WIRRAL RAMBLERS SUNDAY 4th SEPTEMBER 2005 CASTLETON (CASTLETON) A WALK We start today's walk at Hope. We climb Lose Hill and then follow the ridge to Mam Tor. We then drop down to Edale. From here we climb Grindslow Knoll and from the summit we follow a ridge passing Nether Tor and Nether Moor below. We then drop back down into the Vale of Edale at Clough Farm. From here we return to Castleton via Lose Hill. DISTANCE: 27.4km (17 miles) 23½ POINTS ASCENT 1000m (3270ft) B PLUS WALK Starting at Yorkshire Bridge on the A6013 (GR203848) we ascend Win Hill. We then follow the Roman Road as far as Crookstone Barn and head southwest to reach Barber Booth via Edale. We ascend Chapel Gate to Rushup Edge and continue along the Edge to reach Mam Tor and Hollins Cross where we then descend into Castleton. DISTANCE: 21km (13 miles) 17½ POINTS ASCENT 670m (2200ft) B MINUS WALK Going south from Castleton we head up Cavedale to join the Limestone Way which we follow southwest then west and north on good paths to Oxlow House and Windy Knoll to reach the foot of Mam Tor. We ascend Mam Tor and follow the Great Ridge as far as Lose Hill dropping south, down to Spring House Farm. Then it’s east and south into Hope. Crossing the A6187 we head up a lane then head west following Peakshole Water into Castleton. This walk has a few steep, rocky bits but on good paths and great views (Fingers crossed). DISTANCE: 16km (10 miles) 14 POINTS ASCENT 490m (1600ft) C WALK A classic walk along the Mam Tor Ridge. Although a 1000ft of ascent we shall take the easiest route. Starting from the car park we walk the now “No Through Road” near to the foot of Mam Tor. A field path and steps will take us to the summit. The ridge walk will be completed to the right of Back Tor and then we descend to Hope and a pub stop. A field path will return us to Castleton and the Fat Controller. DISTANCE: 12.9km (8 miles) 10 POINTS ASCENT 305m (1000ft) D WALK Starting at Castleton C/P we take a footpath northwest towards Hollins Cross but turn east for Only Grange Farm. Here we turn down to the training centre and continue on for lunch. After lunch we head southeast across railway lines to reach Hope Village and a footpath back to Castleton and the coach. DISTANCE: 10.5km (6½ miles) 7 POINTS ASCENT 90m (300ft) Please keep behind your leader at all times WALKS SHOULD NOT COACH STOP RETURN TO THE COACH GLOSSOP COACH WILL DEPART AT 6.00pm BEFORE 4.30pm 15 MINUTES ONLY NO SMOKING ON THE COACH, THANK YOU.
