I will be forever grateful that she started us on the practice of praying the daily Family Rosary at home over 40 years ago. I truly believe that this daily Rosary was the catalyst that began my journey to better internalize the Truth and Beauty of our Holy Catholic Faith!     THE ONE VISIBLE DIVINELY INSTITUTED CATHOLIC CHURCH AND THE CHALLENGES OF UNITY Robert P. Marko, Ph.D., 2015-16 Fulbright Scholar, Ukrainian Catholic Unversity Abstract Unlike the Protestant reformers of the sixteenth century, such as John Calvin, who saw the Church of Rome as a mere “vestige” or ruin of the Church of Christ, Catholicism has maintained that the concrete historical visible reality of the Church of Christ is found in the Catholic Church. In the words of Robert Bellarmine: "the Church is only one, and not two; and that one and true [Church] is the assembly of men (women) gathered in the profession of the same Christian faith, and in the communion of the same sacraments, under the reign of legitimate pastors, and especially of the one vicar of Christ on earth, the Roman Pontiff." In the visible Catholic Church, there is fullness of doctrine, true sacraments and legitimate authority. The official decrees of Vatican II, specifically Lumen Gentium and Unitatis Redintegratio continue the Bellarmine definition of Church that was popularized in Catholic catechesis for centuries. However, the decrees reflect a significant change in tone and recognize elements of the Church of Christ outside of full incorporation in Catholicism. This understanding of Church as a visible, historical reality "subsisting" in the Catholic Church is not without challenges to full communion of Christians. Key words: This short article deals with the classic definition of the Church, found in the Catholic or Counter Reformation theologian and cardinal, Robert Bellarmine in his Disputations on the Controversies of the Christian Faith, Vol II and how that definition of the visible, institutional nature of the community of believers is the official position of Catholicism.

Many of these Republican-leaning Catholics are displaying a more outspoken, culture-war oriented form of Catholicism that has been dubbed Evangelical Catholicism. Through their forceful disciplining of pro-choice Catholics and treatment of abortion in their quadrennial voting guides, as well as their emphasis on “religious liberty”, the U.S. bishops have played a major role in the rise of these Evangelical Catholics. Introduction While the Catholic Church is associated with opposition to legalized abortion, a review of the historical record shows that the anti-abortion movement was largely fomented by the Catholic hierarchy and fueled by grassroots Evangelical opposition to abortion [1]. Lay Catholics have largely tracked general public opinion on abortion, with just over half of white Catholics saying it should be legal; polls have consistently found that only about 13% of Catholics support the position of the Catholic Church that abortion should be illegal in all circumstances [2,3]. As a result, Catholic voters have been comfortable supporting candidates who favor abortion rights, adding to their reputation as swing voters who have backed both successful Republican and Democratic presidential candidates. However, a substantial subset of white Catholic voters now appears more firmly committed to the Republican Party.

John Kachuba provides a brief history of the development of catechetical structures and resources for East- ern Catholics in North America. Beginning with the early 1970’s, Eastern Catholics of both the Byzantine and Syriac traditions began working together towards an “Eastern Chris- tian Formation and Development Program.” As the years progressed, specific elementary school-level programs were developed, corresponding to the respective traditions of the Churches from the East. In an effort to coordinate resources more effectively, eparchial directors formed the Eastern Catholic Conference of Diocesan Directors (ECDD), which later became a committee of the Eastern Catholic Associates, at the level of the United States National Conference of Catholic Bishops. The ECDD continues to produce materials, which serve not only to educate Eastern Catholics in their own faith and traditions, but also teach Roman Catholics about the existence and gifts of the Eastern Churches. I would like to present to you a brief history of catechesis in the Eastern Catholic Churches in the United States and some of our accomplishments and our goals. As you know, catechesis continues the teaching mission of Jesus Christ. In the Gospels, Jesus is seen many times teach- ing the crowds, his followers and his apostles. White, Ph.D. At the 1884 Third Plenary Council of Baltimore, the US Catholic bishops commissioned a national prayer book titled the Manual of Prayers for the Use of the Catholic Laity and the widely-known Baltimore Catechism. This study examines the Manual’s genesis, contents, and publication history to understand its contribution to the Church’s teaching efforts. To account for the Manual’s contents, the study describes prayer book genres developed in the British Isles that shaped similar publications for use by American Catholics. The study considers the critiques of bishops and others concerning US-published prayer books, and episcopal decrees to address their weak theological content. To improve understanding of the Church’s liturgy, the bishops commissioned a prayer book for the laity containing selections from Roman liturgical books. The study quantifies the text’s sources from liturgical and devotional books. The book’s compiler, Rev. Clarence Woodman, C.S.P., adopted the English manual prayer book genre while most of the book’s content derived from the Roman Missal, Breviary, and Ritual, albeit augmented with highly regarded English and US prayers and instructions.

This helps to explain why there is a disconnect between the Archdiocese proclaiming YYA ministry as a top priority since 1995 and youth ministers self-reporting that they feel like second-class citizens. Moreover, this disconnect is occurring in an increasingly social context in which the current generations of young Catholics are participating less in their faith than previous generations. Interviews with 44 youth ministers and 12 pastors reveal details of this disconnect between archdiocesan policy which states YYA ministry is a top priority and the practices of the archdiocese which indicate otherwise. Youth ministers are marginalized workers who feel insecure about their employment, causing many to obtain second jobs or routinely search for better employment. The sociology of organization literature, particularly the concepts of decoupling and social status are discussed to help explain this disconnect. Data are interpreted and the conclusions made that ecclesial officials take youth ministry for granted and that a weak institutional infrastructure of youth ministry continues in the AOD.
