Expression of parasite traits related to transmission, such as the manipulation of host phenotype, may peak in seasons when transmission is optimal. The acanthocephalan Acanthocephalus lucii is primarily transmitted to its fish definitive host in spring. We assessed whether the parasitic alteration of 2 traits (hiding behaviour and coloration) in the isopod intermediate host was more pronounced at this time of year. Refuge use by infected isopods was lower, relative to uninfected isopods, in spring than in summer or fall. Infected isopods had darker abdomens than uninfected isopods, but this difference did not vary between seasons. The level of host alteration was unaffected by exposing isopods to different light and temperature regimes. In a group of infected isopods kept at 4 xC, refuge use decreased from November to May, indicating that reduced hiding in spring develops during winter.

There is, however, presently no study conducted on the endoparasites infestation in these fishes. Therefore, the objectives of the present study were to identify endoparasitic worms and examine the intensity level in skipjack tuna K. pelamis from Sibolga waters. Sampling was conducted in Debora Private Fishing Port, Sibolga from 4th to 18th June 2019 and a total of 20 fish samples with weight ranged between 740 g and 1.200 g and length from 37.2 cm to 41.4 cm were analyzed in the study. The identification of the worm was conducted in the laboratory using a stereo microscope. The results showed seven species or genera of worms were found in the intestine and stomach of the fish with varying level of intensity and incidence. For example, Echinorhynchus sp. was found with 100% intestinal and 10% stomach incidences at a total intensity of 8.5; Acanthocephalus sp. with 25% intestinal incidence and 1.6 intensity, Rhadinorhynchus sp. with 25% intestinal and 5% stomach incidences, and 1.5 intensity; Leptorhynchoides sp.

Lyholt: A checklist of metazoan parasites from rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. Acta vet. scand. 1995, 36, 299-318. - An extensive litera ture survey on metazoan parasites from rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss has been conducted. The taxa Monogenea, Cestoda, Digenea, Nematoda, Acanthocephala, Crustacea and Hirudinea are covered. A total of 169 taxonomic entities are recorded in rainbow trout worldwide although few of these may prove synonyms in future anal yses of the parasite specimens. These records include Monogenea (15), Cestoda (27), Digenea (37), Nematoda (39), Acanthocephala (23), Crustacea (17), Mollusca (6) and Hirudinea ( 5). Echinorhynchus gadi infections were observed in Dover sole, Microstomus pacificus and Rex sole, Glyptocephalus zachirus and constituted new ho st records for the paras ite. The adult worm was redescribed since the acanthocephalan from the two pleuronectid flatfishes is identical to ~. gadi as descr ibed in the literature, except for the regular occur- rence of 17 rows of longitudinal hooks on the probosc is. Echinorhynchus sp., found only in the Pac ific staghorn sculpin, Leptocottus armatus, is an undescribed species and resembles only ~. laurentianus which parasitizes pleuronectid flatfishes on the east coast of North America. The adult worm was described. Echinorhynchus sp. was observed in b. armatus from all sampling sites and in Yaquina Bay fish throughout the year. The prevalence and intens ity of infection in Yaquina Bay fish greater than 100 m.m. total length were sim.ilar in all size classes and substantially higher than in young fish. A non - seasonal paras itic cycle was operating and restr icted in Yaquina Bay and Echinorhynchus sp. was being acquired and lost from. L. arm.atus throughout the year.

Eggs are dispersed into the habitat from definitive hosts and in some species eggs possess fibrils, which have been proposed to facilitate transmission to intermediate hosts. We examined the potential role of fibrils in transmission of the acanthocephalan Acanthocephalus dirus to its intermediate host Caecidotea intermedius, a stream-dwelling isopod. We identify three properties of fibrils that could favor transmission. First, there was a slow rate of fibril release, which was dependent on the actions of stream microorganisms. Second, eggs with fibrils were more likely to adhere to the substrate than those without fibrils. Third, in feeding trials, isopods exposed to eggs with fibrils had a higher infection prevalence than isopods exposed to eggs without fibrils. These properties could favor transmission by increasing the likelihood that eggs sink to the sediment occupied by their target hosts before adhering to items on the substrate (e.g., leaves) and by increasing recruitment after the eggs have been consumed.
