4 of those relics can be bought at the village, which the other 8 can be sought and purchased from Chester. They’ll be found in a blue chest, at the stage of the Order of No Quarter Night.

If you couldn’t find Chester at that stage, of have enough money to purchase relics from him at that sage, then you can simply buy it from him at his village shop after the stage is over. Regardless, the price will go up. You can play the stage again in case you want the relic, without paying excessively for it.

Flare Wand

Location: Pridemoor Keep (King Knight) Cost: $1000 on field/$2000 at Village MP: 4 Details: Shoot Flames Comments: This is a blast attack (slow) that require little MP for use. 1HP damage is done per hit, where you can have 2 of those at a time on screen. Highly useful for long range attacks, especially around dangerous enemies.

Phase Locket

Location: Lich Yard Cost: $1000 on field/$2000at Village MP: 8 Details: Escape from all harm… briefly. Comments: Allows you invincibility for close to 4 seconds. You will be frozen in place for about the first second. This freeze effect applies mid-air too. Thus, this attack ruins the momentum of your jump if used in air. Best used in tight areas. Can be abused in locations where you are having a tough time.

Dust Knuckles

Can go through shield. Does 1 damage per hit.

Throwing Anchor

Location: Iron Whale (Treasure Knight) Cost: $3000 on field/$3500 at Village MP: 6 Details: An unstoppable arc of destruction. Comments: Moves upwards in an arc motion through shields and walls, while doing a single point of damage per hit. You can actually hit an enemy 2 times at the arc’s peak. Perfect for below and above enemies.

Mobile Gear

Location: Clockwork Tower Cost: $3000 on field/$3500 at Village MP: 6 Details: Surpass the hazards and reach higher places! Comments: Produce a moving platform of 1 block, rolling ahead when you step on it. This platform kills all enemies with HP of 2 or lower. If the platform strikes an enemy when tossed before landing, it will do a single point of damage before disappearing. This platform will jump over gaps, and move over spikes. When hitting a wall, this platform embeds for some seconds before vanishing. You can use this block to get to higher ledges.

War Horn

Location: Stranded Ship (Polar Knight) Cost: $4000 on field/$5000 at Village MP: 20 Details: Clear space around you with a powerful blow! Comments: Blows up everything in the surrounds within a large radius. This can be triggered in the middle of the air. There is a moment where the attack charges before blowing up. This attack can destroy high hp monsters in a single attack, yet it will do only a single point of damage on bosses and mini-bosses.

Propeller Dagger

Location: Flying Machine (Propeller Knight) Cost: $4000 on field/$5000 at Village MP: 4 Details: Soar through the sky blade first! Comments: Fires forward while doing a single HP of damage upon hitting. This can destroy blocks on impact. Enemies can stop this attack short upon impact, even if it kills them. You can activate this attack many times in succession, but the launch height is reduced with each hit.

Fishing Rod

Location: In Village (from Chester) Cost: $1250 MP: 6 Details: Cast into a pit, and wait for a bite!! Comments: Has a multitude of uses. After getting a fishing pole, there will be special sparkling pits that you’ll come across. You can stand on the edge and drop the fishing line there. After a while, (!!) should popup on your knight’s head, where you need to hit the jump button for a reel in. Those pits may provide you multiple rewards, including gold fish that can provide 350 gold, Song scrolls in certain locations, and an acolyte fish which can fill up a Troupple Chalice you have. Fishing in non-sparkle pits will provide you blue fish of varying sizes that could refill you HP. Sometimes, you may get junk, which is unfortunate.

You can also fish in lava pits, but the fish you pick up maybe fire fish which may go damage to you.

This relic can also take hold of sometimes that are falling, pulling them back towards you! Those include gold bags that you lose upon death, especially if they’re at an out of reach ledge!

You can also use this relic to kill enemies. It does 2 points per hit, which isn’t shabby.
