The Catholic Bishops and the Rise of Evangelical Catholics
religions Article The Catholic Bishops and the Rise of Evangelical Catholics Patricia Miller Received: 27 October 2015; Accepted: 22 December 2015; Published: 6 January 2016 Academic Editor: Timothy A. Byrnes Senior Correspondent, Religion Dispatches; [email protected]; Tel.: +1-703-519-8379 Abstract: White Catholics are increasingly trending toward the Republican Party, both as voters and candidates. Many of these Republican-leaning Catholics are displaying a more outspoken, culture-war oriented form of Catholicism that has been dubbed Evangelical Catholicism. Through their forceful disciplining of pro-choice Catholics and treatment of abortion in their quadrennial voting guides, as well as their emphasis on “religious liberty”, the U.S. bishops have played a major role in the rise of these Evangelical Catholics. Keywords: U.S. Catholic bishops; abortion; Republican; Democratic; voting 1. Introduction While the Catholic Church is associated with opposition to legalized abortion, a review of the historical record shows that the anti-abortion movement was largely fomented by the Catholic hierarchy and fueled by grassroots Evangelical opposition to abortion [1]. Lay Catholics have largely tracked general public opinion on abortion, with just over half of white Catholics saying it should be legal; polls have consistently found that only about 13% of Catholics support the position of the Catholic Church that abortion should be illegal in all circumstances [2,3]. As a result, Catholic voters have been comfortable supporting candidates who favor abortion rights, adding to their reputation as swing voters who have backed both successful Republican and Democratic presidential candidates. However, a substantial subset of white Catholic voters now appears more firmly committed to the Republican Party. -

STANDING with PLANNED PARENTHOOD John
NEW MEDIA AND POLITICAL THREATS: STANDING WITH PLANNED PARENTHOOD John Remensperger A thesis submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Chapel Hill 2013 Approved By: Daren C. Brabham Daniel Kreiss Frederic Stutzman © 2013 John Remensperger ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii Abstract JOHN REMENSPERGER: New Media and Political Threats: Standing with Planned Parenthood (Under the direction of Dr. Daren C. Brabham) Much of the scholarship on the media strategies of social movement organizations (SMOs) has focused on how these organizations frame issues. More recently, scholars have written about the strategies of digitally native, online advocacy organizations like MoveOn.org. There is a lack of research, however, on how long-standing organizations adapt to new media environments in response to political threats. Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s implementation of tactics like the “Planned Parenthood Truth Tour” and other strategies suggest that older SMOs are attempting, via new media, to take advantage of enthusiasm and interest from publics as they arise. This thesis reveals ways in which existing SMOs prep for and subsequently leverage moments of political contention. It also shows how a long-standing organization that advocates for abortion rights utilizes new media in its political strategy, thus extending previous literature on abortion politics and providing normative guidelines for practitioners involved in similar contentious moments. iii Acknowledgments I would like to thank Dr. Daren Brabham, my committee chair, for his guidance, insights, and flexibility. I would like to thank Dr. -

Vatican II repeated this plea and added emphasis on the role of the laity. In its document on Social Communications, the Council said that it is a responsibility of the laity to start Catholic radio stations, and that it would be "shameful" if these efforts were not supported by the faithful. The station is supported through listener tax- deductible donations. Without broad listener support, and the commitment and generosity of EWTN, Catholic radio would not be viable on local AM or FM in the community. Parish Pledge Talks One of the most successful methods used in building audience awareness and paying for the operation of local Catholic radio stations is parish pledge talks. A short six-minute scripted talk is given at a weekend slate of Masses. -

The Armor of Faith Topic Summary: Saints of Inspiration Part IV: Saint of Mothers Saint Gerard Majella Public Domain Introduction [Greeting:] → Welcome to “The Armor of Faith,” a show where we hope to bring our listeners closer to the Word of God and the blessings we receive through living in the fullness of the Catholic faith. My name is Doug and I will be your host as we discuss the blessings of the Church Christ built upon Peter. I am joined today by my panel: [names] Helen is a lay-Dominican with a love for music ministry. The Dominicans, I always mention, are also known as the Order of Preachers. Sharon, in addition to being my lovely wife as well as a wonderful blessing, is a youth and adult formation catechist. We are also blessed to have on our panel, Donna Mae, who is the artist who sculpted the statue of Our Lady of America which was carried by our youth and blessed by Saint John Paul II at the 1993 Word Youth Day. Of course, as everyone knows by now, I am simply here to ask questions because that is one way of learning from the people who have answers? The hard part we leave to our panelists, which is to answer my questions, correct my pronunciation, and make sure I know which century I am talking about, so welcome to our panelists as well as to our listeners. Let us open with a prayer: In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Heavenly Father, we lift up our hearts in thanks and praise for this opportunity to open and share your Holy Word this day. -
The Silent Scream (1984), by Bernard Nathanson, Crusade for Life, and American Portrait Films [1]
Published on The Embryo Project Encyclopedia (https://embryo.asu.edu) The Silent Scream (1984), by Bernard Nathanson, Crusade for Life, and American Portrait Films [1] By: Zhang, Mark Keywords: Abortion [2] ultrasound [3] Bernard Nathanson [4] The Silent Scream is an anti-abortion [5] film released in 1984 by American Portrait Films, then based in Brunswick, Ohio. The film was created and narrated by Bernard Nathanson, an obstetrician and gynecologist from New York, and it was produced by Crusade for Life, an evangelical anti-abortion [5] organization [6]. In the video, Nathanson narrates ultrasound [7] footage of an abortion [5] of a twelve-week-old fetus [8], claiming that the fetus [8] opened its mouth in what Nathanson calls a silent scream during the procedure. As a result of Nathanson's anti-abortion [5] stance in the film, The Silent Scream contributed to the abortion [5] debate in the 1980s. From 1970 to 1972 Nathanson had directed in New York City, New York the Center for Reproductive and Sexual Health, which he called the largest abortion [5] facility in the western world at that time, and he claimed to help found the National Abortion Rights Action League in New York City. Though he had previously performed abortions, by 1982 Nathanson opposed the procedure, owing his changed stance to the technology of ultrasound [7], which allowed observation of fetuses during abortions. He created the film as a statement against abortion [5], stating that any form of violence should be opposed, including those against a fetus [8]. The Silent Scream begins in Nathanson's office, where he first informs the viewer that he is an obstetrician and a gynecologist and that he had previously performed thousands of abortions. -
